  • With two days left in the trout season my friend Quinten and I utilize some time off to target arguably the most gorgeous fish in North America -- The Brook Trout. The day didn't go as planned...but it ended in the best way possible.

You can hardly get better than that as far as brook trout goes. Big size, well proportioned shape and...unbeatable colours! Congratulations for that beauty.

It is frowned upon to hold coldwater fish, such a trout in the gill plate for obvious reasons because there is too much of a risk damaging their gills. The correct way to hold them is to support the belly and weight of the fish with one hand and clamp the other hand around the tail, but always lifting the weight of the fish and support them under the belly.

That’s a lovely brookie, looks around 3lbs. My record is just shy of 3.

Amazing fish. One thing to keep in mind when handling any fish but especially brook trout is to keep your hands away from its gills and gill plate. Fish hooked in the mouth and handled properly have a low post catch mortality rate 1-2 percent. When miss handled like touching the gill area mortality rates can climb to over 30 percent. I harvest lots of fish including brookies but I decide if I'm going to keep or release the fish before I've even landed it and then act accordingly. Not trying to give you a hard time just educating. Keeping release mortality low allows for populations that can sustain more harvest and become more robust. Tight lines! I hope to see more monster brookies on this channel.
