No risk of damaging the motor with high RPM downshifts. Keeping these motors in the powerband is absolutely critical for holding a pace. You don't want to be in 6th gear when its time to accelerate out of a corner, let alone in neutral!
I drive a Civic Si myself (07 sedan) and ever since I saw this video I've been driving without the music just to enjoy the sound of the engine. I still don't have the heel toe downshift down, but k20 engines are a joy to drive!
now for the longest time, i've hated the sound of hondas, and really all 4-bangers that weren't boxers seems like the K20 and newer have really changed my mind on it... so long as they aren't straight-piped lol
The K-series was the last of its kind, and the pinnacle of NA 4-cylinders. Everything is going turbo now, even the Hondas. I'm stoked I was able to spend so much time with such a fantastic engine.
the magic is in the intake sound , 4 bangers that rev over 8000 sound sick on the intake, exausth should be something stock like maybe a little more clear but far from a staright pipe lol
I Read the description to this video, it was amazing, I've always tried explaining that to people but never had the right words. You explained it perfectly, Bravo.
In a fwd that down shift is called rev matching(keeps your rpms higher for smoother down shifts dosent slow you down a lot either like normal down shifting with out reving)Heel toe is a little different method used for like a rwd car.
I drive a 2002 BMW M3 and your description pretty much nailed it. Having driven both N/A and turbo cars there is something about a high revving engine.
Im usually not a Honda guy, but man i really do like the sound of these engines. Maybe its because i understand how it works with the extra cam lobe and such, or maybe the air flow of the engine was just engineered so well that it makes this pure of a sound. Good stuff!!!
Haha, yeah i used to see a lot of that. Then i moved to Houston, and for the most part everyone there knows what's up. Seen tons of LS swaps into imports. I built a Frankenstein LS3 for my car.. Glad to be a part of your team lol
Almost, the Black and Silvertop sound more deep and pronounced, with an aggressive, brute sound, almost muscly as far as 4cyls go. This sounds more like the Toyota 2ZZ.
Except Vtec came first so it would have to be vice versa and it sounds better than a 20v 4age by a mile in person and or on decent speakers. I have heard many 20v 4age's even in full race form, no comparison, Vtec sounds crazier by some margin
As you might guess, its the same story with new VTEC owners that see a lot of threatening V8's the first time they go on youtube. Every driver that has had some actual nights out has seen impressive stuff from all venues. Just the other night we were drooling over a guy's 6.0 (LS2 I think) that he had swapped into a 240. Not a typical choice at all, but a truly amazing result. No matter what you drive, if you drive it hard you're on my team.
An Mx-6 with the KLZE is sweet sounding as well. the K20 and KLZE have the best systems ever for these kind of motors, the only diff. is ones a 4cyl, the other a 6. love them both.
No question. I've never been a fan of straight-line racing of any kind (street or drag), but if I was, I'd choose a muscle car or a turbo car without a doubt. IMO Hondas are not a good choice for drag racing. They were never built with that in mind. And before the honda street racers get mad at me, its obvious that you CAN make them really good at drag, but there are simply better platforms to start with IMO.
I love the sound of this! I also like how you explained in the description yet people still make rude/un necessary comments which is a tad sad. I use vimeo, people are much nicer then youtube
"Somehow I never seem to have a problem with "low-end torque" when exiting corners at 8000 rpm instead" That's precisely why all racing engines easily exceed 9000rpm. If Low-end Torque won races, then F1 cars would be at 1000rpm, not 10000rpm.
Thanks man! This is actually an FG2. The ep3's we have here in the US aren't that great (only like 7k redline). I wish we had type-R's over here. This vid was shot with my old Vado HD which was clipped to the front licence plate. Works really well. I run my GoPro that way too. Check out my other driving vids!
I find that if you put the camera up against something flat (like the front plate) then the air can't move past it directly, and it doesn't pick up wind noise. This has worked with my GoPro as well. Just make sure you get it snug up against something solid like the plate or the bumper.
No problem. Motors themselves are often referred to as VTEC motors. Its a mechanism thats built into the cams. VTEC cams have extra lobes that are bigger, but which only get tagged in at high RPM. This makes the engine act more like a big-cammed racing engine when you're hammering it, but has none of the downsides of having big cams full-time (boggy low-end, rough idle, etc). Each cam mode has its own power curve. In theory, you simply set the change-over point where the two curves intersect.
The 9thgen is going to be a great car if support emerges for higher revs. We already know that all the K-series stuff can spin past 8k, so people just need to figure out what to do to the head to make that happen (assuming there is not too much stroke already). If I had one I'd be doing research this very moment to find out if you could run anything close to a K20A head on the stock shortblock.
Thanks man. People fail to realize that liter-for-liter, an engine that operates at lower RPM is not a "strategy" and its not "muscle." Its just worse.
Good question. The K motors continuously adjust the timing advance on the intake cam throughout the RPM range (including low RPM), but the cams have big lobes that kick on all at once at higher RPM just like the old B-series classic VTEC. You can definitely hear it. It kicks on at 0:01, but I kept it above 6000 RPM for the rest of the vid which is why you don't hear it changing back and forth.
Hey man, love the sound, awesome bit of road too. I'm not even a Honda boy, but I'm putting an SR20VE in my car at the end of the year and if it sounds as good as this, I will be very happy indeed :)
The neo vvl when he kicks, he kicks hard and loud i love it i got the sr20ve on my nissan primera and now im just chilling with GA14DE on my nissan n15
How did you get such a nice sound? Like with the camera. What kinda camera are you using and how did you get almost 0 wind noise? I am getting a WRX this summer and want to record videos like this but don't know how to get such good quality video.
I get asked that a lot. I clamped the camera (Vado HD) onto the licence plate with a spring clamp. I got lucky with the wind noise, but have learned that if you get the camera up against something (like the front plate) so that the wind cant go straight past it, you don't get as much wind noise.
from an owners experience, under 6k rpm (before vtec engagement) its pretty plain in terms of power delivery. However, once it engages vtec, its like a totally different car that defiantly holds its own. k20 FTMFW!!
Question 1. How do you record "outside" the car? I mean how do you make sure the camera sits still, and where on the car? Question 2. How do you make sure the video isn't going to be all "wind sound"? By the way I'm not a fan of hondas or JDM but I have to say this engine sounds so pure. Respect!
A little late to the party but: 1. It's either a phone attached to a bumper or some action camera. 2. No wind noise because there is an external microphone inside the engine bay (at least it sounds like it)
Quick question. Love your vids by the way. Seen a lot of them and people ask about how it sounds so good and you reply with that it has an open airbox. But, what does that mean exactly?
@GTiRnissan True. Variable timing and/or lift is crucial to have a car with that much hp/L still be practical. Those first gen ct-r's are so cool. I would love to own one of those with a stock motor and nothing but bolt-ons. I think that would be the epitome of a fun car.
Well, I put the cam right up against the front plate. That helps a lot. If you stick a cam out in the open (like on the roof/fender) you get tons more wind noise in my experience. My GoPro also picks up great sound when I get it back against a flat surface like the front plate so there's not a ton of air moving straight past it.
Nice video, the sound is perfect ;) May I know where you have put the camera ? I'm looking to do a video like this myself! Love these cars, I have a 04 Type Myself.. Thx!
A stock clutch is hard to wear out unless you do a ton of launches and/or never rev-match. I drive my car hard enough to have been through several sets of tires and brakes, but the stock clutch is still going strong. I rev-match everything though. I choose to never slip the clutch between gears. Its not a huge deal at low RPM though.
I actually dislike most Vtecs but god your car sounds like it came from a opera symphony. Good Explanation(i truly understand your point of view), awesome sound, good video. Cheers.
Yeah I agree. The rate of advancement between the 80's and 90's hasn't been equaled since. I think they've just approached the limit of performance for the ever-increasing emissions stringency. They've since shifted their focus to fuel-economy which undoubtedly sells more cars in the US (thanks to our lack of enthusiasts). I worry that the K20 might be the last of the raw performance VTEC lineage due to economy and emissions being demanded by 99% while high RPM craziness is only demanded by 1%
@streetaccord89 Thanks. I've had a lot of luck putting my cameras (this one as well as a GoPro recently) right on the front plate. I think wind noise is minimized if its up against something like the plate behind it rather than standing out by itself like on the roof or something.
Stoked! Just be aware that you might be the only person in the world who thinks a K20 is not "real" vtec. Haha. Without a doubt, the K20 is the most advanced and capable platform ever spawned of the VTEC lineage. That's why Lotus guys stopped swapping for B18's and now use K20's when they really want to build an NA monster.
Hearing good downshifts from a 3-pedal cars is like hearing music from a rare instrument that few people still know how to play ;)
No risk of damaging the motor with high RPM downshifts. Keeping these motors in the powerband is absolutely critical for holding a pace. You don't want to be in 6th gear when its time to accelerate out of a corner, let alone in neutral!
This sounds absolutely amazing for a 4 cylinder car. Unbelievable. Love it.

CasterTown just picked up a 2020 civic sport that still has an N/A K20
They are still hanging around
The K20Z3 is a beautiful , musical sounding engine. I own and have owned several V8 camaros but I do miss that k series scream
I Read the description to this video, it was amazing, I've always tried explaining that to people but never had the right words. You explained it perfectly, Bravo.
That induction sound is iconic..
In a fwd that down shift is called rev matching(keeps your rpms higher for smoother down shifts dosent slow you down a lot either like normal down shifting with out reving)Heel toe is a little different method used for like a rwd car.
Aw yeah, 100% classic music.
I drive a 2002 BMW M3 and your description pretty much nailed it. Having driven both N/A and turbo cars there is something about a high revving engine.
That'S one of the best K20 VTEC sound video I saw! Good job. It's like we can feel the ride.
I absolutely love driving my 8th gen and listening to that crossover 😍 such fun cars to drive
8th gens are special. I still think they are the most fun cars for the money... the last of the high-revving Hondas.
@@CasterTownhad my hopes set for the type s integra coming with something other than a differently tuned turbo k20
alas i was let down

No one can deny that those are sick motors.
This video makes me never want to insult a 4 Cylinder Civic, Ever again.
Great sounding car man!
crazy how the vtec can sound that great
Love this sound!! The k20z3 is amazing.
Good vid. Nice too see a Honda video focused on induction noise, 2.0 16v's are awesome! Respect from a VW guy.
the road is so perfect! nice run man! great sound
