In this video guitar lesson we will take an in-depth look at how to play Extreme's acoustic hit "Hole Hearted" in it's entirety.
As the final single from their highly successful Pornograffitti album, "Hole Hearted" is a fantastic guitar workout powered by the brilliant Nuno Bettencourt.
The entire track is played on a 12-string guitar but still sounds great on a standard 6-string acoustic guitar. You will need to tune your guitar down one half-step to Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb in order to follow along with this lesson and the original recording as well.
The intro is relatively simple with just a simple D major chord shape moved up to E then F. However, after the full band kicks in things really get ramped up in the difficultly department.
Guitarist Nuno Bettencourt launches into the verse rhythm which contains lots of fast hammer-ons, pull-offs, double-stops and country inspired open string licks. It definitely isn't for the faint of heart and will be a great challenge for most guitar players.
When attempting to play this challenging section of "Hole Hearted", focus on practicing it one phrase at a time like I teach it in the video lesson. After that, you can proceed to put all of those pieces together into one cohesive unit once they have all been mastered.
The pre-chorus uses some interesting chord voicings that require you to shift up and down most of the fretboard. Even though you will have to move around a lot, the chord forms themselves are relatively simple.
The chorus is a bit more laid back when it comes to moving all around the fretboard. You will still need to concentrate on getting the bass line to pop out of the mix but the chords a relatively simple here as well. However, the end of the chorus contains a quick arpeggio picked sequence that should probably be isolated and practiced on it's own before throwing it in with the rest of the chorus.

Thanks so much! I've been playing Hole Hearted by ear ever since Pornograffitti was released. It's hard to unlearn my version but you make it much easier. One of the best features is the split screen. I'm horrible at figuring out when to pull on, off, and pluck but the split makes a huge difference. Thanks again!!

You are a fantastic teacher. There are so many ways to learn a song these days with cord apps and tab apps and break downs everywhere and then these types of videos are also on apps . I learned to play by ear in the 70s and learned the names of the cords off a poster that didn’t anything but the basic . I watch people to learn and your fingers are very easy to follow. You also named the strings and many people never considered those of us that don’t know the names . I learned more in your 15 minute video then how to play the song and that is rare . Also thank you for not showing us The Easy way to play the song just assuming that only beginners follow these videos and need to learn less complicated cords . Have a wonderful day 😊
