Welcome to FlossTube, Laurel. I am looking forward to more of your videos and your progress on the cross-stitch "learning curve." Your work is lovely and your subjects diverse. Also - for someone relatively new to cross-stitch; you are to be admired for using or wanting to work on linen. I have 20+ years of stitching under my belt, and I a still hanging on to Aida (14-18 count) for dear life! Take care and stay well and safe.
Hi Jasmine, thank you for the lovely comments! Ha, I just thought I was "supposed" to work on linen :) I'm quickly learning in cross stitch there is a lot of wiggle room in fabrics. I, too, still enjoy working on aida, especially at night!
It is nice to see a fellow beginner. I have not done cross stitch since I was a child and am starting from the very beginning. Covid has me wanting to fulfill my passion for needlework of all kinds. Your owl is gorgeous. You are doing a great job.
Cotton kittens is adorable! The feet on the fat little kitty are adorable! I have the owl kit you are working on in my stash and would love to stitch it one of these days! Love seeing your progress on it because I haven't seen anyone stitching it yet. The "fuzzy little butt" cracked (no pun intended!) me up! I may have to get this book for my future grandchildren's stash :) Have a great stitchy week! - Laura
Thank you, Laura! I'm excited to hear from someone who also has the owl kit! It feels like it's an exercise in determination! I love the idea of storing books about for a future grand child's book stash 🥰
Cotton Kittens finished up so cute!!! Evenweave is different than linen. It’s a man made product with perfectly spaced squares. Linen is made of 100% linen and is not perfectly square, but pretty close.
Just discovered you on Flosstube. Enjoying all your projects. Lakeside Linen has the color Lentil. Just google and you’ll find all the counts it comes in and who carries it 🤗
Lovely to see you again. Your cotton kittens are so cute and I love your eagle owl, he is so imposing. He just draws my attention and is going to be magnificent when he's finished. It also looks like you've had fun shopping! Nice choices, even if they aren't the right size. Enjoy your new start. Take care and hugs, Diane 😘
Thank you, Diane! I am slowly building my fabric stash, even if they are too small! I think those pieces might be great for some of the Twin Peaks Primitives you are fond of. 😊
The owl is absolutely gorgeous. Just stunning, you’ll have have something awesome to hang on the wall. I’m wanting to try Lugana as well. Have only ever used Aida. I think you need a youtube channel dedicated to reading books to kids. You read so well! Such animation and clarity in your voice. Can imagine kids (and adults) loving your reading videos. 😊
Thank you for the wonderful compliment 😊 I think a RUclips channel for reading to my students may be in the future for the start of the new school year 😐
Hi Laurel Have you seen the fabric calculator on 123Stitch? In the fabric tab, just scroll down and there is one for aida and a different one for evenweave/linen. Just pop the design size width and height in then how many inches you want to leave around the sides for finishing and the count of the fabric you want. It will work out how much fabric you'll need. I hope that makes sense and that you find it helpful. Feel free to ask any questions if you're unsure, happy to help you. :) Marie
The owl picture is amazing! The eyes are so life-like. I also don’t enjoy having a lot of wips. I love that you include a book at the end. Nice job on the video.
Cotton Kittens is adorable! And I also love that owl! I always loved reading to my kids when they were little, & I always loved getting them involved in the summer reading programs at our local libraries & Barnes & Noble, etc. My son is in his 20’s & wants me to stitch him a Pokemon project (Gengar), so I might check that Etsy shop & see if they have one. 😊
Thank you for the kind words! That is so great to hear you have wonderful memories of visiting the library and reading to your children. :) I'm sure one of the Etsy shops has that Pokémon - there are so many out there. That is going to be *a lot* of purple for you to stitch!
My vote is to use the gray fabric for the Madme Chantilly piece. Also, don't feel you need to use the over-dyed threads for a piece, alot of times DMC is just good. Or use DMC for the smaller sections and the over-dyed threads for big chunks of color.
What a sweetheart you are! I’ll look forward to seeing more from you. Order yourself some Evenweave to try first. You can totally see where to put your needle with each stitch. I like it the best. I only wish it came in a higher count. I think you’ll like it, especially for your large Halloween piece. See you soon! Edited to add: you can pick up a fairly large piece at your local Joannes or Michaels stores to see if you like it.
Thank you for the lovely comments and tips! I haven't tried the linen fabrics yet, as I am intimidated a bit. The 32 ct lugana was easy enough to see, but stitching over two was tricky at first :) I have seen 40 ct evenweave called Verdal (?) on KittenStitcher.com for fairly cheap, but it only comes in white!
Aida has half the number of squares , so 20 count Aida and 40 count linen or even weave are basically the same. In Aida you’d stitch 2 over 1 and with linen you’d stitch 2 over 2 and get the same sized stitch. So 14 ct. Aida would be like 28 count linen, 16 would equal 36 and so on. So if 40 count linen is too hard to stitch you could try 20 count Aida. As someone else said, you don’t necessarily have to use the same fabric count as the pattern, it will just change the size the project turns out. Your kittens are just sweet, I’ve never seen that pattern before . I loved reading books to my children, their children and many children I worked with over the years in education and child psychology. My grandsons book he likes the most right now is Chi ken Soup With Rice by Maurice Sendak. They read the book in class at the beginning of the school year and as the story tells of how they will eT it each month they would get it out the first day of the month and read that months verse. Since school has been out since March he comes to my copy every first to read that month to me and then reads it to his parents and sister. It’s such a cute book, he’s not the first child I’ve seen fall in love with it. Happy stitching🙋🏼
Thank you for the explanation of fabrics! ☺️ What a lovely story of your grandson - Maurice Sendak is such a classic author, I'm happy to hear his work is still being read! 📖
I love that flower wall hanging behind you. Please let me know where you got it. I also love the budding kittens, I will have to get the pattern. I’m glad I found your site. Beautiful work!
Thank you! It’s from Pier One imports bought 2 years ago, but I don’t see it on the website anymore. 😞 If it helps, the art is a large piece of wood with wooden flower petals.
So glad I found you ! Enjoyed the video! Have been thinking about getting that owl kit so now that I have seen you stitching it well you know 😂! Thanks, Kim T in Fl🏝
Hi Laurel. I love the progress on your owl piece! It looks really good! Just a tip... you don't need to stitch with the fabric that the pattern has called for unless you want too. And jumping up to 40ct when you've only worked on aida could be daunting. I'd start with some evenweave like 28ct lugana, jobelan or monaco and see how stitching over 2 works for you. You wedding ring is gorgeous! I enjoyed your book reading.
Hi Kristi, thank you for your suggestions and your kind comments! I felt like I "should" stitch on called for because the designer "knows best." Ah, such a rule follower :) I ordered 28 ct wren for the Shenandoah piece and I think that's what I'll use!
you are doing great. you just to find d someone who work you enjoy and ask them for suggestions. Learning to calculate the amount fabric needed is easy to learn. I can help you with that. I also will suggest someone that helps me and we have never met. She is great. Good Luck.😉
Omg I LOVE that Halloween black cat pattern, I must stitch it 😂🔮🧙🏻♀️ Your owl is spectacular, it’s going to be stunning, can’t wait to see more progress ❤️ as a new flosstuber I’m finding there’s definitely a learning curve to making videos, I’ve had to re-record as well 😬 it seems like you liked stitching on the linen, I’ve only tried it once. Did you find it to be thinner? You have some amazing fabrics too!
Rainbow Cat Stitcher Thank you for your kind comments! 🥰 Yes, I had no idea how much work went into making these videos. It gave me a new appreciation for everyone who makes them. I’ve only tried 32 count Lugana, which is an even weave so the holes are...even? 🤨 It took a little bit of learning and felt like I forgot how to cross stitch because over two threads is strange at first. I bought 40 count because I saw so many charts called for it! 😟 But I’ve seen a lot of people use counts they are more comfortable with instead...so those 40 counts will likely stay put away until I find a small enough project for them.
Rainbow Cat Stitcher Yes, let’s do it! That would be so much fun! The chart calls for 40 count murky, but I’m going with 32. It can also be done on Aida. I “splurged” for classic colors works, which will be my first time using anything not DMC. After we receive our goodies, let’s pick a time to start. 🎃 👻
Mountain Laurel Stitches Yay!! I’ll order my fabric tomorrow, maybe I’ll splurge as well! I’ll take a look at the called for. I’ve only used fancy flosses once and they were WDW, but I’d love to try more! ❤️ can’t wait!
I can't have more than 2 or 3 WIPs. I tried Stitch Maynia this year and ended up with 7 WIPs and they all contain major mistakes. I put them in time-out and stuck with 2 favorites. WIPs are not in my personality. Your stitching looks gorgeous. You are waaaaay past a beginner stitcher.
I agree, Susan. Although I do have to put a WIP in time-out more frequently than I’d like... It’s so tempting to have so many more WIPs going, but I know that’s a surefire way to feel overwhelmed. Thank you for the kind words 😊
Cotton Kittens is adorable! Nice work!
I love the cotton kittens, and your owl project is gorgeous. Cats and owls are what I love and collect. Nice to "meet" you on this video.
Thank you, Kathy! 😀
Laurel, I have so enjoyed watching your first two videos. Cotton kittens is gorgeous and looking forward to seeing your new starts 😊
Thank you so much, Lauren :)

The cotton kitties are adorable. I enjoyed your video very much.
Thank you so much, Amy! :)
Loved your video. I look forward to following your progress.
Thank you, Darlene :)

Thank you! They are adorable - now if I could only FFO them 😬

Long Dawg Stitcher Ah, that makes sense 😅 Thank you taking the time to answer that question!
Just discovered you on Flosstube. Enjoying all your projects.
Lakeside Linen has the color Lentil. Just google and you’ll find all the counts it comes in and who carries it 🤗
Ah, thank you, Darly! 😊 I will keep that in mind for the future. I ended up going with PTP "Wren" and it looks great!

Thank you! 😊

The level of detail Russian designers have with their charts is so amazing and I agree the eagle looks real from a distance. Thanks for watching! :)

Your owl is amazing and Halloween Quaker is one of my favorites.
Thank you, Leigh! The Halloween Quaker is hard to put down :)
I just loved the book talk by dear. I think I could have listen to you read the whole story😊
Oh, that's so wonderful to hear :)
It's so nice to see a fellow bookish cross stitcher! I was so happy to find your channel!

No, even weave is not linen, like Lugana or jobelyn. It is supposed to be slightly easier to use than linen.
