Watching this for the millionth time to let Judy remind me that I don't have to choose between the hurt in me and the smile I wish to give; I can acknowledge both. This performance understands you and holds you. Not by music and word alone, but by being delivered to you by a human soul that understands pain.
It's the only way to sing this song. Depending on how it's sung, it can sound preachy or it can be a song about wanting nothing more in life than to be happy and spread happiness through the darkest of times.
You can clearly hear in this magnificent rendition of the classic song, "Smile" by Judy Garland, why she and Karen Carpenter are equally the 2 greatest-ever female singers of popular music! Both had the incomparable ability to not only bring out from deep within themselves the extreme sadness of the lyrics in a song, but also (along with Marilyn McCoo) to enunciate song lyrics better than any other female singer of popular music! Having said that, Nat King Cole's outstanding rendition of this song remains to this day the single best version of this great song and my personal favorite version!
My choice would be Jimmy "schnozzle" Durante's version He couldn't sing but I still love it I remember him on TV when I was a kid My funeral song which might not be too far away
I know, right?? In many ways she was strong, but then she had such a vulnerability like a 7 year old little girl. I have so much compassion for her. Just a loving lady who did the very best she could and to her it seemed never enough.
lyn, THE greatest performer, male or female. Nobody could touch an audience like Judy. She could make you laugh with her tremendous sense of humor. Then rip your heart out with her next song. She touched people like no one else. Plus she had a mesmerizing presence that just pulled her audience in, as though they were wrapping their arms around her, and they didn't want to let go.
So many singers today belt out songs so loudly like they're going to bust their pipes and all the endless vocal runs like they have a snake caught in their throat. Garland is a master class in true feeling in straight pure singing without all the bells and whistles. Volume that isnt jarring but stirring. Powerful but internal, not external.
SO TRUE - There IS a difference between reciting a poem and singing a lyric as Kanye found out when he tried to sing "Mama" by Queen in one of his diatribatic so called concerts of his in Europe... I love the beautiful vocal control as well as the tones she used in this version..YESSMissJudy..
I was a very odd Millennial child: I loved the Golden Era of movies and my favorite actress was Judy. She was so easy to relate to. She didn't put on the pretense of being famous or anything special- she just was. Her voice always brings me back to watching her in my mom's sewing room: the hum of the sewing machine, the puff of the iron, the quiet cursing when she messed up. Now that she's gone, Judy speaks for her in this song. I've cried so many years in my life that I know they are but a temporary relief for very permanent pain. The only way to lessen the blow is to choose happiness, choose to smile. Thank you, Judy. I hope you can smile now without tears in your eyes. I'm trying.
Beautiful. I'm so glad there are still younger ppl who are touched by Judy. What a sweet memory of your mother. I have 2 millennial sons and they never cease to surprise me w their musical knowledge. YOU like what YOU like and remember Charlie Chaplin wrote this amazingly beautiful song! - from a 64yo who loved Judy since I was very young as well. ❤
Charlie Chaplin didn't write the lyrics to the song. he Just wrote the sheet music. It was soundtrack music made for the 1936 movie "Modern Times". Some one else wrote the lyrics to it much later. Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr, Jimmy Durante, and Michael Jackson all sung this song.
@@MusikPiratCH I don't know if I ever heard it. I'm sure it's good though because Nat King Cole was a great singer. I always liked the one Jimmy Durante did because of his funny new England old timey accent. Another reason I like this version is that version was one of my mom's favorite songs, may she rest in peace.
@@jamesbehrje4279 You’re absolutely right, John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons wrote the lyrics♥️ It’s a beautiful song and will live on forever long after we’re all gone, it’s a classic🙏
Micheal McCann That’s her magic. Her talent was limitless and her voice brought forth emotions that no other performer could. I think many fans expect and welcome the release of tears that are bottled up in all of us. There really is no explaining why her voice touched so many of us deep down. Lol I love taking that ride every time I hear her sing!
There is just something that very few ARTISTS can convey these days, like Judy Garland. To me, I can FEEL her emotional, turbulent, heartbreak and pain, that makes me want to cry for her, the World, and the unfairness of it all. Then she can makes me BELIEVE, she, I, and the World can smile, and keep on gently, persisting through it all, and we will be positive and get there. What a genius!
+Catherine Blair I think part of authenticity of artists like this is due to the fact that Judy here is clearly singing to herself, almost oblivious to the audience, as though this is the same performance she would give in private at home in front of the mirror. Everything today is produced for the masses, forsaking the individual. She wanted to believe this, she needed to believe this song, but just ... couldn't for some reason.
+Christopher Johnson That is so true! Whenever I hear her sing, I feel as if she relating her own personal life story and laying all her emotions bare that her audience can relate to as if they too are reliving the same life experiences as the great Judy Garland.
Catherine Blair that’s why she was the world’s greatest entertainer of the 20th century. When she sang it was her being her and that’s what made her genuine. When she had her weekly series back in 1963-64, CBS gave her a huge trailer for her dressing room and comfort. They producers hung a sign on her door that read simply, “The Legend”. She just wasn’t a living legend, she was “THE LEGEND”. That alone speaks volumes. Thank goodness for RUclips and dvd and cds that keeps her memory and talent alive from future generations to marvel at. With lackluster singers today that use every technological trick in the book to sound good, the younger generation will see what real talent is and what great singer Judy Garland was. Many are floored when they stumble upon her clips and see this tiny woman with the greatest voice of all time alone on stage mesmerizing her audiences. lol we have great taste don’t we?! 😊👍🏻
@Mr. Landale To give proper credit for Smile - Chaplin, in his 1936 movie Modern Times, was helped by movie composer David Raksin (Laura) after being inspired by a sequence in the first act love duet from Puccinni's opera Tosca. John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added the lyrics and title in 1954. An example of one song from that era that had more than one composer and one lyricist.
There is little to add to what's been said here by others, except how lucky we are to have this stunning performance captured in real-time, in front of us, as though we were standing just a few feet away from her. The camera does little except move in and out - there are no cuts, no fancy angles, just a single shot, capturing Judy's brilliance in one continuous take.
She takes my breath away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 42 years later she can do that to me and many more and if you want to talk about some one else then get off here this is about Judy Garland.Rest in peace you are truly missed Barb.......
A superb example of Garland's mastery of layering. With breathtaking candor she says: yes, I've known sadness and I'm singing about smiling. Then she inscribes the lyrics on our hearts. She is saying: smiling through pain is as difficult, perhaps, as your hearing me sing this song. But the smiling...and the hearing... are WORTH DOING. Note also how each time a lyric repeats, she gives it a different point of view. 'Tears' the first time are a child's. 'Tears' the second time are hers--and ours.
Judy's performance here is most likely from the early 1960's on her TV Show. It is an incredibly special rendition that only Judy could pull off. Right to her untimely death in 1969, she always put something extra behind every song that made each performance memorable and unique. RIP Judy
There will never be another of any of these great star's, they are gone for good. Today you dont know if it is a he or a she, they are tatoo'ed and buried in surgery almost every where, they are not like women from the past.....
Such a darling person. Beautiful rendition. She should have gotten the oscar for A Star is Born. You can feel her vulnerability here. And her face is enchanting the way she sings and feels the song. She was so much more interesting in her looks than just a pretty face.
This is the song of her life. She went through so much in her life and had to grow up too fast plus the drug problems ,she got hooked because the media thought she was a better performer with them. From the time she was a kid until she died.

I feel for Judy. I heard she had it rough in life a lot of times. And it does seem like it was very hard for her to sing these words, as I imagine it would be for me if I had walked a mile in her shoes. Even so, the song does give me comfort.
One gorgeous lady - and NO one ever did a song justice like Ms. Garland. From time to time I like to think that Liza might stop by to read the comments and see just how much her mother meant to all of us... and that it would make her smile.
I am in tears...my older sister used to sing this to me when I was really little after my nightmares....I miss her so much. This song used to make me feel better all of the time. It's the first time I have listened to it in nearly 20 years. BEST SONG EVER!
I adore this woman! Even in after gone so many years. She "feels" everything and sings with the most passion any singer could. I have tons of admiration and compassion for her.
This song is about the potential of happiness. Regardless of how tough times are we smile to acknowledge the presence of joy. Remember that happiness comes from within not without.
What makes her performance so wonderful is that she embodies that tension between sadness and happiness, which is the subject of the song. There is a point at about 2:23 where her demeanor changes slightly, and you can see she is fighting harder (through the song) to remain happy. She doesn’t just sing the song, she becomes the song.
Chaplin music score 1936. Lyrics written by Turner & Parsons 1954. The blending of 3 artists, two decades apart, collaborating on what's now a nearly timeless song, was one of the 20th century's best artistic chemistry's we'll ever experience.
The lyrics by Turner and Parsons were not added till 1954. The genesis of the song began when Chaplin was inpired by hearing the first act love duet from Puccinni's Tosca. And film composer David Raksin (Laura) helped him with the melody.
This is so perfect right now. My sister is an ICU nurse taking care of covid-19 patients. She's strong, very strong but even she breaks down in tears at everything they are facing at the hospital amidst this crisis. It is not easy to watch so many people die and knowing they can not even see their families one last time is heartbreaking. Me and my sisters and mother just watched the new Judy Garland movie before things got bad where we are. So I will send this to my sister, the nurse who's birthday is in just a few days time where she will spend it with the patients she is caring for and fellow frontliners and then alone in quarantine at home, in hopes it will brighten her day. What a time we are living in. Stay strong everyone. Find a way to help in your community in anyway possible. Follow health recommendations to not only reduce illness and death but to help those working so hard and putting their lives on the line trying to manage the situation for us all. A big thank you for all those people doing their part to make things better and not worse. And remember, Smile, every chance you get. Do it in defiance of hopelessness, of the fear and the uncertainty of these times. Do it in rebellion against the beast of chaos, smile a knowing smile though the face before you may only snarl and do not go gentle into that good night, but rage, rage against the dying of the light.
@@NHWUSuuu :) it's original though I'd have to say inspired by the world outside of myself. But how much of anything we think or say is truly original afterall? It's generally inspired at least in part by our shared human experience(s). So take it it's yours as much as mine ;)
@@NHWUSuuu i should mention that last bit the "rage rage against the dying of the light" is a bit from a poem of Dylan Thomas' poem 'Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night'. If you've never read it in full I highly recommend you do so. It's excellent.
She's never going to leave me alone 😔, whatever she sang meant so much, especially over the rainbow 🌈 🎶 ✨️ 😌, my daddies classic, loved her, went far too soon xxx
Just watched Cruella. Although I was fascinated by the song, I didn't bother to look for it because I was busy. Just a few minutes ago, I was free and so I looked for this song and I was stunned to learn that Judy Garland sang this particular version. I always pictured her as her youthful self. Young Dorothy. For some reason though, I felt sad knowing that an older Judy sang this. It seemed to me like she grew decades since I first watched The Wizard of Oz ten years ago, while I only grew ten years.
Oh boy did I enjoy this! She is like a breath of fresh air. What emotions she has! This is why Barbara cannot touch this woman. Her emotions are just raw, along with an impeccable voice. I like hers and Diana's the best. It's not always about all those vocal dynamics, but the authentic emotions that are conveyed.
+classanddignity Well, Barbra had her good moments, and one of the best voices ever. But she has always been too pre-packaged. With her, you're always watching a product. Judy, she's PRESENT.
My face is lit with gladness because I am extremely glad to have the memories. Love is a beautifully sad thing though and hiding that sadness is hard. I will Smile anyway. Thanks for the memories, Bug.
Love the way she walks back svelte figure & sequined dress to piano. 0:41 transitioning to solution; rolls eyes up at "sun come shining through" 0:58; hear how she turns the 5th 1:05, "tear every so near" (leans in to mic) 1:32 followed by head-nodding resolve; & Judy's operatic ending; gosh she has pipes! #CharlieChaplin #JudyGarland
I am very sure that Judy and Nat will sing this wonderful song very often - somewhere oder the rainbow - and Charles will listen with tears in his eyes! R.I.P. you three will stay for ever in our hearts!
Catherine Blair....your comments are so right! I've been apart of the Hollywood community since the 1950's, first through my parents, and then in my own work, and I can honestly say that no performer has EVER touched a heart, including mine, like the late, great Judy Garland!
The sincerity and simplicity of her singing is unreal. she convinces me every day to smile , even though my heart is aching. Gld bless her bless her soul.
Look how long you've been gone and our hearts are still empty. You will never know how much you touched our lives. GOD rest your weary body, dear Judy. No one will ever come close to your GOD given talent and The Greatest singing Voice known to man. We miss you so much, Judy! xoxoxo
I heard this song for the first time in the 2014 Emmys and while I was listening I wondered if Judy ever sang this, it just seemed her style of song. To my happiness she did! I just love finding a Judy version of a song that I love! Same thing with Smoke gets in your eyes. Always a joy to hear Judy!
2019.. you can feel all of Judy when she sings this and any song. That was the magic of Judy- you always felt her when she sang... not even Mariah, not Whitney could ever convey like she did..
The consummate stand alone for all time performer--who plucked all the emotional heart strings with her emotive and extraordinary voice--I believe this is what Charlie Chaplin imagined in his true vision--full of heart wrenching angst and solitude and sung by the Worlds Greatest Entertainer from one to the other
Watching this for the millionth time to let Judy remind me that I don't have to choose between the hurt in me and the smile I wish to give; I can acknowledge both. Absolutely. A true talent doesn't need to warble, trill or run scales. Judy used her voice and emotion to bring us music like none other.
She understands that she's not singing to show off how well she *can* sing. She sings in service of the song. To communicate its message.

50 plus years, and I still miss her. Always will.
I remember the day she died. My mom told me, and I got a hollow feeling in my stomach. I still remember that moment as if it yesterday.
Use your smile to change the world, don't let the world change your smile.
🙂
What makes her performance so wonderful is that she embodies that tension between sadness and happiness, which is the subject of the song. There is a point at about 2:23 where her demeanor changes slightly, and you can see she is fighting harder (through the song) to remain happy. She doesn’t just sing the song, she becomes the song.
beautiful!!!!
A beautiful voice for all the ages.... R.I.P. Judy.... You had me at "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".....
Best version of this song.
Yes! 🙋🏼♀️
Michael Jackson‘s version is also very dramatic.
judy garland ... tremendous emotion and control of her emotions in that version of Smile
This is real craftsmanship. Her voice is powerful and effortless. The timbre, vibrato and timing are remarkable. What a talent.
Writing this on 10th June 2022 - the 100th anniversary of her birth! What a great, great performer.
I simply enjoy that Judy did her rendition of Charlie Chaplin's song. I love Charlie Chaplin ❤❤❤❤❤
The 75 people who gave this thumbs down have NO taste!!! Judy was the best. they don't make them like her anymore.
Beautiful song, beautiful voice..
The best Smile Ever..Nobody sang this like her,
YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!!!! Judy's been my favorite singer since I was 12 years old. I'm 61 now!!!! Almost 50 years!!!!
We'll meet in the same place.

A Beautiful Legend ❤️❤️
This song breaks my heart and I love it.
Very good written 😘😘😘
'Do it in rebellion against the beast of chaos, smile a knowing smile'.. Original or borrowed, I don't care, I fucking loved that line.
@@caroschuetz7658 Thank you!
That voice always tugs at my heart ❤️!
Cruella was basically a copy-paste of the Joker. They even stole this song.
my life is very very very very hard but still I'm smiling. :)
:(
Oh boy did I enjoy this!
Now I'm smiling😂😂😂😂love you judy❤❤❤
My face is lit with gladness because I am extremely glad to have the memories. Love is a beautifully sad thing though and hiding that sadness is hard. I will Smile anyway. Thanks for the memories, Bug.
Wonderful sentiment Kate. We'll meet in the same place.
True love isn't das!
Ala inigualable Judy Garland , que tiempos felices
Gracias por compartir soy mayor y me encanta esta música desde Argentina❤
Love the way she walks back svelte figure & sequined dress to piano. 0:41 transitioning to solution; rolls eyes up at "sun come shining through" 0:58; hear how she turns the 5th 1:05, "tear every so near" (leans in to mic) 1:32 followed by head-nodding resolve; & Judy's operatic ending; gosh she has pipes!

De las mejores voces del siglo pasado canto actuó dio sangre en los diferentes escenarios
Su voz aún me eriza mis pelos
Grande Judy ❤
I am very sure that Judy and Nat will sing this wonderful song very often - somewhere oder the rainbow - and Charles will listen with tears in his eyes!
R.I.P. you three will stay for ever in our hearts!
Who still listening to this beautiful song in 2021?

This woman was born to sing and entertain the masses! That’s why she still the greatest even after almost 50 years since she left us. 😊
UNA GRAN CANTANTE Y UNA CANCION MUY BELLA.EPOCA DE ORO.
One of the best, ever!
Catherine Blair....your comments are so right! I've been apart of the Hollywood community since the 1950's, first through my parents, and then in my own work, and I can honestly say that no performer has EVER touched a heart, including mine, like the late, great Judy Garland!
We'll meet in the same place.
Uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time and in equal measure.
The sincerity and simplicity of her singing is unreal.
she convinces me every day to smile , even though my heart is aching.
Gld bless her bless her soul.
Beautiful. Breaks my heart in a way. Always has. So much love in a simple song.
Look how long you've been gone and our hearts are still empty. You will never know how much you touched our lives. GOD rest your weary body, dear Judy. No one will ever come close to your GOD given talent and The Greatest singing Voice known to man. We miss you so much, Judy! xoxoxo
We will never hear great voices like hers!
Why does this song make me cry?
We'll meet in the same place.
ONE WORD-PERFECTION ❤️
2019.. you can feel all of Judy when she sings this and any song. That was the magic of Judy- you always felt her when she sang... not even Mariah, not Whitney could ever convey like she did..
The consummate stand alone for all time performer--who plucked all the emotional heart strings with her emotive and extraordinary voice--I believe this is what Charlie Chaplin imagined in his true vision--full of heart wrenching angst and solitude and sung by the Worlds Greatest Entertainer from one to the other
I loved watching her perform ad a child. Her voice, expressions...but as an adult, I so understand why my Mom loved her. As I now do
Beautiful song sung by Judy Garland
This is beautiful. I may be able to sing, but never like this, EVER. You can tell shes singing because she loves it.
WOW such an extraordinary voice. I wanna cry and also wanna dance crazily!!!!
It's like a mother telling her life story to her children, dun know why I'm tearing up😭
