Ike was my guitar teacher for awhile and I used to love hearing all his stories from being on the road with Frank...this riff was also one of the first things he ever taught me.
Seriously, this song especially makes him one of my favorite singers ever. So soulful, and just able to float on over the 11 beat phrase of this song. It's so bad ass!
"But this was only a bunch of imaginary notes I played, just a little extra something to keep me going from day to day." - Probably one of the best line every written in any blues/rock song
Every time I hear a different recording of this song my entire mind is blown over & over again. I don't know why I've connected so much to this song but it's honestly just one of the most relatable things I've ever heard sonically & lyrically. The changes to the words & lines he emphasizes every time, it feels like he's telling us exactly what parts of the song he was feeling during those moments. The May 8th Mudd Club 1980 version has got to be my favorite so far, he clearly wants to get the fuck out of that sweaty venue, yet still performs such a masterpiece of a song. Maybe I'm crazy & I know there's hundreds of Frank songs I could be this attached to instead, but this is like my own personal Zappa-written theme song.
I was in Highschool when this came out and everytime I here this album I get real emotional because it I was so young and wanting things so different and Frank never let me down. He was thee best!!
Watched Ike perform this on Saturday and he's just as good as he was back when this was recorded. Had the pleasure of going backstage and talking to him for an hour, What a great man.
Frank had such serious balls when he played the guitar. Most other guitarists were just dabbling- Zappa made them sound like they were in nursery school and he had a PhD.
If you don't appreciate, now I didn't say like or become a fan of, but appreciate Zappa, you know absolutely nothing about music. He and his band was light years ahead of other rock bands of the day, but not only that, his compositions were often more challenging than what most formally trained musicians played--classical, jazz, and the like. Dig that, kiddies.
Chances are, dude not gon see that comment since he left it seven years ago, laddie! It is a great comment however. Frank wrote such complicated music, he had to find players good enough to PLAY what he wrote, because otherwise he had no idea how it sounded. Not tryna piggyback ole boy up there, but Frank was truly ahead of his time, and will truly štand the test of time.
I aint no kiddie...i saw el franko in nyc with mothers.taight him how to write lyrics..so u would make mire money as a butcher so doncha waste your time on me. I am the scrutinizer yessir
As you can see....ignorance is bliss!!!! Because this is a gift from one of the most talented musicians this planet WILL EVER BE BLESSED WITH! TRUE STORY!
I've got it I'll be sullen and withdrawn I'll dwindle off into the twilight realm Of my own secret thoughts I'll lay on my back here 'til dawn In a semi-catatonic state And dream of guitar notes That would irritate An executive kinda guy...
retutetutetutetutenunenunee!!! I met Frank in San Jose. He did a guest dj thing at KSJO around this period. He was very nice to me. A great man. I miss his brilliance.
My God Frank. There’s nothing like seeing a genius and master of his instrument playing that instrument. The guy in the Fur Coat plays guitar. And sometimes there is trouble! Indeed there is! God I love ya. You too Ike and Ray.
this is one of my favorites. when I first bought broadway the hard way, I listened to this one over and over and over again and often fell asleep with it. it's GENIOUS.
I love Frank Zappa, I remember being a music junkie and musician at the age of around twenty seeing Apostrophe at the record store not really knowing who and what Frank Zappa was about then buying it not really sure how I felt but kept listening until it clicked. I finally found musical freedom and just kept buying more and more Zappa albums.
Dammit FZ. Lotta damn gall to up and leave us all rudderless on this plooking planet. Thanx for so much hope. Dweezil, u2r badass. Grateful for u and Zappa family's persistence and awesome achievements in preserving legacy of Frank. When you were able to get us thru 'Waternelon in Easter Hay' with you on tour, tore out hearts, stomped those suckers flat, and renewed.❤ Favorite Frank spoken quotable: "Disco music makes it possible for there to be disco entertainment centers, so that boring, mellow, laid-back kinds of people can meet each other and reproduce." (Or close to that, anyway). This from the composer of the best song with its 'very own disco clothes,' "Dancin' Fool"!!
Heard Ike Willis last night playing w/ Ugly Radio Rebellion at the Purple Fiddle in Thomas WV. They played a great shoooo. Nice guy, great fun was had by all. (They played Outside Now).
this is a very good example of Frank's improvisation skills...the entire solo is really good, but 4:10 thru 4:26 is ultra-good...not only because of its difficulty, but because of how it SOUNDS.
I love all of the tributes over the years to FZ and his many bands. Nothing like him though. 1 of a kind for ever. At least until I assume room temperature.
Happy Birthday Frank... I'm a day late but I've been carrying your spirit with me. What little bit I can anyway. I can't wait to see what it's like on the outside now... :-) Thank You ~very much~ YourArf for posting.
I met Ike Willis at toad's place New Haven, CT. 15 minutes before he was to go on stage, I took a photo with him. He was two fisted with Jack Daniels and then went onstage , where a Heineken was waiting for him. He started playing, "Outside Now" and the place went crazy.... Great show!
Most of my CD collection is Frank Zappa. I could only find "Joe's Garage" at a used Cd and other used media. Not one of my Zappa CDs have a scratch, including the used CD.
I think very Few guitarists have this wide and amazing understanding for the guitar I mean that understanding for the guitar that Frank had feeling for Tone and sound he was a very tasteful player i love his versions of Black Napkins and every Inca Roads Solo Frank played The only guitarist i know that have this deep understanding for the Instrument are Paul Gilbert & Richie Kotzen & Andy Timmons
My 1st, FZ ,concert in the fall of 80 ,had this lineup, cept I saw Vinnie cane back ,to replace Dave L..Not sure, Ray & Ike were killing , saw em the next year ,Vai Chad wackerman, just had ,Ray white..Right after the MTV simulcast Halloween show..It truly was something to hear...Luv F Z..oh yeaahhh!!!
Ike was my guitar teacher for awhile and I used to love hearing all his stories from being on the road with Frank...this riff was also one of the first things he ever taught me.
what! you're lucky to have had such a great teacher.
Awesome 🤩
Did he teach you to play the guitar and bend the string like reet toot reet to reet to
❤️🙏..bro
Wow, you were lucky! I saw Ike live with The Pajama People a decade ago, he was absolutely awesome
I love Ike's voice
ike was the sheet

Ike is such a legend
Ike's 🤩
Perfect voice for Zappa. Just lovely gravitas. So real
"But this was only a bunch of imaginary notes I played, just a little extra something to keep me going from day to day." - Probably one of the best line every written in any blues/rock song
Been there twerk twerk zing fifalee fo
And that's ok, I'll be getting outta here pretty soon, I can't wait to see what it's like on the outside now...
I was there, fabulous concert i will remember for ever, RIP Frank.
'nice
Wow I was just discovering his music then! I’ll bet it was a blast!! Rock on!

so much sadness in Ike´s voice, so much sadness in frank´s guitar. Gotta cry all times i hear it
don't forget Ray's voice, it's incredible
And do not forget to go to the shrink
And if this brings the tears, DO NOT listen to watermelon in easter hay- just kidding, go listen and let it out... first note in should do the trick
@@Jon-wm3wp Que hacé Shonatan? Como está la Yirley? Sos grasa hasta en el nombre...LOL
the emotion with which Ike sings this one I've always found striking
I was in Highschool when this came out and everytime I here this album I get real emotional because it I was so young and wanting things so different and Frank never let me down. He was thee best!!
Music* is the best!
The whole album is a masterpiece
Best Rock opera hands down for me
@GoncaloBotelhodeSousa
A Rock Opera that Only Frank Zappa Fans bought in 1979. Worlds better then Sheik Yerbouti.
Damn I forgot how good Ike's voice really is. And of Frank just pours his soul out on guitar.
Anything with Ike and Ray is always pure magic.... the two greatest male vocalists of all time.
He really DID!
Exactly
Frank, where are you when we need you? Gone to soon.

i CAN HONESTLY SAY THIS MAY BE THE BEST SONG EVER!..
I love this post
+Lucchi Supremeson You're not lying man, LOVE zappa.
+Lucchi Supremeson It may be my favorite Zappa, and that's saying a lot.
Outside now
Yes
I had the great pleasure to meet Ike Willis a few years ago after a show in a small northern English town. What a guy.
that man can sing!
Reent toont teen toont tee toot nee noo neenoonee....
ringleader I still pluck my guitar that way, especially at guitar center...
As you can see....ignorance is bliss!!!! Because this is a gift from one of the most talented musicians this planet WILL EVER BE BLESSED WITH! TRUE STORY!
😊
Frank's guitar hardly ever sounded better. God bless you Frank 😢
I've got it
I'll be sullen and withdrawn
I'll dwindle off into the twilight realm
Of my own secret thoughts
I'll lay on my back here 'til dawn
In a semi-catatonic state

Straight up poetry
beautiful... love Ike

beautiful, my favorite Zappa tune, dark and beautiful.
No one else could make your jaw drop from the amazing musicianship AND make you laugh too... what an amazing band, led by an amazing guy!
this is one of my favorites. when I first bought broadway the hard way, I listened to this one over and over and over again and often fell asleep with it. it's GENIOUS.
You think you know this song ... then FZ steps in ... and hits you with some unexpected notes full bore .... pure gold!!!!
As You Can See, - Music Can Get You Pretty Fucked Up...

An EXCELLENT live rendition
Ike is such a legend
Great Amen
Saw Zappa at the Paramount in Seattle about a year after this show. What an experience.
Ike, i love your outstanding voice.
God bless you for existing Frank.
Super zappa band 😍😍😍 Best version ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A fitting song for these (shelter in place) times!
Zappa had an untrumpeted knack for causing the waterworks in certain tunes. None more than this, black Napkins, and watermelon in Easter hay
I Sat in audiences all over the place crying my eyes out .when I told him that he said you're too sensitive for the 20th century.
Explain I don't get the vomit
i have spent Manny hours listening to the loading zone announcements
I've watched this show countless times. I start Friday nights at least twice a month, with Chunga's Revenge. Plookers.
Where can I find the entire concert?
+Dries van Elten I think it's on youtube
David Logeman - Criminally underrated Zappa drummer ...
The 1980 band are something of a hidden gem really.
...great, saw them a few weeks before in Brussels. Sadly my only FZ live show, but glad to have witnessed this unique genius....FZ music is the best !
The PMRC is long forgotten , in 100 years people will discuss the genius of FZ
300 years
Like Charlie Christian and Jimi Hendrix, EVH and Frank Zappa
Make that 500 years
excellent performance of an excellent song, ike is on fire
I can't wait to see what's it's like on the outside now.
This was the best music got

Fantastic performance.
I was the first time I heard it, just before I listen it twice in a row again.
Such beauty.
this is the best song on the album . ike and ray rock.

So incredable, Frank was one of a kind
Beautiful. I'm actualy a littel teary eyed...

I wish i was in the crowd fucking amazing
Aparte de lo complejo musical, es de resaltar el tremendo sentido del humor zappiano...
Ike's still doing it!
@creamer298 - Yah I love Ike too. His voice is so great, so rich and expressive. Love it.
Arthur Barrow is so underrated. He is Frank's music director I believe. Excellent work with Robbie Krieger also.
this just made my day
I got kicked off stage at the Home Bar in Dallas, Tx for singing a cover of this song in 2007.
Frank is proud ,,,tell the story what happen in detail?
the time signature is 11/8
Beautiful.
Saw this lineup April 1980 in Wichita. Craig Stewart joined them for Crew Slut and some other stuff!!
🌠Sooo Good ..Heavenly....
Thought I’d seen it all. Geez
Love how rue ritotito bits melody mirrors the first guitar line in Joe's garage!
