I was there! I worked back stage on the Mike Douglas Show in that day and had heard rumors during the early morning hours before the show was taped, that she was going to be on the show. The audience wasn't told because of the producer's uncertainty that she'd be able to make it. This was a few weeks before her death and her alcoholism was so advanced that she looked like a frail old lady when they brought her down the back stairs behind the set. It took two people to get her situated on the stool. They handed her a microphone and adjusted her clothing. She was very gracious. She was introduced to a stunned audience. It was an amazing surprise. When the doors opened to the stage, she came to life before our eyes. Her posture straightened and she began to beam her great smile. What followed was the most amazing performance I ever saw in my life. I was only about twenty feet away and watched her transfixed along with the audience. I've told people that what happened that day was unforgettable because you could hear a pin drop in the studio during the rests in her lyrics. Everyone felt that she almost couldn't get through her songs and we were all pulling for her. Amazing performance and an amazing woman, despite all of her challenges. A great great personality. Asian Guy in TO It’s not real sad, but when you see her life played out on the big screen and you hear her say things about wanting happiness just like everyone else...it kinda gets to you.
This video shows that even in 1968 Judy's voice was still in tact. Her breath control, the smoothness of her sound, her unmatched sensitivity, her moment-to-moment acting, and the incredible drama that she brings to the song at the end are a master class in singing.
I remember this! I was there. I was setting up a small buffet in back. She was amazing. She walked in beaming with confidence. She seemed strong and put together that day. She was a powerhouse.
Please everyone stop posting sad comments oh the tragedy blah blah come on people you think because Elvis is dead people oh he was a tragedy or to Marilyn Monroe anyone is going to post that no they are going to say that obviously no she was a beautiful women and Judy was too so stop posting sad comments just cherish the magic that was Judy Garland.
What people should realize is that she was a very ill woman at this point. The fact that she was able to produce such an amazing performance is absolutely astounding. Drug addiction is a real disease. She should be awarded the same respect as a person who had cancer or something similar.
The thing I like best about Judy Garland is that she sings with the same enthusiasm when she's dying as when she was emerging as a star. Her appreciation of her audience, too, is matchless.
+Emma Bradford judy was the kind of woman that concert venues would desperately want if they were in financial trouble because they knew for a FACT that she would sell the venue out and then some!
@dt4ever04 She did die of an overdose, but it was the kind that built up in her system over a long period of time rather than being spontaneous. Essentially her last year on this earth she was dying. May her sweet soul be in peace.
Yeah!! Absolutely!! Judy had a perfect tone for sad songs, we can really feel the lyrics. I can't hold my tears listening "You'll never walk alone". That's what I call A GIFT.
JUDY was actually in better voice at this point than she had been in previous years. Often in 1966-67 she struggled through songs but here her voice is open and full. She didn't look her best here, but vocally I think she did well on The Mike Douglas Show - and I remember watching this as a little boy.
Her delivery is bittersweet. Her pipes are still good, her ability to communicate verbally and nonverbally is in a class by itself. Makes me cry when she "kicks in it".
my one regret was that l never got to hear her in person. l would have paid whatever it cost for a ticket to one of her concerts. There will never be another like Judy Garland
I remember family members telling me that she had lost her talent by this point in time. I've watched her singing this song and How Insensitive so many times and all I can say is... they were wrong. So wrong. With less than a year to go, she hadn't lost the power and beauty that is on full display in these timeless performances.
Judy died 44 years ago, and even after all that time, she is still vividly remembered. Her name will live on for many more years. She was a true star, despite her troubled life.
Well what we witnessed here was a legend towards the end of her life, giving it her all, and in large part, succeeding....there will NEVER be another Judy Garland.
Judy never ever lost her style. This gentle beautiful performance showcases all that technique. Lovely lady. Mother, sister, friend -,and the original VOICE! God bless you Judy. We still love and appreciate you.
God LOVE this woman, and allow her peace. She's been a constant inspiration/source of support for me since my mother first "introduced" me to her years ago. Judy lives on, in my heart and I'm sure in millions of others..
Totally breaks my heart, brought me to tears, I FELT her spirit and heard her spirit and soul cry in pain from what the selfish ppl did to her. Very sad, such a great talent and giving person to be treated like she was by worldly people. THEY WILL ANSWER TO GOD. Revelation 21, GOD WILL make all things right again. HE PROMISES this to all who turn to the Lord.
Judy has been remembered as one of the most beautiful voices of all times, it´s a pity nobody could listen her voice when She asked desperatly for help. But each time we listen her singing is like she never left.....Thank you Judy wherever you are...
By 1968, Judy's voice wasn't as good as it had been. But... The emotion in this song is amazing. For the first minute she's upbeat and yet vulnerable. She's met someone nice. Then around 1.06 she gets to the nub of the matter. "..For once in my life I won't let sorrow hurt me, not like it's hurt me before..." Wounded. But then she's optimistic and defiant! Eat your heart out Stevie and Tony (Bennett)... This is one of the best versions of any song I've ever ever heard. Raw. Emotional. Utterly gripping.
I agree her voice was hit or miss at this time, but listen to this recording without watching the video... she hits notes as steady and clear as at Carnegie Hall. There is also an audio only recording of "It's A New World" she sang in 1968 at a Harold Arlen tribute at Lincoln Center - and it's every bit as good as the 1954 version. Quite amazing... then, other times, her voice wasn't there at all. Maybe because these appearances were not done during a concert tour - so her voice was rested.
I appreciate her even more after seeing the movie. She was older and did not have the voice she had at 21, but still great. And better than Renee's, although she was so great with the mannerisms, it didn't matter.
I can honestly say that if I am ever asked before I die, what I will miss most once I am gone, I will answer, the joy of listening to Judy Garland sing. This woman has touch every part of my soul.. Great clip!
What is most important about her performance here is that she pulled it off with heart and emotion like a sparrow flying through a rainstorm and despite obvious technical glitches still delivers a unique sincerity and punch that was Judy Garland!
I am crying while watching this--she gave so much of her self as she sang--like no other performer. Taken from us too soon--thank good ness we have records of the luminous Judy here. There will never be another!!

Dig the way she sing the word "warm" in that portamento style. Someone warm like you, Judy Garland, made many people's dreams come true...if just for a little while. Love you always.
The Good the Wonderful the Bad --- you can say whatever you want. But America has many legends and Judy is an American and world Icon, no one can take that away
Judy Garland was one of the best ever.. Judy could be the best ever.. it could be argued.. Judy was a doll and just marvelous !!! Just a great shame she left us at such a young age... Judy is greatly missed !!!
Man, only one year before her death and she still sounds fantastic. Knowing how tragic her life was makes the words to this song and her emotions in this song very relatable
The power of her voice is it’s sound and how she speaks and her face and her jaws ... and regardless she will always sound spectacular it is the way she is made.
I so agree. Just: Judy wasn't flawed at all. The world was and continues to be. That woman is the very definition of talent. You can hear her dispair through her performances. The world is cruel because not a single soul was there for her and saved her when she needed it - and since she was still in the spotlight during that time it makes it all so much more cruel. What a world we live in.....
bless her heart.. I cant believe nobody helped her.. my heart goes out to her... RIP Judy Garland... Your an angel in Gods army now.... Gods taking care of you now....
Not her finest vocals (compared to other legendary ones) but a vulnerable Garland rips your heart out (again) with this song. She wanted to pick up the tempo but the pianist dragged. Regardless, this is one of the best interpretations of this song (with loving respect to Stevie Wonder). She makes you feel the meaning and you know it''s from the heart.

Close to the end for her. She's so tiny and frail but still awesome power. Wish the pianist would have taken tempo cue from her- he dragged it significantly. Still a powerful.performance!
It just makes me want to cry my eyes out when I see Judy Garland the last few years of her life. The greatest talent of all, that had the saddest life of all. Her life was one of abuse and pressure from every direction, no one who ever really cared about her, only the money she could bring in. Your fans will always love you Judy!
I was only just saying the same thing. I was introduced to Judy when my grandfather would play his 78 record collection, his beloved Bing, George Formby, Flanaghan and Allen, Andrews Sisters, and naturally, Judy, especially her earlier recordings of Jolson songs. Her later work with Lionel Bart and Orchestra I once considered unequal or not on a par with her other work, but songs like Maggie May, about the infamous lady-of-the-night who frequented Liverpool's Lime Street and central train station, document Judy demonstrating an emotional conviction and authenticity other artists are incapable of approaching. Sheer magic ! Thankyou Granda, I miss you.
She had the voice. She called it a beautiful instrument. Somehow she was able to pluck heartstrings of fans like me. Her show in the late sixties is what go to me. She had this vulnerability that was so wrenching when she walked out in front of that gold curtain. I was young and completely hooked. Now I see the truth that then I denied. Drugs, alcohol. One of the biggest events of my life was going to a concert of hers in Chicago. Show woman, theatrical. But so wonderfully uplifting.
Such a poignant and bittersweet thing, watching Judy be pure magic onstage while knowing how much she suffered. I also observed that two of my favorite Judy songs end in the words, "Needs me." This one, and As Long as He Needs Me.
When I was a little girl I would watch Easter parade with my father every Easter. Best memories. I was so excited when wizard of oz was coming on tv. I couldn’t stand it. She was so beautiful too.
This is a most special one that I cherish. My mother passed away 2 years ago on Valentines day and this was one of her favorites from Dirty Dancing. I play this in Hope's she hears or just know that I'm thinking of her. I miss her everyday, and she would smile as she played this. What a blessing
I love her voice, Excpecially towards the end of this song when she sings louder. She was one of the best singers I've ever heard. As well, she really made people feel she was singing too you..her music makes me feel happy:)

Why the double post as Stacy?
she died in 69.
She died 10 months later not weeks after this performance ! But thanx for the insight
Righteous!
Wowww!!
I've loved Judy since I was a teen-ager. I saved my baby siting money so I could buy her record albums. I love her still. I'm now 74 years old.
Wonderful
Aw
Awesome tragic story. She was sent into the early Hollywood meat grinder
I just saw “Judy”...and now I’m just sitting here crying.
Randy Thompson will I get depressed watching Judy? I just love her as a performer so much

She was born to be a shooting star so that we may all relish in her the passion of her relentless beautiful soul.⭐
All singers sing but this was different, beautiful and rare.
More than 50 years after her death, JUDY GARLAND, remains to be a sensation. A great talent and a one of a kind phenomenon.
She felt every single word of this song to her core! What a legend!
She got that melancholic tone in her voice that was really something man....

Judy takes a song (granted, this is a great song, regardless of who performs it) and, her life-force gives it a power that moves all who hear!💖
