The Seeds - Pushin' Too Hard (1966-67)

  • From the embryonic genesis of psychedelic music that was 1966, another memorable band with a singular major hit single, The Seeds. Originally released at the end of 1965,
"Pushin' Too Hard" failed to chart and was re-released in October 1966. It peaked at #36 on Billboard and #40 on Cash Box on February 25, 1967 (CB date). Despite its rather lackluster performance on the charts, the song has become a legendary garage rock classic right up there with the likes of "Little Girl" by Syndicate of Sound, "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)" by The Electric Prunes, "Talk, Talk" by Music Machine and "Psychotic Reaction" by Count Five (to name but a few). Many of these songs were highly danceable and often were played at discotheques.
There is a slightly dark flavor to this song with its relentless alternating two chord rhythm played on organ. This makes the vocals seem somewhat unworldly and ethereal. A carnival ride from hell of a dance song in other words, threatening to whirl any dancer about like a crazy, out of control top. So, welcome to the Inferno ... introduced, innocently enough, by a cheerleader.

I feel I could write a whole book about the alluring and hypnotic power of two things:
    1) This phenomenal song by the Seeds,
    and,
    2) The superb choice of this outstanding vintage dance video.
And, maybe I could write another book about this not-so-talented, but absolutely gorgeous wonderful cute blonde in the cheerleader outfit! A guy could lose sleep thinking about THAT gal!!! Be honest!

I used to watch Mike and another channel. They both made such good videos, with the great music and appropriate video show, then one day I came back, and the other channel was gone. I have to keep watching and appreciate what there is left.

Unfortunately she is uncredited, unknown. She appeared in two Westinghouse Air Conditioners Commercials in the mid-1960's.

Thanks so much! Unfortunately I lost all the source footage when my computer crashed in December 2018 (this video was made in 2017). The tech tried to restore the lost files during the repair job but was not able to. Luckily, I at least had all my videos backed up. I know the cheerleader appeared in two Westinghouse Refrigerator commercials and this was one of them. I have used her in several videos from both. The other dancing scene besides Carnival of Souls was from La Dolce Vita (1960). I am a fan of Fellini's work. The live footage unfortunately I do not recall where that is from.

The actress in the cheerleader outfit reminds me of Barbara Anderson, who made a guest appearance in an episode of Star Trek called "The Conscience of the King" in 1966 and would be the right age and appearance.

That was a good episode too. I remember that and her, not sure though if this is her or not. The cheerleader is uncredited, she starred in this Westinghouse commercial and one other one.

It's definitely not Barbara Anderson although there is a resemblance. Barbara was even more visible at the time for her lead role in the series Ironside.

It'll probably take the rest of the year to put them all back on ... plus I'm always doing news ones besides. Eventually, when everything is up, it will be like it was on my last channel ... one, two, or three new videos a week most likely.

    Hi Mike,
I was entranced by this video and sent it out to all my friends on Dec 17, 2018. Never downloaded it and then...it was gone (the video was 79vuhKSQ6eA and ended up "Video unavailable - This video is no longer available because the RUclips account associated with this video has been terminated."
They LOVE to "terminate" accounts, don't they? Glad to have you back!
And, oh yeah, this one won't be deleted from my vids until the End of Time now. :-D

Thanks Kent! In a way I hate re-uploading all my old stuff (as well as the new stuff I've done exclusively on Vimeo since I got kicked off YT back in August 2019). It's a lot to do only to have the same thing happen again ... sooner or later. I don't know why YT just doesn't replace their termination policy with a simple blocking policy. They are really good at blocking videos, partially or entirely, based on copyright. Since they can sniff out age restricted material before I even have a chance to age restrict it myself, you'd think that would solve the problem. None of my videos are for kids, I have "not for kids" set as default, and they never were. Not even "The Candy Man" by Sammy Davis Jr., my very first video done back in 2012, was for a children's audience. I have always played to an adult audience, note that I mean stuff that only an adult would remember or appreciate. I don't want kids on my channel, a lot of them are little trolls besides.

@@mikemunrowsretro8973 You're a brave man going up against the cancel culture algorithms...thank God!
In addition to redefining music I loved, you've introduced me to music I missed from my own times. Case in point, I was living in Belgium when Melanie did her concert to that very (very!) conservative Dutch audience. And it was your video in 2018 that introduced me to Melanie! I don't know how I missed her? I was buying Jimi Hendrix 45s in 1967 along with LPs from Pink Floyd. Mott the Hoople. Led Zeppelin. Beatles Sgt Pepper. Watching Benny Hill on TV (3 channels in Belgium). (-:
Regarding my work with old books, I characterize myself as a literary archaeologist...finding and reconstructing lost and forgotten authors and books. See the Wiki on George Groslier for an example. You are doing the same with obscure music and film (actual *film*, though it's now digitized). I love it.
Anyhow, Pushing too Hard and the cheerleader you found are haunting. In a good way! Thanks!
