Thanks 1A Auto for your how to videos, I’ve referenced many times in the past!
I could use your insight, I have a 2012 Silverado 5.3L, today the engine light came on and the code was “P0011 Intake Camshaft Position System Performance”
The lady at the auto part store said the sensor needs replaced. Any way I can find out for sure before I take on a job like this?
I would hate to potentially battle a seized sensor like you guys did in my garage only to discover it was not the root problem. Any help would be awesome, thanks!

Once you get the sensor spinning, spray it with Berryman carburetor cleaner and continue to spin and wiggle the sensor the most you can. There is carbon built up on the sensor that the carburetor cleaner can dissolve allowing it to come out. Just fought one for about an hour or two and once I sprayed the carb cleaner on it, it popped out in about 3 minutes just like it was new.

Took out the 10mm retainer bolt, unplugged the cable, and it rotated very easily. Didn't seem to want to pull out even when gently prying. Decided to disconnect the lower plug to get my had in a little better and noticed a skinny blue wire coming from the wiring harness had abraded and broke away from the connecter. Repaired that and I'm good to go. Served as a god reminder to ALWAYS check and verify all sensor wiring is good BEFORE starting to replace (or even buying) the part. Great video, as usual!

Thank you for the Video, I just did the swap on my 07 Silverado 1500. So, This way, pulling the sensor out is a pain. I started there but quickly decided to just pull water pump and damper then remove timing cover. Once timing cover was off i still had to use a soft rubber mallet to tap it out from the inside.. there was no way i was going to be able to pull this brittle sensor out the front, save yourself the headache, buy a few gallons of coolant, and go the route i went.. it was a chore but got it done in a few hrs. With my truck this requires pulling efans and radiator to be able to pull and reinstall damper. So far seems to have fixed my P0300 code.. good luck !

This video is not a 2011 chevy 5.3, not where my sensor is and I have 3 clips I have to take off and not sure how to remove the one clip with a red square in the middle? Possibly the red part is the safety lock to just pull up on first?

I just replaced mine on a 2009 Silverado 4.3. Instead of using pry tools to get the sensor out I used a small cold chisel and tapped it in between the sensor base and the little mounting plate under it. Just tap the chisel around as much as I could wile also turning the sensor back and forth. Once the sensor came out enough that the cold chisel was too small I used a thicker chisel until the sensor was out further. I did try to pry it after that but the top of the sensor broke off. Thankfully there was enough sensor sticking out of the cover that I just squirted it with WD40 and used a pair of needle nose vise grips and pulled it out. Really glad I found this video cause the repair manual says to remove the water pump. I hate draining the cooling system cause it's usually a mess. Thanks A1auto.

I just was going on my Silverado 2500HD 6.0 to replace my sensor. What ALL of the videos I watched do not show, is the LS with VVT. There is absolutely no way that you can do it without a pulley puller - and absolutely not in 45 minutes. On top, the pigtail wire with 5 pins has 3 screws to take out. One of this screws is behind the pulley - not reachable without a lot of work. I put everything back together and I bring it into a shop where a mechanic can break his fingers. I’m gladly pay $100 to replace it. That’s ridiculous that 95% of videos show how to replace the sensor on engines without VVT. I could do it on them in 30 minutes myself. 😢

Oh no...It's not corrosion of the cover that causes them to stick. They swell up over time. Sure wish I saw this video a couple days ago!
I was fixing an oil pan leak on my 5.3L with 326K miles and figured I'd replace the timing sprockets, chain and oil pump while I was at it. Turns out the timing sprockets, chain and oil pump were still like new. Barely a a groove in the tensioner surface. Would have been good for millions of miles. Anyway, I had a great idea to take out the camshaft sensor to clean the cover real good. Broke the sensor and couldn't get it to budge. Tried pressing it out. nope. That only crushed it. Ended up getting it out in pieces. The new one slid in no problem.

"I'm just going to use a XXXX" Haha...do you sell that speciality tool you made there?
After going through all that headache, id definitely be putting on an OEM replacement to make sure im not back in there again.

It's really this much a pain! Mine just broke off... clean engine with the aluminium block, so don't know why it got stuck so bad.
Updated, did the exact same thing to pull it out. Wood block, screw and all!

Just did this on my 09 Sierra, I had to drill it out, doing so it broke into pieces and I’m afraid some might have fell behind, i got 97% of it out but I know a small bit fell in. Will that effect anything? Time chain? Or cause damage to the cam/ block?

+bman6954 Having metal in your engine isn't good. Try draining the oil into a clean pan, and inspect both the oil and plug for metal bits. Good luck!

I'd had lost my ever lovin' mind. Seriously, watching this makes me not want to do the job 🤣
I ended up doing the job, but had to go the water pump route. Not any easier. Just messier.

You wonder why engineers make everything more and more complicated. Why not choose an easy place every mechanic could reach at without taking things apart before reaching what you replace? I always loved the simplicity of a VW Beetle. 6 screws engine out. Enough space to work on the engine and transmission. Today? Right.

He made that slide hammer specifically for this video and this particular job. You can’t buy that thing as he has it configured. They didn’t tell you that.
