The Fyrd deck is reshuffled once it runs out of cards, right? Otherwise, the game balance starts to favor the vikings. I've read something about that in the BoardGameGeek forums. All in all, a great review as always! :)
Oh that's interesting, I thought that they were a limited resource. In that case, there's really no reason to ever NOT play a Fyrd card, correct? Free help?
Great video again Rodney! Whenever I want to learn how to play a game, your videos are the first that I search for and watch. Nobody does it better! Thank you again for such high quality, well-explained, detailed instructions.
I love the consistency in your videos, I know that by the end I will know how to play, but more importantly I will know if I will like it or not. I love that you don't rate them or let your personal preferences influence your explanations. Please do a "Leaving Earth" How To Play!
Oh wow! I just stumbled upon this game today in someone's "Gencon waiting list" and Rodney already got a video! You, sir, are simply amazing. Thanks a lot for all great work you are doing with those videos - keep it up!
Rodney does some really incredible work, I'm amazed at how friendly and professional this video is. Will we be seeing you at Gen Con this year, Konstantin? We will be running loads of "878 Vikings" events, and we were fortunate enough to be able to arrange for some copies of the game to be shipped to us ahead of schedule for sale in our booth (2921). -Aiden
Awesome video Rodney! Hopefully I will get to play my copy tonight. One thing I did notice reading the BGG forums is that the Fyrd cards are reshuffled when the deck runs out, they don't go back into the box.
Yep, they sure are! When making the video I was given a different answer, but we've added this correction to the description of the video. Thanks for keeping an eye out!
When it comes to tutorials - you are the go-to source. I have a question, at 11.35 to say "before, during or after a leaders movement it may freely drop off or pick up units from either of its factions. However, on rulebook page 6, right hand column, first black ink paragraph, line 4 it reads "Armies cannot drop off or pick up units while moving". This seems a direct conflict, can you explain please.
Hi Stewart, thanks for the kind words about the video. Please see Page 9 of the rule book, 51. Leader Movement, you'll find the answers there (in the section of the video you refer to at 11:35 I'm showing Leader Movement, which has unique properties).
I have a couple of clarification questions 1) If the vikings have attacked more than one english city in a turn do the english get the fyrd for all the cities under attack? Do they apply one fyrd card to all, draw different cards for the different cities or do they only get one and have to choose which city gets them? 2) I am not sure I totally understand the leader movement distinction (outside of an initial invading viking). If I play a card that allows 2 armies to move am I forced to move a leader(s)if I have one or more on the board or can I opt to forego moving leaders and apply my 2 movements to leaderless armies on the board?
I usually do my best to answer all rules questions, but I shot this long enough ago that I don't have the answers in my memory and I lent my copy to a friend so I can't easily look up the answers for you. Sorry I couldn't be more useful.
Curious if you still play this game,? I bet your son likes playing the Vikings! I’m playing it today and needed your video, this is the second game Ive played (solo only so far). First game English won by a hair. Thanks Rodney.love your videos
So glad you're enjoying the videos :) I don't often comment on how often I'm still playing games I've featured as people might assume that has something to do with how much I like the game - but my work schedule keeps me from being able to play many games I really enjoy, so that is not a good measure.
Watch It Played . Understood! I would never assume thar because Im in the same situation. However, my work hours have been cut back for a while, so Im getting out some older titles I havnt played in a while and getting as much game time in as possible!
Hi Rodney Great Video as always! I have 2 questions. At 7:33 during the reinforcement face, if you run out of units you mention valid options. What does this means, what are the valid options? Also if your deck runs out you reshuffle?
I appreciate that! The valid options I'm referring to are the cities. So instead of reinforcing all cities, as mentioned at 6:56, you'd choose which valid cities showing your color that you wish to reinforce until your units run out. If your Faction deck runs out of cards, you do not reshuffle.
Concerning a multiple round battle involving a leader. Every round you fight cost a shire move. See also P9 of the rulebook, it's not really clear, but the exemple in red talk about it. 17:00 of Rodney video: I am not sure what's happen if the enemy still survive and no more shire move left ? Somebody have the answer ? I supposed the combat is stopped and leader must retreat in the shire he came from ? Congrats for that great video Rodney !
Let's say I have 1 movement left, and I go into a new space and start a fight, but that fight takes 2 rounds to complete, you lose another movement point, BUT that just means you have 0 movement (Although you technically have -1 movement, you don't have to retreat or anything). The main point of this rule, is that it can spend up leftover movement that you might have, but you never go below 0.
I missed the rule on leader movements; ie if the battle took 3 rounds I removed 2 turn markers; however it seems its only costing one regardless of the length of the battle above the first round. Thanks Rodney!
Yes, that's right, if your combat goes 4 rounds, it only costs 2 moves (1 to enter the space initially, and then 1 extra for going more than one round of combat). Glad the video could help.

My best three games (878, 1754, 1775) ! It allows for so many interesting situations. Yet it's not too long and it has low down time.
Hi Rodney, amazing job as usual! I have a question: I know that you want to keep it professional and not giving personal opinion about the game in the video, but what do you think of it? Have you played it with friends? I ask that because my favorite game is Kemet and I know it's also yours, so maybe we have almost the same taste for games (I really dig area control games with tons of tiny minis), and I have bought this one (ship on its way). Do you think it's Fun? Balanced? Various? Don't worry to be brutal if necessary I just want an honest opinion XD Keep up the good work!
+Marco Boschini Hey Marco, it's not really a matter of being professional, so much as a personal preference. I just don't particularly enjoy trying to assess for someone else what they may or may not like. I really just prefer to show how the game works, so that you can hopefully judge for yourself whether or not the game would be good for you and your particular interests. Thanks for the interest in my thoughts though :)
My channel is a little different, as I don't rate or review games here. I talk a bit about my feelings around that here: ruclips.net/video/p0Lv8LHadMc/видео.html&t=10m55s
+PanzerRanger It went out of print, so unfortunately I won't be covering it. I regret mentioning a video was coming for it as early as I did. I've learned my lesson. No announcements until the video is in progress from now on!
This is an extremely enjoyable game to play. However, in the twenty games I have played with my son, the Vikings have won every single time. They lose a lot of figures taking key shires and are then simply overwhelmed by the English reinforcements. I have read the rules several times and watched all the RUclips reviews; so I know we are playing the game correctly. What on earth do the Vikings have to do to win? Edwin
Well Edwin, we can tell you how to play, but we can't tell you how to play well :) I'll have to leave the strategy advice to someone else! You might get some good tips by checking the page for the game over at BoardGameGeek though: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/204516/878-vikings-invasions-england
Edwin Herbert you’ve got to park your forces on reinforcement cities as the Viking players first and foremost. Afterward snapping up as many as your leader can, park and let the English come to you. The game favors defense! Also events like Ceowulf and feigned retreat can help you take cities without too many casualties. I think it is important to preserve your leaders. Their mobility and ability to drop off troops is key, so I think you have to be careful not to spread them too thin
Important note: you only remove a berserker unit in the FIRST English battle dice roll if they score a hit. So, if the English miss and score a hit on a future roll, you're not obligated to remove the berserker first.
Yep, the first causality of a battle must be a Bezerker (if present), but only the first. Any future casualties can be assigned to any unit. I do feel this is somewhat emphasized during the video from 13:54 - 14:28, but always good to have additional reminders!
Always cracks me up when the rules say to place the board "in the middle of the table." What if I can only place it slightly to the right or left? Can I NOT play it??? ;-)
And how about the first round, the english put 4 units each and after the vikings finish their turn I draw english(blue) should I place reinforcements in the shires or should I wait for the second round?
LOL - I think you will really like talking to Ingrid and the girls... you will need to bring protection though. Preferably chain mail and a good shield.
The Fyrd deck is reshuffled once it runs out of cards, right? Otherwise, the game balance starts to favor the vikings. I've read something about that in the BoardGameGeek forums. All in all, a great review as always! :)
You're right Dragomir! The game designers have confirmed that the deck is reshuffled if it runs out. And I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Oh that's interesting, I thought that they were a limited resource. In that case, there's really no reason to ever NOT play a Fyrd card, correct? Free help?
Tyler DeLisle i agree
Also ... at least my version of the rules state that the English player "must" draw one Fyrd card if in a city shire.
@@WatchItPlayed I'm glad I read the comments! Also. Thanks for the great videos WIP!
Great video again Rodney! Whenever I want to learn how to play a game, your videos are the first that I search for and watch. Nobody does it better! Thank you again for such high quality, well-explained, detailed instructions.
+Doug Birdwise Thank you very much for the kind comments Doug!
thanks Rodney, these videos are always a huge help and are easier to digest than the occasionally arcane and ambiguous rulebooks.
Very nice to know you've found them helpful!
Awesome to see some Academy Games done by Rodney & Pep! As always a solid job sir.
Thank you Marlon!

Unfortunately no, I won't be coming to Gen Con. I live in Europe and flying over for this event is still a bit too expensive for me)
Playing this today for the first time. This was helpful. Thank you.
You're very welcome - have fun!
Looking forward to see someone cover all the expansion material in a video ...

Wow, sorry for not checking the description. I should be me more aware. Thanks for the video!
No worries, an easy thing to miss!
Hey, my english is not the best, but your teaching (oO my english^^) i understand whithout any problems. very very great. Thank you for your work!!!

+Ray Myers Thank you Ray, fingers crossed it's very soon!
I just got mine today in Ohio!
Ray Myers and
I know people say it a lot but these videos are great!
+DarthMessias That means a lot, thank you Darth.
now that's how you explain a board game, unlike some other channels
Very glad you liked it ShogunV - hope you enjoy playing, and feel free to check out some of our other tutorials. Cheers!

Have you tried 1754 yet?
Will you do "How To Play" for the 878 Vikings Expansion too?
And are there any updated rules?
No plans for the expansions. I don't tend to cover expansions (so many games, so little time!).
Great explanation, as always!
Thank you kindly!

Ok that's sounds right. Well, you explained it well (the game) and it looks actually good. I can't wait to try it myself :D
Excellent walk through. Thank you!

+PanzerRanger It went out of print, so unfortunately I won't be covering it. I regret mentioning a video was coming for it as early as I did. I've learned my lesson. No announcements until the video is in progress from now on!
That seems a weirdly specific number of Vikings.
Ha!
Great...Can I view a game playthrough somewhere?
I'm not sure Frank, I'm guessing someone has perhaps done one?
This video was quite well done!
Thank you Willie!

Always cracks me up when the rules say to place the board "in the middle of the table." What if I can only place it slightly to the right or left? Can I NOT play it??? ;-)
You cannot. If it's not in exactly the middle, you must pack it up and put it away! ;)
And how about the first round, the english put 4 units each and after the vikings finish their turn I draw english(blue) should I place reinforcements in the shires or should I wait for the second round?
English units place reinforcements right away, only the first round viking unit doesn't (as their reinforcements were placed during the setup).
Thanks for the fast response.
You should do a review of Vikingar.
We don't usually pre-announce our videos, so I can't say for sure if that's one we would cover on the channel. Thank you for the interest though!
as always - perfect video :)
Thank you kindly!
I was in Essen, didnt know you are coming there as well. Missed the small chat with you sadly...better luck next time. Keep up the great job
If I call 878-VIKINGS, who will answer?
LOL - I think you will really like talking to Ingrid and the girls... you will need to bring protection though. Preferably chain mail and a good shield.
be careful the shield maidens are fierce, but you may end up riding off with the beautiful Valkyries if you fight bravely an ddie in battle.
+Patrick Towey Okay, that was funny :)
Alfred the great
Sounds like a complicated but good game
Thanks for checking out the video Kein!
Looks great
+l0n3wolf89 Thanks for checking it out!
You are amazing
Glad you liked the video Reuel!
excellent
Thanks for checking out the video!
