- California's shores are taking a pounding from dangerous waves. Powerful storms have churned up ocean water, resulting in waves as high as 40 feet. Those waves are causing chaos on land, damaging structures and bringing flooding to the area. Carter Evans has more.

as the old saying goes; "The sea is like a cruel mistress. You can love her, you can hate her, but you can never trust her."

What a toxic relationship, lol. I guess that's why I live by the mountains now?
@@user-lf4td9xr4v you still have to deal with flooding and land slides
@@The_QuaaludeI’d be more worried of wildfires and droughts in the mountains.
@@The_Quaalude”the sea”
I just hope that poor little truck isn't too traumatized.
Every now and again the ocean just let's us know how powerful she is.
I live in Ventura. There were no 40-foot waves. Maybe 20-foot. There was just one wave that came in that flooded streets and buildings in one location.
Exactly. The news always pumps it up.
Media wants to scare people. It's a control thing
The bubbleheaded bleached blonde comes on at 5 ...
Newsflash hunny, Venture wasn't the only place to receive these ways. the 40 ft waves were calculated before the event in Venture and other places such as Malibu had severe damage to homes.
Fake news, as usual.
Building a home on the oceanfront is like putting a screen door on a submarine.
nice view, they can afford it & much of CA coast shoreline is elevated hundreds of feet.
not really!
🥴…
Our Lord even suggested against it
Obama sure did get one right on the water after saying the seas were rising
Duh, these are King Tides. They happen in California a couple of times every year in December, January and sometimes February. If they happen with stormy weather the waves are higher.
People should never build anything so close to beaches, rivers, unstable cliffs, etc. If you get yourself in trouble then you can only blame yourself.
It look really nice to live near water. But it is a bad move I’ve seen homes swallowed by lakes and rivers.
Nature used to be so predictable that owning property near a lake or sea used to be so expensive that only the rich could afford it. Now they are a liability around the world. I live in New Zealand and we are in the same predicament.
I'm sure multi million homes are insured. 😂
wait until the insurance companies stop insuring those properties that are at 100% risk of failure.
@@OneDishWonder234 I believe State Farm has pulled out of insuring oceanfront homes in Florida.
High surf warning! People-
Lets go sit on the beach and get swamped by rogue waves!
It’s crazy to see the people running from this…
As usual I am NOT shocked when I see or hear about how Californians do things. Example: They are told the beaches are closed because they are too dangerous? Then that will be the next place they will go. This 'big sand berm' will save your homes and businesses. Now that is a real joke. I guess they feel better when anything is done. It won't even take a rogue wave to level that 'berm'. That berm is going to be GONE within the week. Get a brain of any kind and stop thinking you are going to rise above the actions of Mother Nature. It is very hard for me to feel sorry for them.
Its the same people who want to pet the bison.
& feed bears when camping @@dreamsofturtles1828
In all fairness, when you live close to the beach in CA it’s very common to just go…you aren’t checking the weather daily. 😂
You've gotta be a suicidal surfer to try and ride a 40 foot wave.
Meh, it's done all the time, look at half moon bay. :)
Yup, half moon bay in November
I used to live on Oahu and every winter I would watch these kids that couldn't have been older than 13 riding 30ft waves on body boards. It blew me away how nonchalant they were about it too. I would have died if I tried going out there😂
@@zaddyD123
One of the videos I saw yesterday had a board minus surfer in it. That guy had some tough swimming to do.
Ride ride ride the wild surf !
WOW ! What a journalist ! Waves are Churning up Ocean WATER ! OMG NO WAY !
Thank you rain for washing our California sidewalks full of needles, crap, urine.
Some of the most raddest waves to hit the coast in a while. I nearly broke my board in half.
An probably your neck?
@nouseforaname5583 lmao 🤣
My rear has 2 cracks now … thanks to the waves
@@squidjames7735 bro why go in that dangerous water? I know I'm all in for big waves but I fear those rip currents
Wow! Nature wins again. #Respect
It’s not a huge storm that’s making these waves. It was an earthquake in the middle of the ocean that took three days for the waves to hit Southern California.
YOU LIVE NEXT TO THE OCEAN! MOVE FURTHER INLAND!
Been surfing all week since Christmas one of the best weeks of my life
You go dennis Wilson
This is a sign bigger waves 👋 coming

Maybe it will wash the poop off the streets of San Francisco
Yes,build houses right up to the sea shore.
Omg….that’s crazy!!😮😢
Funny, I see no waves at all and I am in the beach cities of socal. Long Beach, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach. Oh, its just a small part of a humongous state? Then why pretend like the world is ending for the whole of the western coast.
If you lived where it's flooding you'd think different I'm sure.
That's because it didn't go that far south. It was here in Ventura.

And THIS is why we live inland on a hill. Tsunami proof ! 🐧
And I live near a hill thru which passes a fault line! :-)

Volcano?
Just gotta be careful with landslides now
Hawaii’s getting the same large waves 🌊 🏄🏄♂️ like California 🤙 .

Glad mother nature is cleaning that mess up.

How do you fail to prepare for something that happens cyclically?
Ask Florida
For us in the UK, this is just normal in Winter. I find it rather puzzling that there are no sea defences in front of some of those towns... that's nuts.
It's normally not that crazy it's only normally crazy weather in the Midwest
I find it interesting that you guys don't have protections against Earthquakes and wildfires
@@deannelson9565 we don't have protection against earthquakes because we don't live in an area prone to them, ie, near any fault lines.
We do get wildfires and always have done. Thats why we have helicopters and aircraft to put them out.
UK windfires are not that impressive compared to the ones in US. Let's be real here.
@@kaspervestergaard2383 I didn't realise it was a competition... most of our wildfires in the UK go un-noticed by the vast majority because they happen in sparsely populated areas.

All this means is that surfers cancel everything & go down to the beach without fail. 🤣🤣🤣
It’s not climate change, God’s wrath, or any of that.
This has been happening in California for decades.
The only thing crazy about this is that coastal people and towns are still surprised when it happens and still don’t have solutions to deal with it.
STOP talking so loud. WE HEAR YOU.

Lafayette here…..these kind of waves happen every year Jan- Feb in north and west northwest of Puerto Rico. Great surfing times. Last year was more than usual, but they have always been…as these waves have for southern Cali.
Cycles are cycle, they can be disturbed, but cannot be stopped. As for Louisiana we are still behind on annual rain fall, crazy summer!

Louisiana keeps getting destroyed by hurricanes one after another
Esses tipos de ressaca do mar, estão acontecendo aqui no Brasil! Não com tanta intensidade, mas está!

Surfers run TOWARD the waves
What’s going on?
I swear I LOVE surfers. LOL
The news could report super dangerous 100+ feet, society-ending monster waves and surfers will run out there with their boards and be like "Surf's Up, bro!!"'
Except the ones crying for help in Ventura that led to a lifeguard being injured after trying to save them.
@nylotus They figure No risk no reward. lol
40' waves that are conspicuously absent from this video. However we will show you one that is at least 8'. Maybe.

Waves coming from all angles weee not used to ? Surely the sea always goes in and out and across it how it works

Surfs up
Design fat plastic C-shape wall-sections of interlocking infrastructure: make them nest in stacks for storage; design them to stand end-to-end against sand-berm-backing and buried-footing. Wave forces that would top the height of the berm, redirect up and away following the C-shape, they're stationary shovels for for waves: thus inbound surges become airborne outbound crests. Concrete versions already exist, but these could be deployed circumstantially.
