This was great!! Brought back a lot of memories since I'm half Portuguese (my father was from Madeira) and have eaten these foods all my life just not recently. I love going to grocery/liquor stores in other countries - always some interesting finds. I hope to visit Portugal very soon :)

Just back from Albuferia,it was so busy because it was peak season and too hot to walk around during the day for me, but the only time I can take holidays as I work in the education sector. We found Ubers fantastic though, we don’t have them in Ireland. Took up some of your advice and went to the Pingo Doce supermarket restaurant a couple of times which was so reasonable. Bought the JP red wine and had to buy a flipper for our eggs and pancakes too in continente. We only had tiny cups in our apartment so had to buy a decent sized mug too, but brought our own teabags “Barry’s Gold blend” which in the opinion of the whole Irish nation are the best in the world and we all pack them going on holidays. Thanks for all your hints and tips, they were very helpful plus I had an idea of the layout of the area too.

I always do a big shop in Continente and am glad to purchase umpteen kitchen utensils that I love to use at home and always use sea salt as its so cheap there. Thanks Norm and Tina for these tips. We were in Tavira in early/mid November 2021 and made several grocery store trips. Wish I knew about the Pastel de Nada’s on Friday eve. I bought two wonderful cheap wines as well. Don’t recall if they were J+P so now I’m kicking myself for not taking a picture of the label. On our next rip, we’ll try Super Bock Stout and Beirao liquor. Thumbs up for Galao coffee. 👍🏻 Cheers.

Thanks again for the tips. Oh dear I was about to go out for frozen mushrooms. I used to buy my Portuguese custard tarts warm in the bakery in Cardiff. Have seen them here. As much as we want to go back and visit Europe (hubby is homesick) we are probably going to drive south first. Enjoy weekend. 🥂🍺

Tea comes from "Transporte de Ervas Aromáticas (T.E.A)" (translates to: Transportation of Aromatic Herbs), when the Portuguese first introduced it to the English. Thats your cool fact for today :)

We moved to Portugal in August and we always buy a cheap wine around the 1-2€ mark to see if any of them are any good, we have had some nice wines and some not so nice. We are off to Lidl this morning to buy the JP wine and the Beirao liquor to try. Have a great weekend both.

Hi Norm and Tina, we are in Madeira at the moment and we just bought the JP wines and have just tried the JP red. It's lovely. Thanks so much for the recommendation. We are staying at the Vidamar in Funchal for 10 days and from the UK. It's our third stay at Vidamar and would recommend it. We like the Vidamar resort near to Albifura mainland Portugal (salgados beach). It's a little away from the town but there is no need for car hire, because you can buy 3 day passes for the hop on hop of city sightseeing bus cheaply and use that for all your transport. Thanks so much for your channel we love it and always watch!
We are glad you enjoyed JP there are other many many great Portuguese wines to try but we can get JP in Canada and it reminds us of Portugal. Portugal just put Canada on a list that means we can’t travel there at the moment.
@@ThisIsOurRetirement We hope you get there soon. We managed to avoid Coronavirus restrictions since they all seem to be ending in the UK. Some would say prematurely. We had booked a long time ago so had to go or loose the holiday. We took off on Friday in the worst storm (Eunice) for over a decade. Even the gusts upto 100mph didn't seem to stop us, the airline (Jet2) just moved the flight till later when it had died down a little, but it was still a bumpy take off. We wish you well and hope you get to Portugal soon. The winter is amazing here. We love Madeira and equally mainland Portugal. The Portuguese are so friendly and welcoming to us. The standard of living is so much higher than the UK which is getting awful, especially now post Coronavirus, all the taxes are going up and extra levies and stealth taxes. Roll on retirement - probably in Portugal :)

I was surprised that the air b n b we stayed at in UK didn't have a teapot. I bought a plain white one n left it behind. We had picked up bread , peanut butter, n jam n tea on the way from the airport.

Also you mentioned you have children in one of your videos. Do they live near you and are they married? Any grandchildren? We got our first granddaughter in December, (so exciting) but because of Covid haven’t seen her in person yet, but so enjoying FaceTime. With her. 😁 we live in NH and our daughter with new grandchild lives in Chicago. Our son and his wife live in Las Vegas. So we are so grateful that there is FaceTime, because it feels like you said, your in the same room. Sometimes we are on for hours, laughing and talking with them both at the same time. 🥰
We have been married for 47 years childhood sweethearts and best friends, we have a son and daughter and grandchildren. Yes Facetime is wonderful we haven’t seen our daughter and Grandson since the pandemic started , we do see our son as he is close . Wow! $3 wine would be considered dangerous in Canada. Nice thing about Europe though. It's good, better, best. Not a lot of bad wine. You can drive around rural France and stop in little cafes for lunch and get the best wine you've ever tasted for a pittance.

You can find frozen mushrooms in Canada. Try an Italian store. Here in Calgary at the Italian Market there are several kinds.
We were just told by a viewer that M&M has a bag of frozen ones, unfortunately we do not have an Italian store close by. Thanks for the suggestion.
Loved the green lighting 🎄 as backdrop. The variation shots in the video add to the enjoyment of watching and listening. Pick of the bunch: Pasta de Nata. I have made them a couple of times now. They are tricky and the taste is almost the same- I just missed the Portugal ingredient. Try a Latte with Baileys. Very dangerous. Very More-ish. When traveling across the border I use Google translate in the supermarkets. We have a Turkish local supermarker. Google is invaluable there 😂! Fortunately we had two rooms identical in size we converted to ‘caves’. So much freedom 🎶💃 - 🕺🏻✍️. Nothing like a taste of Portugal in due course. Just went for a brisk and wettisch 4km walk. Temperature not bad at all, 9 degrees. Now it’s time for feet up and a movie. Snuggle up and keep warm. 🍷🎄🇳🇱🎄🇳🇿

Years ago in Portugal I would always have stuffed tomatoes or capsicum or egg plant at the non tourist cafe,
with a dressing of fresh olive oil they were delicious. Do the supermarkets still have bring your own bottle
wines which can be filled from barrels which are kept on the floor.
Sound delicious food, no the supermarkets that we use don’t have bring your own bottles. We used to bring our own containers to a wine cooperative in the South of France years ago. Thanks for watching 🍷
Licor Beirão is like an angel crying on your tongue. Poured over ice is best as a nightcap. We have a place in Lagos and despite the fact that we took the car last summer, I forgot to bring a bottle home! doh!

@@ThisIsOurRetirement this video inspired me to Google where the nearest Portuguese shop was and not only did I find a couple of online ones that will deliver within the UK but there is a little shop in Cardiff. I’m very tempted to pay it a visit! I’m dreaming of Ginha or Beirão at Christmas time. I’ll have to see how this Omicron goes over the next few days or I won’t be able to justify the commute on public transport.

Hi Tina and Norm. We've watched your videos for some time and they are so helpful. Thank you! We currently have a one week trip booked to Terceira and with the recent travel advisory, we're considering what our options are.
We are local in Southern Ontario. Are you ever available for a phone call? One thought we're having is to go on the one week trip but if restrictions are imposed in Canada and we'd need to quarantine on return, then we stay on Terceira and travel around the islands for a few more weeks. We are triple vaxed. We're wondering what your thoughts are on that strategy. Please let me know if there's someway to connect. Thank you!
We are not planning to travel this winter , due to the recent travel advisory to not travel and the new Omicron 🦠variant we are staying home . If you visit Terceira , on return you need to have a negative test , staying on in the Islands doesn’t change that with regard to quarantining back in Canada 🇨🇦 We are also triple vaccinated 💉🦠but not prepared to risk not getting back home to Canada 🇨🇦.Cheers 🍷🇵🇹🍺🇨🇦
