How Far Will RMC Go? | Coaster Theory

  • Today we take a look at beloved American manufacturer Rocky Mountain Construction, or RMC for short. RMC stepped on scene with their hybrid coaster design back nine years ago in 2011. The company originally repaired and maintained older wooden coasters, however, after coming back to the same coasters year after year, they knew there was a better way to do it. What if they took off the old wood track that cost the parks a lot in repairs, and replaced it with a modern steel track… This was the beginning of RMCs hybrid. From there on out owner Fred Grubb hired well known coaster designer Alan Shilke and together they designed the I-Box track. Around the same time, they also made a wood rendition, named the Topper Track. As their name grew throughout the years they wanted to expand by giving smaller parks the option to purchase cheap, small, and world class coasters. This marked the beginning of the Raptor track, the world's first single rail coaster. Though it's been a debate among long time coaster enthusiasts if this truly is the first single rail coaster, you can't deny that it's original. With RMC nearly two decades, we take a look at all of their current coaster models, see how they have changed throughout the years, and how they might look in another decade. How far will they go? What are their limits? And the big question, what's necessary? RMC somehow managed to make elements like the Zero G Stall or Step-up under flip, or even the 270 Degree double inverting stall possible. As of present day 2020, Rocky Mountain Construction has built twenty-one coaster over the United States, Europe, and Asia… and they have even more on the way with coasters like Jersey Devil and Iron Gwazi. The future of this company looks unmatchable, so what heights can we expect to see RMC reach?

    The funny thing is that I’m not wild about drop towers or dive coasters, but the coaster development I’d love to see more than any other is a full-circuit coaster with a straight 500-foot drop.

    I think RMC may even develop a single rail gauged somewhere between the Raptor and T-rex. Something like what they produce for Skyline Attractions Skywarp model. That track could accommodate side by side seating for a greater throughput, and put them into the 200-400 foot range before further developing the T-rex. From the outside looking in they my look to be on top, but their struggles are real. They (or at least the parks that bought them) are still having issues with the second gen trains and many complain the first gens run shorter layouts and still limp into the station. They also didn't sell the first gen raptor model to meet their expectations. They also will likely need to develop a higher speed lift system because they will most likely need to design rides with steeper lift mechanisms to fit in smaller spaces as land is a concern at many parks. They've already commented that any future launches would be done in-house. Don't get me wrong, I love the end product just trying to shed some light on some of the kinks that might slow their roll along the way.

    I think there is so much hype about Cedar Point having a 500 footer that they're gonna have to do it. If they could have the footers go into lake Erie that would give them plenty of room or if it rode along the causeway that would be an awesome entrance!

    • @auzza5394
      @auzza5394 5 лет назад +2

      Doubt they'll be allowed to build into Lake Erie. We might see a 500 footer when Magnum XL reaches it shelf life but until then I think we've still got a long way to go before we see a 500 foot coaster anywhere.

    • @BamaRailfan
      @BamaRailfan 5 лет назад

      Magnum and Gemini are two of their signature rides. I wouldn't look for either to be replaced any time soon. I think they could potentially add a T-Rex without removing any existing coasters. There is plenty of room on "Adventure Island" for a ride that could coexist with Millennium's track. If they needed a bit more room, I could see them removing Iron Dragon or Cedar Creek Mine Ride, but I'm not sure it would be necessary.

    • @puppetuppers4806
      @puppetuppers4806 5 лет назад

    RMC can keep doing what they’re doing and stay profitable. Until GCI debuts their steel track, they really don’t have any competition in the hybrid field. I’m super exited to see where the Raptor model and the upcoming T-Rex model goes as those coasters are just cool, and almost as fun to watch as they are to ride. And I’m looking forward to the next gen StrataCoasters. Hopefully RMC will have one.

    Believe it or not there IS a new Raptor going into a tiny waterpark out in the middle of nowhere in South Dakota of all places! The Layout is going to be an exact copy of Wonder Woman Golden Lasso Coaster at SFFT (i know it is at the Six Flags park with the huge quarry wall) and it is meant for small parks like that so it is awesome to see one finally go to a park where it is meant to be cause all the big parks have been getting them so it is nice to see one be announced for a small park even though it is QUITE LITERALLY out in the middle of nowhere. To be honest I never imagined RMC getting to 500 feet in the first place. With how tall Intamin has gotten at 456 feet (Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure) and how slowly B&M is catching up (Fury 325 at Carowinds), I was thinking one of those two would get there first. In fact wasn't Intamin the manufacturer of that 500 foot Skyscraper roller coaster that's supposed to be built in Orlando?

    • @sheeple04
      @sheeple04 5 лет назад +1

      I don't think they were the manufacturer who was supposed to build that, because the ride itself was just a concept and not a final design yet so a manufacturer probably had not been chosen yet. Personally, I doubt any manufacturer reach 500ft anytime soon. This is not the coaster wars anymore where parks wanted to outdo everyone. Steel prices are currently also stupidly high so a coaster of 500ft would cost a insane amount of money. Simply not feasible for any chain or park I think except Disney, but they don't build tall coasters.

    Thanks Zack. Really got me thinking. Everyone says a 500 foot coaster at CP but honestly that would have to be a Polercoaster. Not enough room there. They would have it with a hotel in it and a drop tower on one side facing the lake. You also have to take in account the lake effect keeping it closed most of the time. Next best bet Six Flags Magic Mountain. Although I have heard that RMC has a somewhat Rocky relationship with them but if the 2021 rumor is true then maybe not. I heard some people say the park was not as pleased with TC as they expected. Also I couldn't see Six Flags dropping $100 million on a 500 foot model with the extra earthquake proofing. So that leaves Kings Island, Carowinds and Busch Gardens Tampa/Sea World Orlando as the only acceptable parks. Disney and Universal could afford a $40-75 million ride but would never build that tall. BGT could have a hurricane wipe it out one day so that to me leaves it put of question. SWO wouldn't make that much investment. Kings Island based off of Orion will not get it either they made a budget Giga so why outdo the flagship park. I could see Carowinds getting it in all honesty. Seems like there is room and they are investing heavy into it too......although now just thinking about it Canadas Wonderland might be interesting hmmmmm.

    • @sheeple04
      @sheeple04 5 лет назад

      I simply don't think it's feasible for any park since it's just wayyyyy too expensive and you can still attract similar crowds with a shorter coaster. Also Cedar Fair definitely wont work with RMC again anytime soon since well, Steel Vengeance and Twisted Timbers were pretty bad from a parks perspective, technical issues, structural problems and barely increasing park attendance. Same with Railblazer for barely increasing attendance.
      P.S. Orion is not a budget Giga. It costs the same as Fury 325. Why? Rising steel costs. And the fact that it isn't as long as Fury doesn't make it a budget Giga.

    I don't think CP would get a T-Rex. it is unrealistic for them to go 500 ft because of Lake Erie winds, and if they go shorter, people will be mad. I don't think any park that can afford a 500 ft coaster would buy one either. it is so extra that you could buy a hyper and a giga and bring in 3x the crowds for close to the same amount of steel and shorter cranes

    • @howenator

      Steel Vengeance and other RMCs airtime max out at around -1.5 g from what I've heard and SV only looks to have 5 moments of brutal air time so they just don't have many ridiculous ejector airtime moments and have more drawn out layouts focused on speed and inversions as well like Iron Gwazi and Zadra

    Awsome video. I think anything taller than 400 ‘ would be just for bragging rights. They need to focus on different elements and coaster styles . Higher doesn’t anyways equal better I would love to see the I box track used as a giga or even used above as a suspended the possibility’s could be almost endless.

    I don’t see anything taller than 500 feet coming anytime soon. The cost for such a coaster would just be massive. The T-Rex is going to pop up somewhere soon, but it will stay very rare. I hope and think that we are going to see a lot of Raptors being built, and this will be a massive change for the industry. The other manufacturers have to come up with new ideas, or they are going to lose a lot of customers.

    Honestly I think that a 600ft coaster is about were they max out. Probably only a couple of them too. Call them Hexa coasters, theme one after a bee, call it a day.

    Unlikely, but I could see s&s perfecting their air launches from the thrust air models and building 400-600 foot coasters, kind of plagarising intamin and their stratas. But not layout coasters. Just launch---> top hat ---> end.

    So the first ever 500 feet polercoaster will be a T-Rex from US Thrillrides in collaboration with RMC? Raptor and T-Rex tracks could be the perfect indoor coasters or even fit in darkrides (suspended or not) I live in the Netherlands and Untamed is fantastic!!! Like a mini SteVe haha!

    I would like to see innovation in raptor (or that T-rex) trains, like wing seats facing outward on both sides. I see it as the new and extreme version of the mad mouse, the more disconnected the rider feels from the track, the better.

      na guy I don’t think they will get rough, if anything maybe a small rattle. Some RMCs have slowed down a little bit since they opened so I’m sure if anything happens, they will just slow down over time.

    RMC is gonna far enough where someone will have a heart attack on one of their 400+ foot coasters and die. That’s where we’re headed, I can’t imagine the coasters 10 years from now.

    Can't deny that RMC is innovative. But they have the downtime issues. And don't get me started on those 2nd Gen operations. But at the same time, and innovative company will do that. Innovative rides aren't perfect

    It won't happen but Six Flags Over Texas SHOULD BE the First Park to receive a 500 foot T Rex Coaster. It is the Park Most Responsible for the Modern Theme Park. A Monster T Rex Running Around the perimeter of the park would be EPIC!!! Plus Everything IS BIGGER IN TEXAS!!!

    • @sheeple04
      @sheeple04 5 лет назад +1

      Uhhhh Over Texas isn't the most influential theme park ever by a long shot.
      Disneyland Anaheim was. That established what a modern theme park should look like.
      In fact, the original idea for Six Flags Over Texas was for it to be the Disneyland of Texas.

    I've wanted to love RMC from day one of the announcement that they were coming to my home park, but I have two issues. 1. A small group of people actually fit comfortably in the seats of RMC trains. 2. 200 foot tall lift hills are pointless when all the rest of the hills of a coaster stay below 150 feet. What's the point? It just generates too much speed which power slams people into the already uncomfortable seat restraints as the trains top all those little hills after the epic tall lift hill.

  • @sheeple04
    @sheeple04 5 лет назад +1

    I think that we won't see a RMC T-Rex, or any coaster for that matter, reach 500ft. It's just way too expensive. Think about the amount of steel needed for that project, and the rising steel prices. Yeah your probably looking at a 100 million dollar coaster right there, while you can still attract a whole lot of crowds with a 300ft coaster which are much much cheaper. And if we ever see a 500ft coaster, I think its more likely parks go to Intamin. Intamin has much more experience in the field and they are proven with their tall coasters.
    About RMCs future, I think they will become less influential in the future. Their Hybrid conversions will happen rarely, and sometimes they will build a ground up hybrid but not much more, but the Raptor will be their main driving force. They also really have to rely on Six Flags a lot since Cedar Fair and other chains are simply not very interested in the company, and will rather go to other manufacturers like Gerstlauer, B&M, Intamin and MACK Rides. Some smaller parks might buy a few Raptors, but the small thrill coaster scene is very crowded with Gerstlauer ruling supreme, and Vekoma rising again.
    To summarize: Doubt we will see a 500ft T-Rex, and RMC will become less influential and has to heavily rely on their Raptor track and also rely on Six Flags. Some small parks might buy Raptors but other manufacturers are more influential there.
