Taking down notes... Spread the gospel.. After JET When I am... My love for anime is not an asset 🙈 Have an exit strategy.. And.......... It doesn't matter, just hit the point 😉😉😉
Wow, this is very close to what I'd want to do. I work retail corporate as a prints and pattern designer for home and apparel and would love to learn more about Japanese craftsmanship and textiles
Neato! I will admit that I didn't end up spending too much time on that side of my dream to be in Japan because I wasn't near any places to really study. So besides collecting and learning to wear Kimono I didn't really study as much as I had wished. NOW that I'm near Kyoto I think I can try again! I wish you luck in your dreams!! Man, I wish I could design my own fabric! That would be sick!!
this video was super helpful!!! I want to apply to the JET program after I graduate from college. I was bored one day and thought I would write a rough of my SOP... and it is exactly what you said not to write. guess I have a lot of work to do lol. I would love to see a contract vs actual responsibilities video!!!
Oh thank you for watching the whole video! It warms my heart! I wish you luck in your application in the future. My first application was also everything I said not to do. Haha. But by then I had my friend, the “crazy bear hunting Alaskan” who had been accepted and been a jet for a year to give me this idea of JETs purpose, which I only confirmed after being a JET myself. Haha. Good luck! I’ll get to work on that video for the future!! Thank you!
I really appreciate this video. It's such a clear insight on what to expect and what to avoid. You are an angel. Hope you do an 'interview preparation/demo teaching' do's and don'ts too👉👈
This is so refreshing to watch . In Philippines, they highlight teaching experience as a vital part of applying in JET. I myself only have few months experience of online teaching to be honest haha . I'm also an artist at heart and the qualifications I'm on holding on is my experience in intercultural involvement (3 yrs work exp. in middle east). But still I'll try my luck for 2024. This is one of the best advice and info I have watched so far, thanks for uploading!
Thank you so much! ❤ Really helpful video. So many tips for writing a SOP. Before watching I really wondered what I should write about my plans after finishing the program. Now I know 😂
I just saw your video randomly and I'm glad I saw this. I'm gonna edit my SOP! Thank you for your advice! It gives me a clear idea on what should I put on it.❤❤
I’m preparing to apply for JET again as I had to pull my application due to Covid in 2020(after securing an interview 😢) and I needed a refresher and this helped SO MUCH! I love the way you present, you remind me of one of my favourite uni lecturers here in Aus. Thank you for all the solid advice!
Hi, I just stumbled onto your channel! I am wanting to apply for JET at the end of this year, so I am thinking about my application now and this video has some really great advice. While I do have an exit strategy (as a previous exchange student - not to Japan - and someone who is studying cultural psychology I ultimately want to be able to facilitate cultural exchanges in the future. However my first stepping stone after JET is to become and high school teacher (teaching Japanese and Psychology)) this has helped to clarify the focal points of my SOP. Thanks so much!!!!
Thank you so much for the helpful tip. Would like to ask if there were opportunities to take some classes or other programs in Japan where we can enhance our specialization?
Thank you for the tips. I hope that I would be done with this. Good thing I checked out your video. It's definitely hard for someone like me who does not like teaching but teaches. Has TESOL, TEYL certificates and all... Why am I doing this? Well, you know, the urgency to make a living right now. In relation to my different jobs from the past I really love connecting with people. I would love to go to Japan and watch the concert of Radwimps. LOL! I am not so sure how I would put this into my essay or maybe not say it at all. I still do appreciate your simple tips you gave in this video and stated what you said in your essay when you applied to give us more insights how to do it.
@@ADreamInJapan Oh really? Oh no. hehe. Moving forward. It was just last October that I knew about this JET thing and it is quite thrilling to join in such an opportunity. Life goes on anyway if I do not make it. I just placed this and have passed it but I did my best to deliver it in a way that it would sound like an SOP for the JET rather than looking forward to watch Radwimps' concert. Thank you so much again! =D
I’ve already written and submitted my SOP before I knew this video. In my conclusion, I said, I will return to my home country to promote Japan and the JET program through school events and social media presentations. I also plan to study my Masters. I also added to come back to Japan to find an oppurtunities to apply my developed skills in the JET Program which I believe now is a NO NO according to your video. I am worried now. My exit statement is wrong.😢 Any insights about mine? Thank you.
Not necessarily. It sounds a little suck-up-y TBH, but the masters bit and promoting after is great. Returning later for employment isn’t a bad thing. I wouldn’t worry. Sounds like you have a life planned out. That’s what they want. Not an aimless wanderer.
Wow very helpful. Watched many jet program videos but this the best and very informative. I would like to apply but iam in my mid 40's. Is there an age limit as alt?
This is an excellent video, and I really appreciate how it makes the important things plainly clear. I was wondering about the part where you said language skills are a risk factor "for an ALT" because they might want to stay. Would you say wanting to stay is not necessarily a bad thing for a CIR, or is the implication here simply that CIRs need the skills for the job itself and the rest of the advice stays the same? I am applying for CIR this year, and I'm not against adding some bs, but it would definitely be easier if I could just talk about my actual post-JET plans.
Everyone says don't mention anime or movies. Is it really that serious? My degree is in Fine Art so I am very interested in all the arts in japan including animation. O.O
Thanks for watching! My friend who I mention, the “crazy bear hunting Alaskan” was doing a doctoral thesis on Beethoven in anime when accepted into JET. It’s not an automatic rejection if you mention it, it’s just about how you present yourself. Do you sound remotely like a crazy anime obsessed person? Do you come off as a school girl lusting creep who sits in front of a screen watching hentai? Well, I’m sure as an art lover that’s not you. But I’d like to reason that Japanese don’t see anime as art. It’s just cartoons to them. Do you say SpongeBob is art? But, there are some anime inspired by art styles. Or characters that originate from scrolls like the Choju Giga. Sure. You might have a legit connection to anime that is valid to include in your SOP. But be careful. I studied costume design in college BECAUSE I found a love for sewing through cosplay in high school. It was my hobby and passion. My love of kimono honestly blossomed after being accepted to JET. But I played that up in my SOP, and played down my passion for anime because it was IRRELEVANT to my “Masters thesis” Exit strategy in my SOP. So no. It’s not suicide to mention anime. Just be careful how you do it, and how much you do it. More than a sentence I think would be unnecessary. Hope that helps!!
My plan is to try life as a software engineer for 2 years, then if I like it stick with it, if I don't, go into teaching programming (Canada, where teaching is generally well-paying, just not as well as Soft Eng.). I guess that's probably not as solid a plan as they might like, so I'm planning to just write as if I'm committing to one or the other in my SOP. In your experience, do you think they'd prefer someone going into a big (but not terribly relevant) career or a teacher?
Interesting question! I think someone with "big" dreams is possibly a bit more lucrative to them as they see you as less of a possible "stay in Japan! teacher. I'd go with that. Sorry for the late reply!
I'm so glad that I've watched this video prior to submitting my application. Thanks!

The bear hunting Alaskan was a huge help there. Haha. And I typed it out this time so it’d be easier to edit. Haha.

Yes, JET makes that clear on the application

Do people not know there’s a prompt?
Did they do a prompt this year!? I didn't have anything more than a general "propmp" of what SOP meant.
This sounds like how their CIA brainwashed them and telling them how to "work". 😂🎉
