    Haymitch's attitude comes from being the only mentor in his district. He was the only one to advise the tributes, and so far they all ended up dead. So he finally resorted to drinking.

    When Haymitch says “This mentoring is very taxing stuff” he was speaking nothing but the truth. He won his game during the 50th hunger games which means every year for 24 years he had to mentoring 2 tributes from District 12 and see them all die up until this game; 48 dead children and nothing he could do to save them.😔

    I'm not sure if you noticed, but when you see Cato choking Peeta and Katniss pointing an arrow at him, you will see a shot where Peeta is pointing at Cato's hand. This was to tell Katniss where to shoot, so that he would instinctively loosen his grip on Peeta, giving Peeta the opportunity to knock Cato down.

    • @shinigamis_like_apples4797
      @shinigamis_like_apples4797 7 месяцев назад +26

      In the books SC makes it even more obvious that Peeta was the planner of the two and scenes like that really demonstrated his skills as a strategist and just a good smooth talker. In that scene he even uses the blood from Catos wounds to make an X on his hand for her to shoot. Peeta in the books in general is a force of nature honestly.

    Katniss' feelings for Peeta are real, yep.
    She is grateful to him for how he helped her in the past, and to this is added her maternal and protective instinct towards the weakest, Peeta is wounded and vulnerable, in addition to being devoted to those who have affection towards her.
    Katniss only lies about being in love with him, but she does it to increase their chances of survival.
    And in any case it doesn't mean that she is totally lying, :)

    I've said this in the past, but it's always true: Donald Sutherland makes a really good villain as President Snow. It's the same paradox with Imelda Staunton/Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter: a delightful actor playing such a vile, despicable character. And I've said this a lot, too: Effie's wigs, makeup and wardrobe would make a drag queen jealous.

    😯 _Whaaat?_ Magy, a dystopia is an imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or _injustice;_ typically one that is _totalitarian_ or _post-apocalyptic._ A dystopian _story_ is a story set in a dystopian _society._ Their appeal is as old as the concept of the story _itself_ because it is such a rich source of _conflict._
    The alternative to a dystopia is a _utopia_ which is a place in which human society, natural conditions, etc, are so ideally perfect that there is complete _contentment._ There are _very_ few stories in settings like these because these are _terrible_ sources of conflict and you have to have a conflict to have a _story._

    Dystopian films: Logan’s Run, Divergent series, Battle Royale series, The Running Man, A Clockwork Orange, Mad Max series, Soylent Green, Total Recall. 28 Days Later. Resident Evil series. The Omega Man. I Am Legend. Gale became friends with Katniss because he also lost his father in the mine accident and was forced to take care of his family in a poor district. Haymitch also drinks too much since he played in the 50th Hunger Games where there were 2 male/2 female tributes chosen that year. Snow did not like how he survived so he killed his family/girlfriend which traumatized him further other than having to train tributes which would die each year from his district.

  • @Robert_Douglass
    @Robert_Douglass 7 месяцев назад +1

    Forced starvation was a tool of the Capitol in this story, to keep the Districts in line and prevent them getting the strength to rebel. A District member could gain an extra measure of wheat and oil if they submitted their name in the Reaping, and they could do it as many times as they wanted, which encouraged volunteers. The Peacekeepers in this film seem more administrative, but don't let the look fool you -- they are ruthless enforcers.
    Primrose Everdeen had the worst luck of anyone in Panem, guaranteed to be the first killed in the Games at only 12, which is why Katniss volunteered rather reflexively. Says something the odds, doesn't it?
    You may have noticed that Capitol residents have either Greek or Roman names, it's part of the culture of the Capitol. They're the aristocracy, the masters of Panem, and in the Districts are nothing but slaves.
    You have to read the novel, as it gives a far better perspective. Katniss's dress is encrusted with certain gems that catch light in just the right way to present the illusion of actual flames surrounding her if she spins herself around.
    So what happens next, after their victory? More Capitol control. Six months later, the Victory Tour. Katniss and Peeta spend weeks on a train touring the other eleven Districts, extolling the virtues and th generosity of the Capitol, before ending their tour in the Capitol itself. But trust me, they'll soend the rest of their lives on that train as Capitol darlings and another means of Capitol control. You'll understand what I mean later when you review Catching Fire.

    IMO Things like this are happening all over the place as distractions from working on the roots of the problems, greed, power, control,---

    If the purpose of the Hunger Games is for the tributes to kill each other, then the people operating the games should stay out of it. Don't create vicious animals to kill the tributes for you. That indirectly makes them murderers.

    There's 3 books in the series. Hollywood saw dollar signs & split the last book into 2 movies, almost ruining the franchise . What blew my mind was that these 3 books with all of this violence towards children were written by a woman. I enjoyed the books more than the movies. Keep reacting to more movies, thanks....

    You've made a very good point in the intro, Magy, about this genre of movie, how they've been really on the rise for a period of time and then fell off hard. Not just that but also, the "teen" element is quite prevalent too, with the potential love triangle, all the scheming and backstabbing, the naive ideals that teenagers have, which end up being crushed along the movie.
    Prim getting picked and Katniss choosing to volunteer in her place may not be the most unexpected plot twist ever but it does the job well enough. Peeta's reaction to being chosen is much more "realistic", all things considered.
    Haymitch offered them one hell of a crash course into the Hunger Games while on the train. It's really cool seeing how Peeta started working the crowd in his favour from the very start, while Katniss had a much harder time adapting to the politics and mindgames behind all of that.
    Cinna's a real one, supporting Katniss from the very start and the clothes he created for her were pure art, can't help but be in awe at such designs.
    Caesar puts on a fantastic show every single time he's on screen, whipping the crowd into a frenzy with little effort.
    Peeta's confession, revealing how he cares about Katniss, that was such perfect drama material, tragic lovers and what not.
    The start of the Game sequence, all those candidates eliminated by the others so fast - it's a big wake-up call for both the viewers and our two protagonists.
    If not for the game master and those neat little fireballs, Katniss would've probably easily outlasted everyone else. It did make for a good show, the unexpected difficulty. Meanwhile, Peeta decided to be much smarter about it all, choosing to join Cato's group.
    The sponsorship drops were nice touches, a little example of setting something up at the start of the movie and now it pays off.
    The moments between Katniss and Rue were really wholesome, showing us how good Katniss is as a big sister, but they also made the moment Rue died that much more heartbreaking.
    At times, it's getting really blurry, trying to figure out what exactly is real and what not between Katniss and Peeta - definitely leaning into the whole teen drama idea.
    "Truelulu" - excellent new word, Magy 😂
    "That's why you always have to do good" - you said it best and the movie offered the perfect example to support it.
    If the mutated bees weren't bad enough, the mutated dogs certainly did it. Terrifying creatures and the fact that they didn't kill Cato on the spot, torturing him, it made everything much worse but at the same time it offered Katniss the opportunity to show mercy and put herself even higher up the shitlist of President Snow by doing the humane thing and putting Cato out of his misery.
    Thank you for the epic reaction, it's been a lot of fun seeing you react to this first movie ❤

    The dog mutations at the end were a hella lot more terrifying in the books. They had been genetically altered to look like all the dead tributes right down to having weirdly human eyes
