I don't think Frances Farmer was crazy. She was just a woman ahead of her time. She wanted to be free, outspoken, a woman who led her own way, and in her time she was punished for not being a submissive, shut up and sit down and just look pretty woman. Frances was smart and beautiful, they didn't want her smart. Frances rebelled and acted out because she couldn't be the woman she wanted to be. People of color and women were oppressed and restricted and if you didn't be what society wanted you to be at that time you were punished, like Frances. If Frances was around today, she would be a powerful, successful, independent, admirable woman, the woman she wanted to be back then. Hopefully, she'll get a second chance at life. I know she went through hell in those mental institutions, back then they treated the mentally ill badly, rape, abuse, experimental procedures was common, and considering Frances was a beauty, you know she got taken advantage of in those mental institutions. I have to say Frances was disrespected in that This Is Your Life interview. No one wants all the bad things of their past thrown in their face. The interviewer just wouldn't quit, he was relentless. Frances looked like she wanted to snap and cuss him out but was holding it in. If she was younger she probably would have cussed him out! We admire, respect, and understand you now Frances. You are a pioneer of feminism and women being strong and independent, you paid for what you couldn't be so we could be today. I hope you do get Washington and Hollywood back.
+MusicandDancing4Ever I believe you hit that nail right on the head ! I myself (long story) am a victim of 33 Electroshock Treatments....that ruined my life even more and made me forget PRECIOUS MEMORIES(EVEN OF MY BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN)........I was not responding to medication they said !! They said I was "Raging"...No I have been known my whole life to set an ASSHOLE straight when I feel they need it ! and it just comes out in a loud voice !! They could not kill me,change me or destroy who I am or destroy my personality ! My "head shocker" MD...did it for money !!!!!!!!!!! We where lined up like cattle, and he would shock us all,and leave asap !(Cowardly prick)......RIP ALWAYS FRANCES
@@motorcityman401 shut up jerk ,even if she was ,it's really rude to judge people like this .she wasn't crazy rather you are and proles who judge people like you.
Frances Farmer...one of the saddest stories in all of Hollywood history, and unknown to the vast majority of todays movie goers...I urge folks not really familiar with her story to google her and learn her story, and watch everything you can about her on RUclips...
what a beautiful and gifted, talented lady she was, what she went through in her life was horrific, the way she was treated was deplorable, but her will and inner strength got her through-God bless her!
The word was in the thirties, when Frances appeared on screen, you simply could not take your eyes off her, no matter who else or what else was happening...what an amazing tragic story....
Kurt Cobain was extremely angered by how women are treated, particularly rape victims. Hence, the songs Polly, Rape Me, & Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle. The late Cobain named his daughter after Frances Farmer. Two legends. Two mysteries. Two tragedies.
she went to my high school, i got to see her original yearbook, she was the debate club leader of course. what a sad story and a lovely woman. she grew up a few miles away.. the house she lived in is still the same, its eerie looking, definitely gives you a pit in your stomach!
No matter what is written about Frances Farmer, whether it's in books or articles, it most likely half truths. Everyone, especially in Hollywood has their own agenda and wants to appear as being helpful to Frances, when they should've probably left her alone. More damage was done to this very sensitive artist from outside forces than Frances did to herself. Human beings really sucked the life out of this great girl. Many of those people, and they know who they are should pray for forgiveness
she was an incredible woman! I even had the chance to interview a man that grew up with her because i was doing a report for school. he said that her mother was very controlling and wouldnt let her come out and play with the other kids, she was made to study the bible and play piano, everyday! i think thats what made her so rebellious. i admire her and wish i could have met her, in a way i feel like i have.
I also read and heard that her mother was responsible for what happened to her. She being a parent should be ashamed of herself for not being supportive and a loving parent.
Thanks for all your comments Claudia. The music you wanted is 'Lover's Rhapsody' played by the 101 Strings Orchestra. There will be another tribute to Frances Farmer later in the year with all new images. BAZ
I have also been to Western State Sanatorium which is the hospital she was placed in, that she got the lobotomy at supposedly. It was torn down partly in the 70's but its a creepy place! lots of upset spirits there, and at Frances's home very disturbing place, completely overgrown, decaying, windows are covered have been for years with blankets and matresses, i knocked on the door and i could see in the window, it looked like someone very disturbed lived there, no one answered. so sad.
@dia33386 Yes what is that music? at 3:08 it is really beautiful. also at the end of the movie "francis" Jessica Lange portraid her ,, there was a beautiful song while they were showing This is your life, That was beautiful music and wish I could fine what it was? :) Frances, a "normal' gal.. lol reallly.
It is actually Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, or at least an excerpt from it. He wrote it for Paul Whiteman's band. Woody Allen uses excerpts from it for the movie Manhattan. Oh, I thought you were talking about the melody at the beginning of the video. Woops.
@MPL029 because it looks like no one has touched it in 20 yrs, totally out of place for the neighborhood its a prime piece of real estate near the beach and so its a little weird, the roofs caving in, the paint has chipped completely away to reveal a moss covered house, the windows are all covered with mattresses or sheets. lets just say if you were on her street that house would stand the heck out!

Ok now I remember seeing her in some old movies. I am reading her bio now. Between the evil that is Hollywood and an evil, demon-possessed mother, it's a wonder she survived at all.
Her mother did commit her. However, John Rocco's book is filled with partial truths and by his own admission inaccurate reports. The WA hospital subjected her to repeated electroshock treatments, but gang rapes and lobotomies were not part of her "therapy" there. Frances was upfront about the terrible way she and other female state patients were treated. I surmise that she was BiPolar with possible psychosis. She is a tragic symbol of how especially gifted artists are misdiagnosed and mistreated
@Cypher402 What book? Cuz I'm currently reading "Will There Really Be A Morning" and is is the autobio of Farmer. I'm just halfway thru. I hope she finally got rid of that nutty mother.
Controversial often means: People feel so threatened by their own hypocrisy that they refuse to try to understand the source of the criticism. I don't know if its true, but it's sad: "Her mother...had (Frances) committed to a sanitarium. She spent the next five years in mental hospitals and was forced to take insulin shock treatment. She was reportedly also gang raped and given a partial lobotomy." (From John Rocco's book: "The Nirvana Companion: Two Decades of Commentary, p. 153).
@MPL029 did you not read what i wrote?? i said it has alot of things that were later claimed to be untrue, never said that book was 100% truth. its still a good book and there are SOME facts in it. I mean watch the movie frances, its not really all that factual AT ALL. I met a man who grew up with her, and he confirmed what i wanted to know. too long to post on here though!
Why doesn't this woman have a star on Hollywood, she's been wronged so much in life, she never got recognition while alive, give her due now'⭐️
A Star for Frances!!
I agree
What a gorgeous lady! Saw the movie and was just shocked by her sad life. I agree on Jessica Lange - she looked so much like her too.

She was hearing voices and seeing people that wernt there, she definately had mental issues and they could have been brought on by her alcoholism.
I wish she had told us more about her experiences in Russia.

C'è anche il film Frances, con una straordinaria Jessica Lange.

Wow! Well said my friend!

Francis Farmer was so beautiful and glamorous. It is too bad the way her life turned out.
No matter what is written about Frances Farmer, whether it's in books or articles, it most likely half truths. Excellent tribute to a wonderful star.
Frances Farmer is a true legend.
Thank you.

beautiful, troubled and not understood.
The camera loved this girl !! notice how its hard to believe its the same girl through out!
OMG how beautiful she was. Elegant, sublime and with tear in her eye. Not a single trace of a bitching arrogance...
A woman could not be more beautiful than she.

She was a beautiful woman and that voice wow!
She should have her own star on the Walk of Fame ....PERIOD END OF STORY.Tony has spoken.

Howard Hawks said unhesitatingly that she was the greatest actriess he ever worked with.

@jawbella The music title is 'Lover's Rhapsody' and this version is played by the 101 Strings Orchestra.
Thanks a bunch, again.
...will have her revenge on seattle
as mount st. Helens. .....
Rhapsody in Blue - by George Gershwin.
Like Marylin Monreo she was one of the most beautiful women Hollywood still has
Beautiful video!
It is actually Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, or at least an excerpt from it.
He wrote it for Paul Whiteman's band. Woody Allen uses excerpts from it for the movie Manhattan. Oh, I thought you were talking about the melody at the beginning of the video. Woops.
I did not know that she had a successful tv show in the late 50's and early 1960's.
I can't explain why but she reminds me of Glenn Close.

Frances Farmer was beautiful; its just a shame the way her life took a turn for the worst.
Ok. what's the song at the end of this? so beatiful, I should know this but don't.. anyone know? thanks. J
She was beautiful and intelligent. Just a wonderful lady who born in a wrong era.
Ok now I remember seeing her in some old movies.

My wife had Frances tattoo on her leg she totally gets her
Thanks.

She hated all of it so much you can see pain in her forced smiles.
@Cypher402 What book? Cuz I'm currently reading "Will There Really Be A Morning" and is is the autobio of Farmer. I'm just halfway thru. I hope she finally got rid of that nutty mother.
Im inlove
