    Awesome video, really great tips on what to look for. One more thing on The 100 series that tends to fail sooner than previous generations are the exhaust manifolds. I have seen the exhaust manifold runners separate from the mounting plate that sits against the cylinder head on a few of them. Keep up the great work!

    This is great information and should be used for every car purchase. In the northeast like me rust should be the first thing to look for.
    I’m truck shopping. I drove a 2017 Silverado Z71 today. $33k. The rear fenders/ wheel wells were already chipped and rusting. 5 years it would be falling apart. Just in time to have it paid off. Buy from Florida Texas California or Washington if you can.

    Great video -- I'm not saying you shouldn't look at other areas of the undercarriage for rust, but the main thing is the frame. Including the cross members. Including the one that is directly in front of the spare tire, which can be hard to see unless you drop the spare. Also, the brackets that hold the torsion bars. I hate to say it but other parts can be replaced (even the driveshaft and certainly exhaust). I'm not an expert or a body guy but my thoughts on rust are: surface/shallow = all are going to have this. Flaky = may be okay but start looking closer. Larger flakes and chunks = tap and knock on them, and if the metal feels week/sounds dull, the rust may go all the way through.

    You can pump the brakes with the key off until you feel that there’s no pressure anymore, and then turn the ignition on, but with the engine off. You will hear the pump running for a couple cycles until the pressure is back.

    ABS accumulator pump failure is very very common on these and a very expensive fix even if you do the work yourself. These are well-known to have their frames rust apart. They are also well known to go over 400,000 miles with no mechanical failures other than the ABS so it's a trade off. They are truly outstanding vehicles otherwise

For example check out how much it is to replace the Brake Booster assembly for this car vs. one which has vacuum-based brake booster. Know what you're buying. Looking back, I would pay 5K for a v good one.

    You inspired me to get a lexus. I recent brought a 02 Lexus Lx470 with only 140k. There are a few problems I need to get second opinion on the cause. 1. The car makes a cluck sound as it decelerates. It up shifts very smooth. Trans fluid looks good (darkred). What do you think the cause is? 2. This might be related to issue 1, when shifting between R to D there is a massive cluck or a kick. Your input on what the issues maybe will he greatly appreciated.

    • @BeginnersLuckGarage
      @BeginnersLuckGarage  3 года назад

      Glad to hear it! 140K is like a brand new rig. Clunk noise sounds like it could be slop in the shafts. I would grease all U joints and slip yokes and change the trans fluid. mine had a clunk when decelerating as well but went away after greasing shafts a few times. Also had a clunk when shifting into D from R but changing trans fluid really got rid of that as well. I have videos on both but I'm sure you can find lots of detail on ih8mud.com Great site for anything related to these rigs. Good luck and thanks for the comment.
