I had always read that they didn’t want priests to marry and have children because they then wouldn’t leave property to the Church. In earlier years the priests were usually from wealthier families and would have more that they would leave behind.

It was a canonical issue ( priest should marry only before ordination) and this created problems for some because they could not find a wife and the married ones either had big families, wished to get rid or their wives or even had mistresses, which was scandalous. So, to solve the matter, if one wished to be a priest he had to be celibate, period.

Age of Consent laws in the U.S. are left up to the states so if one has sex in say some of the southern states where the law says 14 is the age of consent you are fine, but travel to Nebraska where the law says 16 and you are now guilty of statuary rape. A lot of you missed the point of that change to the California law. The existing law allowed a judge to decide if a man was a sex offender if he had sex valginally but if that same man had anal sex, he was automatically a sex offender. The politician just wanted the existing law to apply equally to any sex act.
