He was actually impressed with my acid drop. And the latest dream didn’t feature his South American boyfriend who he was with in another dream of mine 😂. I seldom dream but when I do it’s 50-50 if it features Ben or not 😂.
Its a good day, got off work a couple hours early, the sun is out, had a nice little curb session and now a skate topic video from Father Ben ? Man its all coming up roses today !
Shoutout gramma for letting you borrow her den. Pro tip for old cheap skaters pre apply shoe goo before skating your kicks, peel off after one or two sessions, reapply before the next one. Keeps the shoes fresh for the entire life of the shoe. Then the only way to tell if it’s time to switch them is when your feet are getting a bit sore or you can feel the sole has lost its cushion
Railside park… man it’s soooo smooth to ride now! I went and rode the bear creek park they redid. Amazing. Hopefully metrotown park gets a makeover too. Thanks for all video’s Ben.
Broke my ankle and got a pair of the Tiago 1010 new balances recently and they're an super comfy shoe. Might ride them when I come back. Tried to skate dunks and they weren't for me. Mostly skated Vans the last few years but thinking of switching to cup soles.
Ty so much for the honest review. I've been thinking of buying these for a while, and this video made me realize it's not for me. The fact that the panels are not glued together is a deal breaker for me.
In Christian Flores' review of the suede model he shows that the panels seemingly are glued together - after he blew the stitching the toe was still holding together. Maybe that's a difference between the leather and suede models?
The narrow arch is what kept me from skating it and the collar was not padded enough to keep the shoe snug on my feet. Other wise, I’d love that shoe for skating
YES the 480 Numeric is also my favorite skate shoe and I also lace it up all the way to the top eyelet. They are crazy comfortable and durable. The flat leather one like yours take a bit longer to break in than the tumbled leather and suede pairs I have (I think I have 6 in total). The black suede high tops have been the most durable/comfortable by far. Tied for second is the Reynolds tan suede/pebbled low with brown sole--also a looker. Most of them are lined with normal jersey material and those seem to slip less. I wear the 303 x Jeremy Fish 480s and the Natas 480 highs to work and those I had to get backup pairs too because I love how crazy they are. Edit: FYI I say this with some knowledge of shoe production: Nice shoes are glued along the edges where they meet other panels (even 750 dollar American boots). Also the type of leather used in nearly all 480s IS suede, finished with a thick plastic top coat layer. So leather is better because it's essentially protected suede, as long as you don't mind the look. Suede is more abrasion resistant but less structured than grain leather.
I love the insole in these. If I feel like a shoes is not giving me enough impact protection, I just add 480 insoles over existing insole and it just feels perfect.
I have to agree the durability on these are insane. I skated a pair of these for about 5 months before they were completely out of commission. They lasted through like 3 boards with Mob grip.
Skating a pair of suede 440s rn. Blew through 2 of the 3 toe cap layers and nearly ripped the whole N off in about a month. BUT, zero break in time, and they are still hanging in there and skating well after another month, even with a very worn out sole
Oooh Adriano, it’s been a hot minute! Tell him we miss him! I’ve been holding off on the New Balances. They generally look all too ’dad’ for me and the ones that don’t I worry they might not be comfortable at all.
For those who find them too narrow in the arc, cutting the arc part of the insole worked for me. You can also put in thicker insoles but then you sit too high up in the shoe.
Haven’t even finished the video yet but the 480 has been my favorite skate shoe yet! I just put a different insole In or cut a little bit of the arch off the insole it comes with and it makes them feel much more roomy in the mid section.
😣 I just got done watching Tim Pool argue about politics on Piers Morgan Uncensored for a hour I definitely feel a lot dumber now:( I am so happy Ben Degros posted to get my mind off whatever Tim Pool was yapping about
I had the same problem with the stitches letting go on the toe box after my second session (a lot smaller) but still - I put super glue underneath and on the stitching to hopefully prevent it from ripping more.
Ive been solely skating NB the last 3 years. Their durability is exceptionally good. 272 and 440s are my go-to, because 600 has that runner shoe feel, because of drop (taller in the heel), and 480s sits too tall like you mention.
These remind me of the mid cons all star, I don’t think that’s the exact name. But your review is essentially identical as how I feel about these cons. I’m a huge fan. And I’m really considering NB for the future. Also a 37 year old washed up dad so they may just be dad-ish shoes. For 2 meniscus tears you’re killing it on the board. Must’ve taken PT seriously. Also funny how being healthy and taking care of your body yields results…shoutouts to us old guys still getting clips.
1:31 I had the same experience with the 1010, as you‘ve written here - turns out they actually are longer on the inside compared to other NBs like 440, 808, 272. Eventhough they were the same size. So you have to size down on the 1010. Thx for the 480 review Ben✌🏻
I love suede cup sole New Balances. Been skating various models of them for a couple years now. The suede ones seem to break in after like 2 sessions, granted I usually skate for 3 to 4 hours a session. Even out of the box they feel pretty flexible.
I agree about staying with stock insoles, I strongly dislike how aftermarket insoles are marketed in skateboarding (looking at you FP). Cool skate clips, and the shoes look pretty nice as well - I always skate Fallen just because I'm clinging onto that old brand and image as one of the old core shoes, but as far as the "corpo" brands go NB looks the most interesting to me. Thanks for the upload!
if you prefer narrower NB shoes I'd recommend you try the 600. I have a wider foot and felt like the 600 was way too narrow for me. The 1010 is my favorite skate shoe at the moment, it's a bit wider
Yup. 1010 is too wide for me. I don’t usually like the way the 600 looks. There’s something a little off or disproportionate in the design. Can’t totally pinpoint it but I often don’t like the way it looks in some colours.
Super relatable man. I had the same experience with New Balance until recently trying the 440v2 Highs. The high tops make me feel like a real old head but man they are so good. Appreciate the video and curious about what you think of the v8’s. I’ve been on them for a week now and I love them so far.
I've done reviews on this one, the Tiago 808 and the Tom Knox 600 since I'm old, a dad, have feet that hurt and they all have the fuel cell midcill foam in them. The 480 is the middle of the road as far as width goes. If you like a narrower shoe, you really ought to try the 808 as long as you can be patient with the break-in period. It's built like a tank but after skating it for a few sessions, it starts to feel amazing.
shoemadness is real i've had a really bad case the past two years as well I ordered and spent so much on shoes , cant have to much boardfeel and prefer cupsole on the thicker side , I was skating accel ogs for a good while great shoe for me but wanted to try something more modern , so I tried the tiago 808 in the suede brown , hands down best shoe for me I wish I would've gave it a shot earlier now , Im about to order 2 more pairs tomorrow actually to keep it in stock here , but the tiagos really are incredible if you re more a chunky shoe skater like myself they break in so nice the level of comfort on these is amazing its like putting my foot into a snug cushion of memory foam they protect your feet from board impacts well .
The suede model slips off your heels like crazy because the liner around the heel area is some kind of slippery mesh. If you liked these I think you’ll like the 440 v2. Probably the best cupsole I’ve skated out of all of the modern shoes.
The lack of glue is insane. I skated a few pairs of suede 440H and eventually realized I didn't like how floppy they started feeling after 2-3 weeks. The sizing also wasn't totally consistent between pairs. The width was a plus for me, though
Sizing was enough to make me not buy another 440. Had a 10.5 that fit great so I got the black color way in 10.5. Things were a whole size smaller then my first pair in the same size, I couldn’t even walk around in them.
As someone with wide feet, I love NB fits compared to Nikes and Adidas. It's like that scene in Die Hard. I don't have dainty, tiny feet and I feel seen.
I have 2 sessions on mine. I like em a lot but I thought I could have maybe gone down a half size. I should add mine are suede so I expect them to stretch a bit
Impressive that a fellow old guy just run stock insoles. I’m deep into that game since, well, forever. I have the 1010 and I’m curious if the heel on these al lower? Do you risk getting too high up and slip out with a footprint insole?
I got the no stitch, all suede brown one 480s and it formed a hole in 2 days from ollies. I moved up to 8.25 so I wasn't doing any flip tricks them days. I was pretty disappointed with them. They do have great board feel tho. I put some shoe goo on them so I'm still skating them for now
@bendegros I normally work through the stitching so the extra layer disconnects. This was a first for me. Haha maybe I've changed the way I ollie haha 🤷♂️
They are definitely not wide/tall foot friendly. The length is fine, but the pinching at the big toe MTP joint and midfoot is very uncomfortable. Surprisingly heavy, too.
I recently got these shoes as well. It will be a while before I skate them. I’ve been skating the ASICS Japan Pro for a while now and they are an extremely well built shoe and Dunk rival
