  • There are 39 stops on the London Tram network down in Croydon, and there's an unofficial 'record' as to the fastest time that you can visit the, all in.
    As it only takes less than two hours, it's something I've been meaning to do for ages, to see how quickly I could do them ...
    The 'Alternative Challenges' site is at: www.explorertic...
    The Top Times for the Tram are at: www.explorertic...
    (Josh still holds the fastest time of 1h 35m 15s)

    Nice one Geoff, i guessed it would not be long before you got around to trying that run! I grew up in the Thornton Heath area, so i can remember when a lot of the current tram network was a proper railway. Also used to explore the old lines and the tunnels after the railway had closed down. Have not lived in the Croydon area since the 90's, so only ever got to see the start of the tram project - the roadworks they caused when being built were a nightmare. Last time i travelled from West Croydon to Wimbledon it was on the old railway, that must have been back in the early 80's, good to see the line had a future.

    • @rogerwhittle2078
      @rogerwhittle2078 6 лет назад

      A feature of West Croydon - Wimbledon line, when it was 'a railway' not a tram, was it seemed to run on a Thursday and come back on Monday and there was never anyone on it. The last time I remember seeing it, it was a two car, slam door stock. Now, it is rare to see a tram with less than a third of its capacity on board. Even the last tram (I don't think they run all night) is always a half full.
      I plotted out (on GoogleEarth) what I think was a viable (and possible without massive engineering works) single track branch line, from a 'Y' at or near Beddington Lane, across Mitcham Common, next to the road (Mill Lane?) along Commonside East, through a little dog leg at Cedars avenue and thence alongside the railway (a bit snug, it's true, all the way up to a stop end at Edington Road (?) which was the stop end of the old Eardley Road Carriage Sidings. I bet the trams would be packed, even if trams ran alternately from Streatham Vale to Wimbledon and Croydon.
      It's about time the Croydon network was extended and there have been plans for Anerly (to Crystal Palace Low Level and then up to the Parade - effectively High Level, I think!) and another to Bromley?

    • @100SteveB
      @100SteveB 6 лет назад

      @@rogerwhittle2078 It was the old BR blue two car slam door units that i remember. I used to go to Lanfranc school and we used to pop along to Beddington Lane Halt some lunch times to watch the old signalman operate the crossing gates to allow the occasional empty train to trundle past. I agree, a link to the other side of the common would be a good idea - a very built up area. Would be nice to have a link from that area down towards Mitcham, and even better to have a link up to Croydon from there.

    Using the TFL journey planner, the total tram travel time for the 39 stops adds up to 85 minutes (including the Birkbeck - Beckenham Junction 'extra' leg). This leaves just 10 minutes for the two 'walking' sections - plus any additional waiting time - in order to beat the 1:35:15 record. Possibly do-able, but I reckon that record won't be beaten anytime soon!.

    Geoff, all trams terminating at West Croydon go to New Addington during the day. Beckenham Junction and Elemers End Trams (occasional odd West Croydon) serve only Wimbledon and then reduce service to Therapia Lane and Wimbledon after 20.00 therefore you’d made the error at Reeves which probably would’ve saved you 3-5 minutes!

I’ve ridden 2 of 3 (Newark, Jersey City) available in my home state of New Jersey, but I’ll definitely try to catch a Croydon tram the next time I’m able to visit my friends in Sanderstead! Coombe Ln is actually the closest stop, but E Croydon is the most convenient.

Went to New Addington before taking in the lines to Elmers End, then finishing off at Beckhenam Junction though and this is because the only planning I did was checking the trams were working. I then just got the first tram at the stop and apart from taking the walk from Reeves Corner to George Street I stayed on the trams the whole time.

    When the Crenshaw line opens, along with the new downtown subway, a similar challenge will be possible in Los Angeles. Right now, one major line, the Gold Line, can only be reached by boarding the subway, and the other two lines run outward from downtown with no parallel trackage. Also, there aren't going to be good commuter rail bypasses until the LRT reaches the San Bernardino Metrolink stations like Claremont and Montclair.

    I think we do our challenges in Sydney Australia in a more challenging way, we have to start at Sydney Central Station and End at Sydney Central Station, you can not use any other method to get around except the trains and be on a train that allows you to stops at all current 175 stations. It was 178 with one line out of service for converting to metro driver less trains once it comes back in we will be at 188 stations. Our next challenge day is the 14th December 2018 for the 175 stations challenge.

      @@terranaut Hi Matt Last time I did it we did the 178 stations and took us 17hrs 15mins due to a train running out of sequence that put us on the wrong line, the record set by another competitor on the day was 15hrs 49mins. I am hoping to get under 16hrs this time which will be on the 14th December. As i mentioned in my first post we have to do it all by train, so that means you have to travel all stations on some lines then come back to where it junctions off the main line. Here is a link to the Sydney Trains map transportnsw.info/sydney-trains-network-map to get a real idea check it out on google maps to see the distances traveled.

    Because of the new timetable, the only tram doing the Croydon centre loop is to New Addington and back - all the Elmers End and Beckenham Junction trams go straight through to Wimbledon. As such, the run round to Centrale is always needed if knocking out the two central Croydon stops - so the right decision made there.

    Midland Metro could do with a video as it runs down a disued railway and as some secrets. (1) as there about several stops built on the original location of the GWR railway stop. (2) there is a new line in the making coming 2023.
    Priestfield is the first stop from Wolverhampton on the disued line heading towards Birmingham but in its past Priestfield had four platforms one towards Birmingham and London Paddington, two towards Wolverhampton and onto Liverpool and one towards Dudley-Worcester and onto Oxford.

    English appears to have the proverb 'combine pleasure and business', whereas Dutch says (translated) 'combining the useful and pleasurable'. Then there is the not-yet-existing proverb 'combining the useless and pleasurable', a rather more appealing thought (to me, at least). But this is very, very cool, a nearly succeeded record attempt on an average weekday. Fantastic!, and good luck the second time.
    Next: all the bus stops?

    Here's a challenge for you, how fast can you do all the Manchester Metrolink stops? Use a System One Bus & Tram ticket so you can avoid backtracking between ends of different lines (e.g. between Bury and Rochdale, use the 471 bus)

    I tried this a couple of months ago (though my goal was not to beat the record but to beat one of my colleagues who is on the leaderboard), co-incidentally by mostly the same route as Geoff's original plan, but managed to mess up by:
    * Missing my George Street connection when running from Reeves Corner, like Geoff did.
    * With the next tram from George Street (which was for Wimbledon), not knowing my route well enough and mis-remembering Reeves Corner does not have a stop on both sides, trying to switch sides there, and being taken all the way back to Wandle Park to change sides instead.
    * Not having such a kind tram driver at Elmer's End when running from my connection to the tram, with the doors starting closing with me two seconds away.
    At that point I gave up, but plan to try again in the future.
