Will be playing this soon with my family, and it is usually up to me to learn the rules to new board games we get. The manual left me with a few questions, and this cleared them up. Thank you very much! Also, that intro spin box move was pretty epic!
Yeah I'm exactly at the same situation XD and it doesn't make it better that the instructions is only on English since I'm not so good at it so it really helps with someone showing and giving examples ;D I appreciate it man ❤
My partner has experienced too many concussions and learning new things is always a challenge at best. We were looking for something we can do together that challenges me but not lose her. Decided on a new game. After watching this she wanted to try Everdell. You sold her on it. 1st try at play through got through spring before she stared to shut off. She asked to re-watch you explain it and is excited to try again. We may not play for points for a few rounds but can see how this is going to help her and give us more time together. Thank you for being so engaging and explaining very well.
Love this comment. Gives me some hope that I can learn this game. I also have a long history of concussions due to years of football. I think I’ll buy this one now. Thanks!
So confused. I tried playing but from these instructions you can't use a worker again until you move to the next season?? And you only start with two workers? So this means in my fist season I got some wood and one berry- I can't do anything with that so I had to move to the next season. Now I got a gem and a rock. I got to play one graveyard. Now I'm in the next season. Four workers, tons of cards I can't play... I'm so confused.
@@Daxdax006you should be able to use a combination of card actions and worker actions to get a kinda engine going, so look at your cards at see if any combine to give you a benefit, then only collect materials if you need them, you will find spring quite short, by the time you get to autumn it will be much longer as you will hopefully have a lot of resources and cards down so you can do a lot of stuff without needing workers.
@jktejik I had the same question and it's why I put the game away after trying to play twice. You can only play workers once in a season? There's just no way to play a card in spring. We shuffled twice, got frustrated, confused, and called it a day. Are there certain cards you're supposed to start with or did the luck of the draw leave us high and dry?
@tcelikel you can get a giant box that has all of the Everdell content OR you can get a giant empty box and then you put in the content you already own. They have a few different ways to do it. I don’t own any of it yet so I’m going for the box that contains all the stuff!
Your tutorials teach how to play games so that people can slow down from the rush and often isolation of modern life and get to know each other, bond, and laugh around a table together. We love that.
Rodney is without a doubt the best board game teacher out there. Whenever I get a game and I see he has a “how to play” video for it, I know I’m going to be a-OK. Thanks!
I love how every board game feels absolutely wild when you first start to learn but then by the end it's like nothing else could ever make any more sense. My group is playing this for the first time tonight and I'm very excited I can easily teach and guide the game and my friends. Thanks for such a clear and concise break down!
An absolute treasure, the Bob Ross/Carl Sagan/Mr Rogers of boardgames. I can happily spend an evening just learning games even if I'm not about to play them, and when I am trying to play something, the videos are invaluable. I hope your life is filled with as much joy as you bring to others, cheers man
Thanks once again Rodney! Whenever we get a new game our first step is seeing if youve created a video for it. You have done so much to make this hobby accessable to folks new to it, and take a weight off the shoulders of those of us who like to play but struggle to teach effectively.
I was reading the instructions to this game and got confused so I searched youtube and found your channel. So glad I did! You explain the rules so clearly and it made more sense to me than just reading the manual. Thank you and I’m looking forward to learning more games from you in the future :)
I love how clear you are when explaining how to play games. It makes me really want to pick up new games all the time, and I feel like I have a general idea of how the game works and what it focuses on thanks to your explanations.
Games on my shelf unplayed, games just bought. It matters not, this is the first site I check now when I'm ready for a whirl, and this "how to" made me laugh! Great work.
Thank you so much. Due to an injury I don't understand written instructions as well anymore. I got this game as a gift and have been excited to play, but quickly got overwhelmed. Thank you for explaining and showing clearly. Will likely have to watch a couple more times, but excited to play now! Look forward to watching other videos you have!
My ABSOLUTE favourite game!! All their expansions just arrived and they're so so amazing!!! I love the theme and the art and it all comes together in a beautiful game. I love it
Simon McAdam without a doubt spirecrest has elevated the game to a new level and given it an ‘adventure’ element I never knew I wanted. I do not see myself playing without Spirecrest, excluding tutorial games, ever again.
THANK YOU. That was the Best Everdell How to Play that we saw. We opened Everdell tonight with an aim to play. The other videos we saw were very confusing. This cleared things up very nicely.
We read the rules but this video helped secure answers to a couple of questions. We just had our first game of this ever and we loved it. So glad I bought it for her for Christmas. Thank you to the video as well as you did a great job explaining things. Very clear, very thorough and yet pretty concise all things considered.
As always excellent, whenever our group is playing new games this is one of the first thing we do before getting together. Watching watch it played! So when we meet we can hit the ground running! It’s truly cut down on rules explaining and and questions! So a big thanks from Sweden. With love. Xo
After watching, enjoying your content off and on for years just a quick thank you and genuine appreciation for all the assistance you have provided me and my family.
No offense to all the other amazing contributors to the channel, but Rodney, you have my heart when it comes to tutorials. Excellent structure, timing, presentation, and just the right amount of detail in context. Always enjoy your overviews thoroughly. Ordered this today because I've been thinking about it for a while; then I saw it on DT's top ten solo games list with Liz, Zee, and Mike and realized I could enjoy this just as much solo. Awesome job, can't wait to get playing this beautiful game!!
just wanted to say a massive thank you, your our go to channel when first learning a game as you make it so easy to understand what to do and we never get confused, amazing content and this video just made us buy a copy of everdell the complete collection lol
When our son taught us to play Wingspan, I was sure I'd never get it. And now it would be embarrassing to say how much we play it. Af first watch, Everdell looks like a huge learning curve, but looking forward to easing into it and discovering a new game. Thank you for this great intro.
Incredibly clear in explaining how to play the game. Loved the flow of the video and how thorough you were without it being an overload. Definitely one of the best if not the best learn to play videos I’ve watched. Thank you
me and my husband played this today...works great as two player...it’s great looking and the gameplay is so much fun...probably our new favourite game. Thanks for the video we always enjoy them
Rodney, every time I get a new game I cross my fingers hoping you've made a video about it. It really never fails, I always understand it after watching you teach it. Kudos to you my good man. One heck of a teacher. 😊
So happy to see a proper video tutorial out for this game and very happy it was you doing it Rodney. Everdell is such an amazing title, it’s flow of gameplay is very tight and makes for a nice blend of euro and American design that I think many others fail to properly capture.
For WHATEVER reason, we thought the mouse was a rabbit for the longest time! Now we call it the mabbit. We have the Pearlbrook expansion and the card expansions. The art is totally amazing, the cards are so much fun!!! This gets a lot of play time, my daughter loves it. My wife and daughter love the feel of the berries. We absolutely love the game, and it ranks right up there in the top of our collection!!!!!! Great job on the video. I love the blueberry substitute.
I tried watching a play through on a couple of other channels before coming across your channel. Thanks for being so clear and concise. I actually enjoyed watching your video!
Just got my copy of Everdell today and am already so excited to try it! Figured I'd have a look at some video explanations of the game on top of the rule book and you made it all so easy to understand; count me among your subscribers from now on, your passion and genuine excitement for each boardgame and their elements really shines through and makes it easy to understand. Keep up the awesome work, can't wait to see what other games you review!
So glad the Dutch version finally was released. Although playing games in English is not so much harder than playing in your mother language, I think playing the game now has more depth due to the comprehension when reading the cards. ( I hope I wrote this correct) Anyway, nice videos to watch and always a pleasure to see how much joy you bring extra to the game. Greetings from Bruges, Belgium
It’s been a while since I’ve been able to watch this channel due to really crazy and horrible personal life stuff (but no worries! Things are going SO well now!) and it’s so heart warming to see that my favorite board game channel is still going! Thank you so much for making these videos, been a fan since 2015 at least and you helped me find some wonderful games and I always appreciated your suggestions. Was curious about this one and was so glad to see you had a video on it! Anyways, just wanted to say a big thank you for helping me through my darkest point a few years ago and so happy to see you still here on RUclips. Cheers!! 🌟
Hey, so nice to see you back and glad to hear that things are going better now. Really kind of you to still be sharing positive comments about the channel too :)
Great job. Because they are so thorough,I tend to refer to your videos even after playing the game a few times just to make sure I've learnt everything.
This is not only a fantastic overview of the game, it was also super entertaining. I loved the discussion about determining the most humble player, and I laughed out loud at 5:25. XD
We got this for our family and wow does it seem even more intimidating now, haha. I'll watch the video a couple more times before cracking it open. Nice explanations.
I wanted this one... now I really really really want it. Also, I really like the humor you add to the video like when you say the artwork is great and the animals are cute. it's fun
Thank you for your video Rodney! I very quickly understood how to setup and play this game. As my groups' rules explainer, any resource to make the process easier is a godsend. Keep on making these!
As with all your how to play videos I like the way you explain the set up. And the rest of the game description is clear and concise. Thanks for your efforts.
I really love watching your videos! My husband and I are always watching them with new games we get. I’ve got to wonder- it must be so fun and awesome to play all of these board games with your kids!
Love your channel! I have bought so many games by watching them here first. Everdell is cute, but I never feel like I have enough resources, or that the right cards come up. I don't know if it's an "us" issues, but the kids love the art so much we play it sometimes.
Awesome! I’ve been wanting to play this for a while. Saw that it was on tabletopia the other day and read through the rules. This will be a happy addition to the written rules. Love everything you do Rodney!
Watch It Played Wonderful surprise. It is such an artistic and wonderful game. I love everything about it. Someone had a post on a Facebook page the other day about what was not to like about the game, I had a really hard time thinking of anything I didn’t like. The special events are sometimes just a waste of effort, and don’t seem to give much return. Stones are hard to get, but even that, you can always trade two cards and get what you want. The art and the critters, and the buildings, and the interplay between different cards (Farm/Husband/Wife; Inn/Innkeeper). WE LOVE this game. Thanks for the video. I had to laugh at your use of the Stonnmaier trays for the resources, you are so..... um... neat... We just pile all those suckers up, and the berries roll everywhere!! It is a blast!!
Finally bought this one for my brother. I also wanted one of the expansions, especially Spirecrest but they all have been sold out here so we gotta wait. Another game that I would enjoy playing is Meadow. Love the theme of nature.
Thank you so much! Such great clear explanations and disclaimers. I'm still a little unclear about how/when you prepare for season, giving you access to new workers... regardless I'm looking forward to playing this!
Yay, I have been waiting on this video! I already love the game and have a couple of the expansions, but I love to see you do the videos for new games!
Questions 1. Do any of the board locations that mention discarding cards allow you to discard CITY cards as well as cards in your hand or are they ONLY cards in your hand? 2. The lookout says to "copy a location". We've interpreted this as the worker that lands there can declare it the same as basic or forest location and do the action declared there, so take a resource or draw cards same as being at the other location. It can also be something entirely different the next season since it is the worker's choice. 3. I assume a player who has passed continues earning coins for open spots in their city used by an opponents worker.
1. Just your hand. 2. I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there. 3. Correct!
Hello! I am merely a player of the game. As far as i understand, it is stated in the FAQ that your 2nd assumption is correct. Although i have to specify, i believe the FAQ stated that the lookout allows you to copy 'Any basic or forest location', meaning all locations along the river (basic locations) and the card locations (forest locations). This excludes locations such as the journey, the haven, and destination cards. I hope this helps :)
I bought this for my wife for Christmas as it was recommended to us by someone in a tabletop store. We absolutely love it! Quick question about putting free critters down if you play the corresponding construct. Can you place the free critter on the same turn or do you have to wait for your next turn? Also can the free critter be picked up from the meadow? Thanks for your video mate. It was brilliant and really helped us get going.
Hi Heath, so glad you're enjoying. The construct providing the free Critter doesn't change anything about how the Critter is played (or when), just its cost - so follow all the other rules for placing a critter as usual.
15:48 Do the player that have passed still get a coin when when the other player puts their worker on their card? You mentioned cards and resources cannot be handed to them, but I'm not sure if that was meant to include point tokens or not. Reading the forums it looks like point tokens should be handed over to the passed player, but the rules are a bit fuzzy about that imo.
Hey MT, that's impossible to answer I'm afraid. It's based so much on the individual. I know there are 7 year olds who could learn and play this and 30 year olds who would struggle. But that doesn't mean your 7 year old (or 30 year old ) would have the same experience. It's not so much about the age, as it is their interest and current ability. I'd say you're probably in the best place to judge whether you think they could manage it - does that make sense?
Will be playing this soon with my family, and it is usually up to me to learn the rules to new board games we get. The manual left me with a few questions, and this cleared them up. Thank you very much! Also, that intro spin box move was pretty epic!

I have such a hard time getting the full picture of how the game works just by reading the rulebook. this helped me soo so much. thank you
You're very welcome!
Just bought this last night! Perfect timing!
Same here!
Hope you have a great time playing!
Just played it for the first time today and i cant wait to play again!
So glad you enjoyed!
Man oh man that box spin….. is why I subscribed
Thank you for your video Rodney! I very quickly understood how to setup and play this game. As my groups' rules explainer, any resource to make the process easier is a godsend. Keep on making these!
So glad to know it was helpful!
I just entered the board game world and bought this game. Love your video.now I understand how to play the game. Thank you..😊😊
So glad it was helpful, and welcome to the hobby Venura!
As with all your how to play videos I like the way you explain the set up. And the rest of the game description is clear and concise. Thanks for your efforts.
Thank you for the kind words Bri!
I absolutely love that you used actual blueberries!!!!
Thank you for the wonderful video. So detailed but easy to follow!
Very kind of you to say!
I really love watching your videos! My husband and I are always watching them with new games we get. I’ve got to wonder- it must be so fun and awesome to play all of these board games with your kids!
I don't get as many chances to play as I used to, but no question, my enjoyment of the hobby has only grown over the years!
It’s sooooo clear!!!!! Thanks for your wonderful tutorial!!❤❤❤
Very nice to know it was helpful - have a great time playing!
I just watched this to make sure I didn't make mistakes during my last teach! Thank you! This is my favorite board game😊
Happy to team up!
Love your channel! I have bought so many games by watching them here first. Everdell is cute, but I never feel like I have enough resources, or that the right cards come up. I don't know if it's an "us" issues, but the kids love the art so much we play it sometimes.
You may find the more you play, the more efficient you can be with the resources you have access to!
I love the way you have organized your board games. Subscribed just by looking at that 😀
That extra organizing time was worth it - thanks and welcome Preksha! :)
Great! I've heard a lot about this one and have had my eye on it for a while. A Watch it Played video always makes the decision to buy a lot easier.
I just got this game for Christmas. It's pretty good, there is a lot to keep track of the as the game progresses
Happy to assist :)
Yet another game to add to the old wishlist. Thanks! :)
Glad you enjoyed!
Flawless as usual, great video!
Very glad you enjoyed!
Awesome! I’ve been wanting to play this for a while. Saw that it was on tabletopia the other day and read through the rules. This will be a happy addition to the written rules. Love everything you do Rodney!
Thank you Neil - have a great time playing!
I thought you had already done it! One of our FAVORITE games!!!!!!!!!!
Surprise!
Hopefully you're able to track down one of those expansions -I'm sure it will come back into print.
Love the look and play of this game. Thank you for always explaining it so thoroughly.
You're very welcome Amy - have fun!
used this as a teaching aide for my game tonight, thanks Rodney!
You're welcome - happy to team up with you :) Have fun!
Look at all those wonderful animeeples! Great looking game. Got to have this one.
Glad you liked what you saw :)
Hooray! I’ve been waiting for this one! I’ve had the collector’s edition for a LONG time now, so I’m happy this video is here!
Hope you have a great time playing!
Thank you so much! Such great clear explanations and disclaimers.
I'm still a little unclear about how/when you prepare for season, giving you access to new workers... regardless I'm looking forward to playing this!
Have a great time, I think it will all come together when you play!
what a charismatic host!
Thank you for the kind feedback.
Yay, I have been waiting on this video! I already love the game and have a couple of the expansions, but I love to see you do the videos for new games!
Thanks for the kind words - glad you've enjoyed this one!
My grandson loves this one. Now I think I’m ready to try a game w him!
I hope you both have a great time playing :)
Great video Rodney. Seen the hype and reviews but I was missing your video with the rules. Getting this game asap.
Have a great time playing it Joel!
One of the best games ever made!!!...But Mrs Rodney is the best game reviewer ever walked the Earth!!!💖😀💖
You are too kind!
Thanks, Rodney. A great How to Play as always!
Questions
Hooray! Everdell at last! Reminds me of BGG Spring, last year . . . Dang, I'm gonna miss that con.
Me too!!
I did not realize you did this game! Very glad.
I got you covered Ben!
Great video! We just opened up the game and after seeing the instructions went for YT instead :)
I hope the video helps and you have a great time playing!
Me 3h ago : "I'm wondering how this plays"
Rodney : BAM!
Let's do this!
I’ve been meaning to check this one out for a while! Thanks Rodney!
You're very welcome!
Do you need to setup the tree? 😊 Thx for this guide as allways.
You don't have to - it's really your preference (some find it kind of gets in the way of some people's view).
Yep, they would still get coins when people use their cards.
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks!
thanks for the useful video
one question, please
From where you get the holder for coins and resources?
thanks again
You can pick up some game trayz here: watchitplayed.tv/bgg-store/
Yet again, you suckered me into another great game Rodney! Lol thanks and keep up the great work!
So glad you enjoyed it Jeffrey!
Great explanation as usual!
Thank you kindly!
Thanks for detail explanation. Was thinking to buy this to play with my kids, but they are only 7 & 9yr. Will it be too complicated for them?
Hey MT, that's impossible to answer I'm afraid. It's based so much on the individual. I know there are 7 year olds who could learn and play this and 30 year olds who would struggle. But that doesn't mean your 7 year old (or 30 year old ) would have the same experience. It's not so much about the age, as it is their interest and current ability. I'd say you're probably in the best place to judge whether you think they could manage it - does that make sense?
