    When Mariah Carey introduces staccato, legato, falsetto, headtone, chesttone, and whistle register on her every tour.. she also taught a lot of singers to be confident in dodging risky notes if needed.

      During the Mariah Carey, Emotions, Music Box eras.. she sang her songs live and made it sound more difficult on every tour. In her Daydream era, her voice started to become mature.. she had more control over her vocal agility.

      @@vg6761 if Butterfly and My All were recorded on one of the earlier album, it could've been as difficult as other songs like If It's Over, I Don't Wanna Cry.. and she would probably sing it live with so much growl... 'Forever' is hard for her to sing as it is.. she recorded it so smoothly and it's hard to replicate the smoothness and exhausting riffs and runs at the end part of the song..

    Up to 1996 and somehow 1998, the stacatto singing was a stylistic choice. Past these years, it became an adaptation to the unhealthy state of her voice.

      was it stylistic or was it an adaption to her changing voice? with her nodules, it takes less effort to sing staccato, especially due to her nodules, she doesn’t have a lot of vocal stamina, which only decreased with age.

    • @goldilox3147
      @goldilox3147 2 года назад +5

      Also she grew with age you sing like this you. have to train your voice it doesn’t happen overnight also a lot of other things can add to it. Look at Celine ruin prime example stunning range and great voice now she’s resting herself her body if you don’t take care of your gift or talent you can loose let’s face it 00s she was finally free from things but she never recovered herself.my family is my aunts where singers but not string singers and as they aged their voices to need training it’s all about taking care of yourself even Christina Aguilera has the range she’s 40 she’s got talent her voice never struggles and it shows she takes care of it and herself

    The stacatto singing is a choice due to her impossibility to maintain a stable tone or note without her voice cracking or going into a rasp. At some point, her nodules which were responsible for her unique and beautiful sound but I do think as time went by, they became her worst enemy.

    Her nodules were greatly responsible in giving Mariah an insane, practically non-human, vocal ability but as she's aged the nodules (mixed with obvious vocal damage, etc.) have been more of a problem for her and far less of a blessing. Either way, I will continue to listen to her sing in "present day" (as the years go by and she continues to sing live) for the rest of her life no matter what she sounds like because, hello, this is THE Mariah Carey, and I've been a huge fan ever since I watched her live debut in real time on Arsenio when I was still a kid. So, vocal damage and declination or not, there's nothing that could make me stop enjoying her voice. Thankfully, quarantine did wonders for her and even her confidence has started to go back up and I'm looking forward to what this new era will bring.

    • @icydelight3693

      nodules were never a blessing they were always a problem… even whistle register can be achieved without nodules… nodules only give you unintentional rasp, but Mariah could do it on purpose, she never needed nodules

    The stacatto like singing doesn't feel as weird in Emotions tbh, because the song is quite fast paced and it lends itself to experiment with this type of phrasing. It bothers me more at the end of Vision of Love, for example, where it completely breaks the climax imo. Still admirable that she manages to perform at this level with her nodules, and it's only a real issue in her belting range (and not every time), her lows, falsetto and whistle are very well preserved.

    Funny thing, I do like her the thinner husky whiskey tones she has now. It sounds great on her albums, and I'm sure as she ages, her voice will continue to evolve in new and interesting ways. But watching this really reinforces why I vastly prefer watching performances from her prime years over anything live now. Her voice was fuller and she connected rather than dodged notes. She wasn't forcing or straining her voice, and the happiness of the song came through in singing itself, not just the lyrics ("empty" is such an apt and useful term for live stuff now). I know this song is tough to sing, but the parts where does it in her lower register (or that famous prime performance of hers where she sings it with an obvious and merciliess cold) prove this song could be lowered and still be just fine. I don't understand why she doesn't just do that instead. (I also wish she would hire a Broadway opera vocal coach to help her maintain the voice she has, rather than obviously strain herself.) And please make more song/vocal evolutions if you feel inspired! These are very informative in the best ways.

      I'll never ever understand in my life how she doesn't have a vocal coach like the singing athlete she should be. Even in the recent documentary in the part where she talks about her voice she just says: "My mum was an opera singer, very disciplined, doing all of these exercises from bottom to top...and I just rest and use humidifiers" 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲 Thats like going to the gym to do proper workouts VS having walks from time to time, voice is made of muscles after all.

    Admittedly I didn’t know this was a problem as early as Butterfly era (it was a thing during Daydream and Music Box but it seemed more tasteful).
    I also agree with the Rainbow era being the last era where the song felt natural. It was almost as if Mariah was still in her prime even though her voice just wasn’t.

      In 1997 on butterfly because I had listened to her voice continuously almost daily for 7 years I heard very microscopic changes to her voice particularly on the song butterfly.
      It was like hairline fractures. I also noticed every album after that the deterioration seemed to be a little bit more profound until it evolved to where we have arrived today with the demonstrations that you have in this video.

    • @Solo-vh9fm
      @Solo-vh9fm 2 года назад +14

      @@cynixie8862 of course she can. but she’s never been a technical singer, contrary to popular knowledge, it’s just the way she naturally sang produced this lovely resonant, sometimes buttery, sometimes gritty sound but from a health pov, it’s not a healthy way to sing and she didn’t always place her sound right and that can blow your voice out. The problem is she still tries to sing this way up to now so her condition gets poorer and she has less stamina to push air out properly.
      If she got a vocal coach to teach her to sing with her vocal health in mind and with a bit more diaphragm action she probably could get that support back.
      I think the only era she’s ever tried to sing more technical is Charmbracelet but as you will notice there’s not a lot vibrato or running in her vocals which is a sign that her approach in that era was not developed.

    • @Solo-vh9fm
      @Solo-vh9fm 2 года назад +2

      @One Mariah can say what she wants, but just like her age, technique is another thing she's not the most truthful. Nodules affected the timbre and range of the sound, it does not give you asthma. She shouldn't be having difficulty singing the first verse of A No No or the chorus of Shake It Off (and before you point out the songs being too far, she had sung the latter before when it first came out). She clearly has had poor phrasing for a long time (discomfort sustaining notes, chopping lines containing mid to low-mid belts up, getting out of breath at speaking range) and I can give you countless examples at least post-2004. Another symptom of bad breath support is how she had to switch a nasal style in 2018 when she clearly has a much darker voice as shown in 2017 (which if we're being honest her sustained notes were shouty) and prior. If you want to blame nodules, fine, but then ask yourself why has the situation with nodules changed, because nodules don't just naturally flare up and down, they're a vocal injury.
      Also, resonance is heavily overused term, let's use the word open. If Mariah's learned to sing like that through vocal training (spoilers she wasn't and she even said her mother discouraged her from singing in certain ways) Plenty of singers have naturally open voices, Barbra Streisand being the most famous of examples.

  • @reginaldbrooks2981
    @reginaldbrooks2981 2 года назад +18

    For starters, the song is almost impossibly difficult to sing. It’s all about breath support more than style of singing but you are correct, in her later years she typically sings the 90s material in broken phrases. Breath support is almost nonexistent. Good breath support is how you get a connected sound and fluidity, which again is especially hard to do in a song like Emotions given it’s tempo, runs and overall technicalities.

  • @onedollarbleach6891
    @onedollarbleach6891 2 года назад +10

    The original performances in emotions era are refreshing and vibrant, everything is connected and sung fully. I appreciated her for keeping the integrity of the song here. 93-96 it’s more staccato and it breaks the original style but I think it was a genius adaption to the song. In a way I feel like it allows it more space and a makes the song more dancy while still honoring the original. Now after this period I feel like it got more and more fragmented over the years as her voice declined. The spacing became a more of a crux rather than just stylization like the years prior

  • @PhenixJoe
    @PhenixJoe 2 года назад +9

    I wish she would get her nodules removed. I know it’s somewhat of a risk but the surgeries have come a long way, and the odds are very good for her. Even if she lost her whistles, I would take a strong belt over the whistles anyway. We’ve had plenty of whistles over the years.

    It might have to do with her switch her vocal placement from predominantly chest to predominantly nose/mask. Singers like Phyllis Hyman and Ella Fitzgerald are more inclined to use staccato runs and scats with their nose/mask placement while singers like Anita Baker and Toni Braxton use more legato due to their vocal placement being predominant chest based. This is what happens when you put a lot of whistles in every song people will be expecting her to be able to do it. Not to mention she never dropped her keys down so she is not competing with her 21 yr old self. Whitney learned to drop her song down at least by a 1/4 of a note and it puts less strain on the voice. I could see her struggling on a few of her performances, like she was getting voice paralysis from singing in a key too high, when her voice is tired and trying to belt while singing in a high key will definitely do it! She should have made her mic a little louder so she didn't have to belt!

    Nice video but to some people: You guys the woman is 50 now... give her a break 😂😂😂 Even Celine (who took care of her voice so well!) has been lipping for the past 5 years. People get older...that's that. Also at the 1996 Tokyo dome performance hahahaha, she could have easily connected the "so" but after singing the same song 1000 times and considering the set list....she was probs like "let's just so-oh-oh" it 😂😂😂

    It might’ve been a stylistic choice but to the average person who doesn't analyze voices like us lambs too the staccato she briefly started adding in 93 and then starting heavily implementing in 96 doesn't sound as healthy or natural. Anytime I've shown Mariah clips to friends or family that don't overanalyze the voice like us lambs they thought she started losing her voice in 96 because of the different techniques she started using.
    Then I think after 96 she couldn't help but add staccato and breaks because of her nodules...

      Is a decline and a personality change too. I mean, she can find ways to move her voice even tho it actually resists to the agility in form of rasp.
      Examples: her quarantine performances, where she actually sings in a more legato style instead of doing staccato, but her voice shows resistance to the agility, and that’s mostly bc her voice is thicker now.
      IMO, she should find ways to move her voice with slower runs, and changing the arrangement of her songs to slower ones, the whole 2010’s decade is a proof of her voice sounding better in slow arrangements.

    Only thing tommy did right for mariah was limit her touring. Sony knew what and how priceless her voice is. The more she toured the more strain she put on her chords and nodules. If yall remember pre butterfly she was only doing 6 to 7 concerts a year. The she came out running with butterfly and thus began the damage to those pipes. But they are still magical and beautiful and makes my hair stand at attention. But guys she's been doing this for over 30 yrs now. There's bound to be damage from where she never slept. She is still an icon and she is the moment.

I don't blame her for not getting them removed. It must be a very tough decision for a singer to make. But let's be real, Can Mariah sing? Yes, of course! Can she still sing well? Not so much anymore. I still love her though.
