I was part of the saxhorn ensemble for the Stonewall Brigade Band on the tenor saxhorn for a while. It definitely took getting used to compared to a baritone or euphonium.

I guess we can't hear it.

Oddly, this video never answers the question posed by its title, nor does it even mention that the horn shown is in fact a Saxhorn.

It is technically not a saxhorn! The over the shoulder baritone was actually invented by Alan Dodworth prior to the invention of the saxhorn family of instruments. It is because of the famous Distin Family and their international tour on saxhorns that the name kind of became attached to all valved brasses. Kind of like Q-Tip and Vaseline.

@@christroiano121 , you are confusing a name with the definition of an instrument, and while you seem to know the order of invention, you seem to have missed some other historical considerations.
Adolphe Sax did not invent the "Saxhorn" as such, because instruments with that bore profile already existed. What Sax 'did' do was extrapolate a few preexisting instruments into a whole family, and have that family be named "Saxhorn". He also did something that few others had done, and that was codify their bore profile in his patent (technically, the Saxhorn patent specified two slightly different bore profiles, the narrower one for the instruments from the cornets down to the Bb tenor, and the slightly wider one for the Bb bass (we would call it a baritone, same pitch as the Bb tenor) and the Eb bass. Of course, there were some rarer examples made smaller and larger too.
Dodworth invented the SHAPE of the OTS brass instrument, but he did not invent the Saxhorn family. However, the preponderance of OTS instruments made ARE Saxhorns, because that was what was in vogue at the time when almost all OTS instruments were made. For that matter, most brass instruments made for use in brass bands during the period leading up to, and during, the American Civil War were also Saxhorns, for the same reason that OTS are; it is just what everyone was making at that time.
So, your assertion that OTS instruments are not Saxhorns because of their order of invention is overtaken by the fact that nevertheless almost all OTS instrument are Saxhorns due to where and when they were manufactured, and what bands wanted to play in that period, regardless of shape.

youtuuba I was just providing an answer to what seemed like a question you had for future audiences of the video. I am confident in the accuracy of the information I provided and can see what your point is in your response. As far as I’m concerned, we are both correct. Thank you, take care!

@@christroiano121 Seems like "all valved brasses" is not quite correct either. It's more like all valved brasses with a conical bore, other than french horns and Wagner tubas.

A saxhorn is a family of valved brass instruments invented by Adolphe Sax in the 1840's. This instrument is an over the shoulder baritone, not technically a "saxhorn". The term saxhorn is often used as an overgeneralized term much like Q-Tip or Vaseline. It is the name that became popular, not necessarily what all valved brass instruments are...
