Haymitch's attitude comes from being the only mentor in his district. He was the only one to advise the tributes, and so far they all ended up dead. So he finally resorted to drinking.
Yep and there's a lot of PTSD involved.
Yes but also his Mom, brother, & girlfriend were killed by Snow after he won the games
No, he started drinking after snow killed his whole family and gf
Plus his quarter quell being the first of 48 tributes so I don’t blame him
When Haymitch says “This mentoring is very taxing stuff” he was speaking nothing but the truth. He won his game during the 50th hunger games which means every year for 24 years he had to mentoring 2 tributes from District 12 and see them all die up until this game; 48 dead children and nothing he could do to save them.😔
Effie saying "That is MAHOGANY!" Will always be hilarious to me LMAO.
I'm not sure if you noticed, but when you see Cato choking Peeta and Katniss pointing an arrow at him, you will see a shot where Peeta is pointing at Cato's hand. This was to tell Katniss where to shoot, so that he would instinctively loosen his grip on Peeta, giving Peeta the opportunity to knock Cato down.
In the books SC makes it even more obvious that Peeta was the planner of the two and scenes like that really demonstrated his skills as a strategist and just a good smooth talker. In that scene he even uses the blood from Catos wounds to make an X on his hand for her to shoot. Peeta in the books in general is a force of nature honestly.
Yes, i remember. Cato got a very heavy Armor, so he didnt die to the dogs
In the book the dogs at the end have the eyes and faces of the "fallen" tributes, which makes them even more horrifying when you think about it.
*eyes and hair. Plus the number of their district on their collars
The girl who played Clove (the knive girl) is Isabelle Fuhrman, she played Esther in the psychological horror film "Orphan", and did a really good job at it.
She was also one of the finalists for Katniss. They were so impressed with her audition that they cast her as Clove. She was more menacing than Cato.
Omg how did I never notice that!? 😅
@@SurvivorBriagreed! One of my favourite actors in the first movie for sure
Fun Fact: Jennifer Lawrence’s stunt double is Renae Moneymaker. Her sister, Heidi, is Scarlett Johannson’s stunt double as Black Widow in the MCU.
The actress who plays Effie is Elizabeth Banks, who you’ve seen previously as Betty Brant, the secretary to J Jonah Jameson in the Tobey Spider-Man trilogy. 🕷️
I can't be bothered to find out what her name was, but the redhead girl from district 5 that ate the berries - is the one that earlier in the training room, was shown to be very good with identifying plants etc. katniss also says she's clever, and peeta says she's 'too clever'. So it's very likely she knew that they were poisonous, but ate them anyway:/
I don't think they ever give her name in the movie or the book. She is just referred to as Foxface.
@@seanhewitt-mallet7143 nickname then, something to call her. Couldn't bother to find it out^^
I think she ate them cuz she knew who was left and felt she didn't have a chance.
@@VeniKpop I think that is a movie-specific fan theory. In the books, I believe she exceeds at "memory tests," not anything specifically about foraging or survivalism.
It's not about identifying plants ,the test was matching symbols I think it's about reaction time and other things, but those were definitely not for identifying plants.
"It's the things we love most that destroy us." That gives me the chills and set up our new point of views. A quote we should always remember that.
The guy that plays Cato (Alex Ludwig), also plays the son of Ragnar Lothbrok in the HBO TV series Vikings. In it you see him playing a totally different personality and does an amazing job at it. This is a series you would love to watch and, wink, wink, nudge, nudge, something you could react to.
I watched this movie on theaters three times since its premiere. It has a great story, an excellent cast and the most beautiful soundtrack for a youth saga.
Katniss' feelings for Peeta are real, yep.
She is grateful to him for how he helped her in the past, and to this is added her maternal and protective instinct towards the weakest, Peeta is wounded and vulnerable, in addition to being devoted to those who have affection towards her.
Katniss only lies about being in love with him, but she does it to increase their chances of survival.
And in any case it doesn't mean that she is totally lying, :)
The newest film is a *prequel* to this one, taking place 64 years in the past, dealing with a young President Snow.
The man who started the riot in District 11 was Rue's father in the book.
In the books they don't mention Rue's father. Remember the books are written in Katniss' perspective.
Hey laura, Peter knows he doesn't have strong skills, strength or training to excel in The Hunger Games so he uses width and strategy to create the leverage in an edge in his favor.----- That's truly the basis of The Hunger Games create any advantage you can to survive.
You two are so cute, sitting there hugging your dolls. 😊
District 12 was the poor, dirty, unappreciated district with only one victory in decades. Then, suddenly, they get two superstar victors! Imagine the joy and the pride.
Two scenes always get to me: when Katniss volunteers, and the scenes after Rue gets trapped. 😢
I've said this in the past, but it's always true: Donald Sutherland makes a really good villain as President Snow. It's the same paradox with Imelda Staunton/Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter: a delightful actor playing such a vile, despicable character. And I've said this a lot, too: Effie's wigs, makeup and wardrobe would make a drag queen jealous.
Magy, Woody Harrelson who played Haymitch was in Zombieland, which you saw, and he’s also in Solo: A Star Wars Story. And the girl who played Rue will be in a new Star Wars series, The Acolyte. She’ll also be a voice in the third Miles Morales Spidey film: Beyond The Spider-Verse. 🕷️
You’ve seen a dystopian movie before - V For Vendetta. Another one that gets referenced alot in the culture is “1984”.
0:40 "It was a whole _vibe_ of movies, at one point, that was very _popular,_ and I think that it's called 'dystopian' movies, and I think they don't really make this type of movies, anymore."
😯 _Whaaat?_ Magy, a dystopia is an imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or _injustice;_ typically one that is _totalitarian_ or _post-apocalyptic._ A dystopian _story_ is a story set in a dystopian _society._ Their appeal is as old as the concept of the story _itself_ because it is such a rich source of _conflict._
The alternative to a dystopia is a _utopia_ which is a place in which human society, natural conditions, etc, are so ideally perfect that there is complete _contentment._ There are _very_ few stories in settings like these because these are _terrible_ sources of conflict and you have to have a conflict to have a _story._
“They deserve it” because they haven’t been friendly in a battle to the death 😂. By training n volunteering they stop random children from getting picked and they usually win so it helps their district or at least families even if it’s a little bit…being kind hearted knowing only one person can survive shouldn’t be so important.
Dystopian films: Logan’s Run, Divergent series, Battle Royale series, The Running Man, A Clockwork Orange, Mad Max series, Soylent Green, Total Recall. 28 Days Later. Resident Evil series. The Omega Man. I Am Legend. Gale became friends with Katniss because he also lost his father in the mine accident and was forced to take care of his family in a poor district. Haymitch also drinks too much since he played in the 50th Hunger Games where there were 2 male/2 female tributes chosen that year. Snow did not like how he survived so he killed his family/girlfriend which traumatized him further other than having to train tributes which would die each year from his district.
Suzanne Collins published the books through Scholastic Books to teach middle school students about politics and war. It was a followup series to The Underland Chronicles which approach the same subjects but for younger students.
It was very surprising when they were optioned for movies.
The actors when they played the roles were Josh Hutcherdon 18, Jennifer Lawrence 20 and Liam Hemsworth 21.
Josh who plays Peeta was the most experienced and had been acting since 10 years old.
Laura a new the death of Rue was going to break you since she and Katniss form such a cute sisterly bond during the movie. ---- I'm sure it reminded you of the sister bond you have with Vicki.
My friend now owns Clove’s (the girl with the knives) arena costume. 🗡️
The Hunger Games movies were near and dear to me because it was the first time I had read the books before I saw the movies. I read the first book in Middle School and didn't read afterwards becasue I was very aliterate when I was a pre-teen, but then I heard about the movie being released when I was in highschool and I quickly got my hands on the rest of the series and read them all. I begged my mom and brother to come and watch it with me and I loved being able to tell them all the similarities bewtween the book(s) and movie(s) : )
Magy, the role of Marvel was played by Jack Quaid. You saw his mother, Meg Ryan, as Goose’s wife in Top Gun.
Magy, you know Katniss as Mystique in the X-Men prequels.
You two clutching Miles & Gwen = ☺️☺️
*”May the odds be ever in your favor.”*
This is a typical propaganda phrase, kind of like "We're all in this together".
Hi Laura & Magy!😊 Great reactions to the original and well-acted Hunger Games, Ladies!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏
I love your "If not now then when" tattoo. The Chosen Gang :)
Once youve finished with the Hunger Games, you need to watch the _original_ "oppressive regime makes people fight to the death for entertainment" movie: The Running Man.
And then the _original_ original: Spartacus.
I agree with Running Man. That would make a good video. I'm not sure Spartacus would...
YES! The original Spartacus with Kirk Douglas is a really good film.
''They seem so real'' ohh trust me this is the best way to describe them hahaaha
I love your reaction!!!!! So cute!!! Thanks!!!! You love "Catching fire"!!!!
this is kind of a tiktok version of dystopian.
If you want to see a real dystopian film, I'd suggest:
Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) based on the George Orwell novel.
This is one way to get me to not want to watch a movie because I hate when people act pretentious, like just recommend the movie lol
I can't wait to see the new one. I do have my favorite movie from this original series, but I won't say which one. However, to me, it blows all the other ones out of the water!
"There are lots of underdogs. And I think that if you could see them, you would not root for them, either." ~ President Snow
Hey Laura, Tracy Chapman has a song based on your arm Tattoo. ----- You would love it. And her entire first album. ----- it speaks to young men and women common into adulthood.
Its been 10 years since I watched so I forgot. haha your face 16:50 🤣🤣
Hey Laura and Magy, i think you had both found your new favorite dress. The dress on fire. For the girls on fire.
People use to watch Gladiators fight to the death for entertainment. I’m sure you can find cultures across the globe that have had similar forms of entertainment throughout our history.
There's another one just been made and is on cinema now
Ladies, the actor who plays Gale is Liam Hemsworth, real-life brother to Chris Hemsworth, Thor himself. So Liam is the REAL Loki! 😉
Thank you for watching and your reactions.
Nice one, Ladies! Thanks for sharing it. 🙂
I literally started crying too and I’ve seen this too many times haha
Cool, I'm also watching all the films in the franchise in preparation for the 2023 film
The guy who played Cena, their costume designer for District 12, is rock star Lenny Kravitz, check out his song "Are You Gonna Go My Way?", if you feel like it, in case you haven't heard of it yet.
You guys should check out the movie The Road (2009)
Based on a Pulitzer Prize winning novel by American author Cormac McCarthy. In the years following a world-shattering apocalyptic event, a father and son travel on foot through the desolate charred remains of North America, struggling to survive on a quest to reach the ocean, with many hardships ahead of them in this dark ,dangerous ,dying world. Great Movie a must watch.
You both should watch La La Land if you haven't. It's an amazing movie. :)
Everyone plays the game but Peeta and haymitch play the capitol 😌😂
Forced starvation was a tool of the Capitol in this story, to keep the Districts in line and prevent them getting the strength to rebel. A District member could gain an extra measure of wheat and oil if they submitted their name in the Reaping, and they could do it as many times as they wanted, which encouraged volunteers. The Peacekeepers in this film seem more administrative, but don't let the look fool you -- they are ruthless enforcers.
Primrose Everdeen had the worst luck of anyone in Panem, guaranteed to be the first killed in the Games at only 12, which is why Katniss volunteered rather reflexively. Says something the odds, doesn't it?
You may have noticed that Capitol residents have either Greek or Roman names, it's part of the culture of the Capitol. They're the aristocracy, the masters of Panem, and in the Districts are nothing but slaves.
You have to read the novel, as it gives a far better perspective. Katniss's dress is encrusted with certain gems that catch light in just the right way to present the illusion of actual flames surrounding her if she spins herself around.
So what happens next, after their victory? More Capitol control. Six months later, the Victory Tour. Katniss and Peeta spend weeks on a train touring the other eleven Districts, extolling the virtues and th generosity of the Capitol, before ending their tour in the Capitol itself. But trust me, they'll soend the rest of their lives on that train as Capitol darlings and another means of Capitol control. You'll understand what I mean later when you review Catching Fire.
Oh nice reaction I hope you continue watching the Catching Fire and Mockingjay
Love how you guys don’t criticize much and are super positive
Another awesome reaction from you and Laura. I did rewatch the first one just recently because I haven’t seen it in years and it’s still a fantastic movie. I’m looking forward to The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Keep up the awesome reactions
These movies reminded me of Tomb Raider with Lara Croft. The HYPE was real, there's also books on them. Kant Miss Evershot lol. President Snow is evil and even I wanted him and this pathetic games shut down haha. Good role for Jennifer Lawrence. The Songbirds one is the newest, it's a prequel to Snow's presidency. Nice reaction. Have fun with this series. Have Laura watch Squid Games on here. Peeta!
Magy wants to volunteer for this game. 😂
It's good to see Laura in here. I love Vicky's reactions and I'm already loving her's.
i think the 2nd hunger games was the best one. watched that 3 times in the cinema wen it 1st came out
"Divergent" next ^^
we need the second movie reaction
Maze runner please
*The Girls On Fire* 🔥🔥
Venturing in to the dystopian world of the Hunger Games...
(2·22·35) [2012-MAR-23] THE HUNGER GAMES
(2·26·15) [2013-NOV-22] THE HUNGER GAMES : CATCHING FIRE
(2·02·50) [2014-NOV-21] THE HUNGER GAMES : MOCKINGJAY Part 1
(2·16·55) [2017-NOV-20] THE HUNGER GAMES : MOCKINGJAY Part 2
And of course, the new one, THE HUNGER GAMES : THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS & SNAKES, will be out soon...
33:06 This is one of those rare instances in which I read the book _before_ seeing the movie. As you can see, Peeta's disguise is pretty good, but you can still discern his face. In the _book,_ though, his camouflage was _flawless._ He closed his eyes and his mouth and _disappeared._
38:36 Now in the book, each of the muttations was based on one of the fallen tributes, but that was a nuance that could not survive the transition to the big screen.
As for the burning dress being possible or not, I’d have to say it’s not possible… yet.
If you like these type of movies watch the Mazerunner trilogy ^^
Movie suggestion - "The Bourne Identity".
Great video.
38:48
Number 2 soon? 😊
If not now then when. ( Hi Laura 👋🏿)
wowww good choices
The book series is amazing and the movies did a pretty good job of portraying the characters. They did leave out some stuff that I personally think should have been there, but the movies were still absolutely amazing.
The franchise consisted of four movies, but were based on only three books. Too much was happening in the last book, so it was decided to split that one into two Individual movies.
Nah... they didn't want the cash cow to die just yet, so they milked out another movie from it.
Honestly, all 3 movies could've been LotR's length, and still would've cut out a lot.
@@EpicToadRage At least the Hunger Games movies were woth watching.
If it sounds like I'm dissing LotR, that's because I am.
The movie was great but you guys are just brilliant! Make me smile everytime! ❤
This movie is silly.
@@Velanteg No you.
@@PKryik This movie makes no sense in you older than 12.
@@Velanteg Your comment makes no sense period.
@@PKryik You just an unreason fanboy.
What's up, Magnets!
IMO Things like this are happening all over the place as distractions from working on the roots of the problems, greed, power, control,---
Things like this cause uprising much faster than work or control.
Please watch the other Hunger Games movies
The role of Cinna was considered to be for *Prince* 💜
If the purpose of the Hunger Games is for the tributes to kill each other, then the people operating the games should stay out of it. Don't create vicious animals to kill the tributes for you. That indirectly makes them murderers.
♥
Divergent Maze Runner
i love the careers even if they were violent
Movie suggestion - "Scary Movie 2".
React to the second one
Ladies…please watch the Band of Brothers miniseries…
this will happen soon
There's 3 books in the series. Hollywood saw dollar signs & split the last book into 2 movies, almost ruining the franchise . What blew my mind was that these 3 books with all of this violence towards children were written by a woman. I enjoyed the books more than the movies. Keep reacting to more movies, thanks....
Love this amazing movie that pays proper tribute to the even more amazing book!
Rip rue
Does anyone know if they watched the amazing Spider-Man ???
Very great timing on this reaction since The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes releases today!
The left girl looks like charlotte from h2o! Omg
You resemble her so much wtf! Damn
Encore un bain de sang
You've made a very good point in the intro, Magy, about this genre of movie, how they've been really on the rise for a period of time and then fell off hard. Not just that but also, the "teen" element is quite prevalent too, with the potential love triangle, all the scheming and backstabbing, the naive ideals that teenagers have, which end up being crushed along the movie.
Prim getting picked and Katniss choosing to volunteer in her place may not be the most unexpected plot twist ever but it does the job well enough. Peeta's reaction to being chosen is much more "realistic", all things considered.
Haymitch offered them one hell of a crash course into the Hunger Games while on the train. It's really cool seeing how Peeta started working the crowd in his favour from the very start, while Katniss had a much harder time adapting to the politics and mindgames behind all of that.
Cinna's a real one, supporting Katniss from the very start and the clothes he created for her were pure art, can't help but be in awe at such designs.
Caesar puts on a fantastic show every single time he's on screen, whipping the crowd into a frenzy with little effort.
Peeta's confession, revealing how he cares about Katniss, that was such perfect drama material, tragic lovers and what not.
The start of the Game sequence, all those candidates eliminated by the others so fast - it's a big wake-up call for both the viewers and our two protagonists.
If not for the game master and those neat little fireballs, Katniss would've probably easily outlasted everyone else. It did make for a good show, the unexpected difficulty. Meanwhile, Peeta decided to be much smarter about it all, choosing to join Cato's group.
The sponsorship drops were nice touches, a little example of setting something up at the start of the movie and now it pays off.
The moments between Katniss and Rue were really wholesome, showing us how good Katniss is as a big sister, but they also made the moment Rue died that much more heartbreaking.
At times, it's getting really blurry, trying to figure out what exactly is real and what not between Katniss and Peeta - definitely leaning into the whole teen drama idea.
"Truelulu" - excellent new word, Magy 😂
"That's why you always have to do good" - you said it best and the movie offered the perfect example to support it.
If the mutated bees weren't bad enough, the mutated dogs certainly did it. Terrifying creatures and the fact that they didn't kill Cato on the spot, torturing him, it made everything much worse but at the same time it offered Katniss the opportunity to show mercy and put herself even higher up the shitlist of President Snow by doing the humane thing and putting Cato out of his misery.
Thank you for the epic reaction, it's been a lot of fun seeing you react to this first movie ❤
The girl with black hair looks like Kendall jenner
The dog mutations at the end were a hella lot more terrifying in the books. They had been genetically altered to look like all the dead tributes right down to having weirdly human eyes
