I actually appreciate this stripped back version. Makes you really focus on the narrative, which, to me, has always been the highlight of this song. Nice job, man!
A much different take, but appreciated. Like he said, he saw this as a Leonard Cohen song. But honestly this came out as a Townes van Zandt song, which was wonderful.
It's certainly gorgeous, but (A) what IS up with that baby in the background; and (B) it's too… nice at points? I dunno. (Also, the lack of "It's Casual" at the end feels like the worst case of interruptus, honestly.)
Absolutely gorgeous vocal. Adore the song and while it wasn’t my favorite arrangement, it sure was a great vehicle for his voice. Only downside was the extraneous children noises from which somehow the artist should be insulated. AV Club needs to do better in regards to that issue
I think I like it more than the original, but it's grossly inferior to the William Shatner cover that Ben Folds produced. You'd be hard pressed to find a version that leans harder into the bite and disdain the narrator has for slumming rich people.

Nice job, man!
Love the lyrics-forward arrangement, thank you Taylor!
Beautiful rendition of an unassailable anthem. Well done!
Oh. My. Gosh. Best cover I've heard of anything...ever? Jeeze, Taylor absolutely nails this.
Ah, the OG AV Club meme band…always good to hear the sweet Laurel Canyon sound…
He's no Shatner but I dig.
That is honestly my favorite version of the song.

Taylor, this is exquisite, even down to the ambient kid sounds.
Wow! 🔥🔥🔥
never heard the message before in the original wow! good job dude!
Dawes
these feels more like a cover of shatner's version than pulp's version
I really like the performance but.... is anyone else hearing somebody's baby in the background lol?
My money’s on Taylor’s boys.
That was very disturbing

Man, that was ill-advised. No tension or drama. He's talented, but arrangement does the song no favours.
How should he have done it then?
@MrLee204 Better. With tension and drama. He identified these as elements of the song that stand it, but then did a very flat version of the song.
