  • Sea swimmers may know that Lion’s mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata) are the most venomous of the indigenous species in Irish waters, but they may not know that this season’s generation is far larger than usual. The lion’s mane jellyfish is not only the largest jelly species in the world, but it also harbors a powerful sting that it uses to catch its prey. Its poison is more than enough to scare away enemies, thus creating a safe space for both the jelly and other species that are lucky enough to be immune to the toxin. Dr Doyle (UCC) is co-author of a recent paper on jellyfish stings which recommends vinegar and 45-minute immersion in hot water as the best treatment, rather than rinsing in seawater which may make a sting worse.

You are so lucky to be so close to the Cyanea Capillata (Lions Mane Jellyfish)! I also saw the Aurelia Aurita (Moon Jellyfish) in the background. What an experience!
