  • After a short break, I'm back and ready to compare these two octave fuzz pedals from Electro Harmonix; the brand new Lizard Queen, and the slightly older Octavix.
    Which one is your favourite?

The Lizard Queen is a combination of two FREE DIY pedal builder's circuits that have been widely available online since 2004. It is Hemmo' "Bazz Fuss" into Tim Escobedo's "push me-pull you." The only modification done to this arrangement was the addition of the octave pot, which other DIYers have used to adjust the octave in green ringer builds. The "balance" knob is the input gain pot of the push me pull you and like you observed, doesn't have much affect on the sound until you crank the octave.

The Octavix definitely sounds more Jimi Hendrix and the Lizard Queen a bit more Jack White

Thx for this, it was highly experimental, and right up my alley :) Both EHX pedals were new to me as well as the Eckeepoo ( odd name btw ). I think the LS-2 is the unsung hero of many great pedal boards that I have seen. Yet many people don't talk much about it. Now here's an interesting request for you guys, please to do a Dan Echo video, owned mine since 1999 and I love it, and yes I've owned several other delays but there is some magic in that pedal.

Thanks! "Highly experimental" is what I aim for on this channel. Haha! 😄
Totally agree about the LS-2. It's such an incredible utility pedal, and can be used in so many cool ways.
Thanks for the Dan Echo recommendation! I'll keep a lookout for one...but if I don't find one for a decent price, I might have to hit you up to lend me yours! 😜

Great demo! So the Octavix is wilder in my opinion, with the Lizard Queen sounding more refined. I think there are more tones available on the Octavix but the Lizard Queen can’t really do anything badly, it’s just more restrained. Would you agree? I’ve got far too many octave fuzzes at the moment otherwise I’d definitely grab a Lizard Queen as I can actually see myself using it more.

    • @PedalExperiments

Yeah, I think I'd agree with your assessment. 😄
Oh I'm definitely with you on the octave fuzz thing! I've got several at this point. I should really do a big comparison video with them all...

og style octave fuzz pedals have a ton of phasing weird that happens in different registers and notes on guitar. i generally use fuzzes along with pitchshifters for melodies, etc since they have more clarity but then use boosts and/or distortions into the raunchy og octave fuzzes for gnarly leads. :)

I’m so pleased that this video exists. I don’t currently have an octave fuzz, but have owned two relatively affordable ones in the past. Not chasing any particular sound, if you could only go for one, which might be the smarter option? I’m leaning toward the Octavix for covering the most sonic ground - and - they’ve been around a while so are regularly available preowned.

These both sound pretty great to me, but the pedal I just demoed in my most recent video - the MXR Sub Machine - is the one I'd recommend! Definitely check that one out.

As a personal opinion, I think that the octavix, if you know how to tweak it, it just doesn't sound really good, it as well offers a very wide range of old and new sounds, growls, synthy, muffled, open, wide overtones and the 9 and 24, delivers a lot. Cheers.

I just wish it had a gain knob and a more traditional tone control.

I have the Lizard Queen on my pedalboard and I'm not 100% happy about it. The basic sound is quite good but as soon as you dial in the octave past the 12 o'clock point it gets thinner and raspier. When it's full on it's way too empty and in general the octave is barely audible, even above the 12th fret, where by tradition, most octave fuzzes sound best. The absence of a knob dedicated to the amount of fuzz dialled in, is also a minus here. In my opinion Josh needs to re design this one, since it has potential.

    • @PedalExperiments
      @PedalExperiments  9 месяцев назад

I totally agree. The base tones are great, but the lack of control over the effect really detracts from it, and reduces how useable it is.

  • @youngblackman2122

I might try making the lizard queen off a layout I found online. Worst case scenario, someone might buy a handwired lizard queen and I could make maybe a tenner off it lol

  • @youngblackman2122

Also the lizard queen has not much muff in it, which kind of disappoints me. I wish the first stage was like a muff clipping stage or an lpb1 or something (maybe both)

I like the sound of the octovix more than the lizard queen, but the graphics look bad in my opinion. I wish we had more of the vintage ehx visual design on the newer pedals because that lizard queen is sexy.

Not the word I'd choose, but yeah I also much prefer the look of the Lizard Queen!
Tbh, these pedals are so cheap, you could always just buy an Octavix, strip it, and repaint it with your own design. Or send it to Gear Ant or someone to repaint it for you!

@@JakelikejakefromSF4936 weird. I have found that only big muffs can be anywhere in the chain, but all other fuzzes had to be first. Strange that it doesn’t work with others at all. Return it if you can. That shouldn’t be the case.
