      It really was an emotional moment and I applaud the studio's boldness to do so, even if it was only to sell new toys. Tbh, I felt like bringing Prime back in S3 of the show cheapened his death, much like 'Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock' cheapened Spock's death at the end of 'Wrath of Khan'.

    Seasons 1 and 2 took place before the movie. Seasons 3 and 4 after. It’s been so long since I’ve seen them. The two main humans in seasons 1 and 2 were Spike and his dad. The movie jumped the story forward 20 years. Daniel was introduced on the movie. The TV series never really killed anyone, just injure then repair, so the shear amount of death in the movie, unceremonious death at that, was shocking. Optimus Prime was resurrected once or twice post movie (apparently because fans hates his death so much). One post movie episode that I remembered and just rewatched a week or so ago was Ghost in the Machine where the ghost of Starscream manages to reactivate Unicron in order to get him to make him a new body.

      Yeah, they did the episode “The Return of Optimus Prime” as a two-parter that capped off the end of season three… and season four had like 3-5 episodes!
      In the USA, at least. Japanese audiences got a whole extra story arc featuring the headmasters, target masters, and other proto-minicon-like gimmick characters.

    Fun little tid-bit as to why Marvel was credited: The Transformers were originally a failing toy brand in Japan that was purchased by Hasbro. In order to market the toys they hired writers from Marvel to create characters for each toy and begin writing a TV show. That's why Transformers was also a comic series under Marvel from 84' to 91'.

    Essentially, Hasbro wanted to introduce a new line of Transformers toys as the series had been running since 1984 and felt that Prime, Megatron and the other core cast had run their course so they used the movie to kill off most of the original mainline G1 characters and bring in Hot Rod, Ultramagnus, Galvatron, Cyclonus, Kup, Arcee and Scourge, among others. The fans took Optimus Prime's death so hard that they received hate mail before deciding to bring him back in season 3.

    Season 1 and 2 lead up to this. After the movie they did Season 3. Kids like me were devastated when Optimus Prime died so the brought him back to life at the end of Season 3. I saw this in theaters when I was 8. Also the music composer was the same composer for Rocky 4. Last Optimus ends up opening the Matrix at the end of Season 3.

    The first two seasons took place in "current year", then the movie time-jumped 20 years, and the rest of the original series carried on from there.
    Spike is Sam Witwicky. He and his dad Sparkplug were the human element of the show, a couple of roughneck blue collar workers, mechanics I think, who could allegedly help out with repairs of the Autobots' vehicular forms.

    The movie came out after season 2. They killed off many major characters to basically introduce new characters a.k.a toys to sell. Season 3 picks up right after the movie which was really cool.

  • @pigs18
    @pigs18 11 месяцев назад +1

    So a little background. The movie came out between seasons 2 and 3 but due to the production time is missing most of the characters introduced throughout Season 2 (and there were _a lot_ of them). The movie killed off almost all of the older characters and focused on this group of all new characters. Arcee, Springer, Blurr, Ultra Magnus, Hot Rod, and Kup were all introduced here. As a result, kids were not emotionally invested in any of the characters in the film and it did not perform well. Imagine if you went to the theaters to watch Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and the movie followed the Ravagers once Stallone shows up. The cartoon picked up after the movie (and was called Transformers 2010 in Japan), but the new characters never really caught on like the originals did. Some were resurrected, but the kids had already moved on. The fourth season was scrapped and only the opening five part mini series was released.
    A couple of notes:
    -They're turning into boomboxes because it was the 80s. (Technically Soundwave is a microcassette recorder which were used primarily in businesses.)
    -The Insecticons were introduced in Revenge of the Fallen as life sized insects.
    -The GI Joe movie was made around the same time. It was supposed to be a theatrical release but the Transformers and My Little Pony movies did so poorly in the theaters that the GI Joe film was pulled off the schedule and the reaction to Prime dying led them to change the dialogue to indicate that Duke just went into a coma.
    -Good catch on the matrix sounding like a lightsaber. That was the actual sound effect.
    -With the exception of Ultra Magnus, the new toys were based on the animation rather than the other way around. As a result, they didn't how the toys would actually transform and Hot Rod's transformation isn't drawn the same way twice during the film. (My favorite is when his arms extend and his entire body rotates around.)

    Hotrod didn’t get hurt/best Galvatron so easy because when he started to use the matrix, his body was upgraded (he got taller, deeper voice, truck alternate mode). I’m around your age (37) but used to see all the transformers stuff on reruns (and got this movie second hand). So I saw this a bunch of times as a kid

  • @christophercurran788
    @christophercurran788 10 месяцев назад +1

    As you know this is from the 80's thus why their transformations were based off house hold gadgets and machinery. In addition to cars and military style jets, yes Megatron was a gun (Walter P model) because the original toy came from a line called Machine Robo in Japan, which all the figures came from. Diaclon and more. Yes Optimus died because the executives of Hasbro wanted him to die along with the entire roster of orignal Autobots in a blaze of glory so new toys could be made and sold. It is a great animated film for its tiem and has aged well. If you look at Bayformers, you will find that all the movies thus far are inspired from the G1 lines episodes. however Rise of the Beast takes inspiration from Beast wars and Beast machines, Yes This movie takes place after season 2 of transformers before season three five episode opening, Five Faces of Darkness.

    Trivia: this movie is where Hasbro specifically created new toys just for the Transformers brand. Previous ones were from Japanese toy lines Diaclone and Machine Robo (with a roundabout rumored American toy line that Takara acquired designs from). During toy development, Ultra Magnus and Galvatron were made to be City Commanders of the giant transforming bases Metroplex and Trypticon for the Autobots and Decepticons respectively. The city toys weren't ready in time for movie production, which is why there's the placeholder name "Autobot City" that got left in. The movie team kept their secrets well, such that the comics and Japanese cartoons wrote whole stories with Ultra Magnus and Galvatron being second in command under Optimus Prime and Megatron. This made sense that they would be rivals, since their toys were due to be released in the States at the same time, and they were both big robots. Hot Rod / Rodimus Prime had a much smaller toy, so nobody thought he would end up being made an equal to Galvatron as leader of their respective factions. The UK comics were released weekly instead of monthly as was usual in the States, so they ended up making up a bunch of their own continuity, including that Galvatron was a time traveler from the future and not a rebuilt Megatron.

They were strapped from head to toe in both modes, they could all fly in robot mode, and nothing could ever hurt them! Plus their toys must've sold like hot cakes, because they seemingly had endless plot armor in the handful of times all of the above stuff couldn't save them!

    I never counted how many transformers on both sides got axed in the film, I'm pretty sure I could get quite plastered if I made a drinking game out of it. This flick was both the best & worst thing Sunbow Studios did. Fan backlash to Optimus' death was the reason Duke wasn't killed off in the GI Joe animated movie, with him instead being put into his 3rd or 4th coma. One of the Blu Ray/DVD sets (I think the one with the hologram cover) has a special Easter egg documentary that tells of the backlash & how it doomed Sunbow Studios. I still have the CD soundtrack & score of the film. Say what you will about 80s music, but it was inspiring.
    In the original release of the film, the commercials of the time said that you had to see it twice to take it all in; I did. I had 2 of the toys that were killed off in the film, namely Blue Streak & Brawn. Boy was I pissed.

    Robots in disguise! Glad you decided to react to it--I hadn't seeen it either. It was worth the watch, as I LOVE corny 80s movies in the vein of Rocky IV!!

    You seem to have a condescending negative remark for every aspect of the movie shame!

      Real talk that is what I heard! This movie pushed the envelope, caused controversy can I had one of the dopest soundtracks ever! I can't really name another cartoon like that that had a movie that lasted and was popular as this one for even 20 years!

    They messed up on the Transformers live action movies. In the original Transformers animated cartoon series. Megatron was a gun not a Jet fighter. Also in the original Transformers animated cartoon series. Megatron was never frozen on Earth like it showed in the first Transformers live action movie. The first Transformers live action movie showed a Decepticon police car. The Decepticons never had a police car. In the beginning of the original Transformers cartoon series. The Decepticons mostly had Jet fighters. With the exception of Megatron being a gun, Soundwave being a cassette recorder/walkman, and Shockwave not too sure what he is because he stayed on cybertron. Later the Decepticons had Automobiles like the Constructicons and the Stunticons. Also including the Insecticons. Plus The Decepticons had 2 triple changers. One called Astrotrain that transformed into a space shuttle and a train. The other triple changer is called Blitzwing that transformed into a jet plane and a tank. The Autobots Introduced Jetfire who is a plane later in the original cartoon series. Jetfire was an Autobot that was frozen on Earth. In the original cartoon series. It was the Autobots that always had cars and Bumblebee was a VW bug. Then later on in the original cartoon series the Autobots added the Dinobots. Who were transforming dinosaurs. Also the Autobots added the Aerialbots That transformed into planes. Plus I can't forget Omega Supreme who is an Autobot that transforms into a rocket. This is what happens when people start believing in what the movies put out and not knowing the history of the Transformers. If they would've made the movies just like the cartoon series. Then the movies would be great. But the movies are just ok.
