TBH if you answer anime to any of these questions that isn't specifically the act of creating it on a professional level then this isn't the job for you. Japan is not anime paradise. In fact it's quite the opposite. Otaku, is not an endearing term. You will not make it a full year. Do this job only if you enjoy teaching or want to do something new and can handle change and culture shock.
Just curious, I'm planning on completing coaching qualifications for football/soccer before I go, will having these qualifications make my application stand out? I'm hoping if I get in I can help with football clubs at schools or in the community :)
Hi Allison, thank you so much for making these they help so much! I graduate next December and I plan on applying next fall. My biggest worry though is that I don’t really have much work experience, I wanted to know your opinion on how much that might affect my application and whether I should focus on other parts of the application or fleshing that out when I do start filling. Thank you!
Hey, we're in the same boat! I graduated from online uni in July and I plan to apply as soon as applications open. I don't have a lot of teaching experience, but I'm just adding the bit that I have and hoping for the best!
Hi Allison! Thank you so much for making this video! I am applying for JET 2022. What if I am not proficient in the Japanese language yet? Would it reflect poorly on my application?
Hi Allison! I'm currently filling out my application for Jet 2022 and I have a question regarding the interests/hobbies/sports section, can I put simple activities such as reading and hiking? Also, what if i dont have any honors or awards would that reflect poorly on my application?
Yes, that's what they expect!! Simply things are fine, just to show you have interests 😂 and no, I feel most people don't really have awards in college anyways, so I think you will be fine!
Were you accepted? I am filling my 2023 application down and also can't think of any awards. Also, did they end up testing your Japanese proficiency at the interview? Thx
Eligibilitiy criteria says to "have a desire to maintain relations with Japan even after finishing" so I don't see why I would put that I want to go home after finishing my JET contract.
Hi Allison, Thank you for a great video! Just one question, regarding the TEFL/TESOL certificates do you think that having one would significantly strengthen my application? Thanks.
It will definitely strengthen it! If you think you're lacking in other areas then it may be a good idea to get it. If you're thinking of teaching outside of JET one day then it would definitely be worth getting!
I'm teaching myself japanese right now (using the japanese from zero books) but do you think taking official college courses in japanese will look better on the application? There are web classes that I can enroll in but I'm wondering if it's really worth it? Does that matter to JET? Or if I can teach myself a considerable amount of japanese will that look just as good?
College courses may look a bit better, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to take them if you don’t want to! Personally I like college classes for the structure, but if you’re able to self-study then it will probably work out fine! I know plenty of people who never studied any Japanese before coming over. They do ask your self study hours, and at the interview they’ll test your skills. Honestly as long as you can introduce yourself they’ll give you a point I think 😂
Very easy! You’ll be offered a recontracting paper around January (normally...this year is probably different though)! I’ve never heard of someone not being offered it their first year
Yeah I heard 😩 But when you do eventually come here it will be worth the wait 💕 Don’t stress about recontracting though, basically all places will recontract you for at least three years unless you are legendarily bad 😅
Wow, this was extremely transparent and really helped me gain insight into the application process! Thank you so much for sharing!
this is SOOO helpful!! i was beginning to stress today and I'm really grateful that i found this tonight and now i can start fresh tomorrow
Hey I'm applying as well for the 2022 cohort. Good luck!
@@brittanygrindle7066 Good luck!! We’ve got this!!🙏🏾✨

After all these years I'm finally applying!
wow the American application has an online process! I had to print mine out and fill it up before dropping it at the embassy in person!
wow that’s hard 😭
Thank you for this Allison!
This was extremely helpful. Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching! I’m glad it helped!! 😊

I have a question does the degree need to be of teaching or do you just need to have a bachelors degree?
Do you get to stay and keep working? or do you have to leave after a set time?
Thanks!
whats the difference between jet and interac?
I was wondering what the process of staying for another year on the JET Program was. :)

@@AllisoninTokyo great! Thank you so much! I am so excited to leave~ bc of the pandemic, the 2020 cohort departure has been delayed until next year
