- Old, weather beaten, gnarly, and insect eaten. Just the kind of log I find irresistible! I had a long time subscriber stop by my workshop a few days ago and drop off some wood he harvested from a fallen tree the fell on a road during a recent blustery day. I told him there was no guarantee I'd even use it... but I've had it on my mind non stop since he dropped it off, lol...
So, Greg Spangler, or rather, Woody, I very much enjoyed meeting you and talking shop with you! You're a highly skilled woodworker and I'm honored to have you among my subscribers and friends! Thank you so much for thinking of me when you cut up that old beast of a tree!

Dont you get 'tairouts' (dont know how to spell it) when you use the carbide?

Thank you! I didn't have a issue with tear outs on this bowl. Sharp tip with light pressure... but I don't use it very often so I'm not an expert with the carbide tipped tools.
Sterilizing the bowl by shock freezing it for a couple of days in the freezer might have been a good idea.

Honestly? I really hope NO ONE uses any of your bowls for soup! Merry Christmas!

Absolutely gorgeous! So glad you left it as natural as possible. It can be a little time consuming blowing the Acks paste out of all the bug trails, but totally worth it!

Good Christmas Eve Morning, Rod. The piece of wood you started with, looked a lot like many of my projects. Cracks and tracks but I wanted to see what was inside. Character for sure. This video made me smile.

I love imperfections in wood. It’s what gives it character and makes it one of a kind. Knotholes are my favorites.

Thank for your comment. I work mostly with reclaimed lumber for that very same reason...the abuse, dings, scratches can all be sanded shaped to look almost new but they still carry some marks of the past...isn't our heavenly father great! Merry Christmas.

The bowl looks good to me despite the cracks and big trails. Nice job MSgt Humphrey.
This video gives me some encouragement on turning some bitch that has nothing but bug trails going through it. Last piece I tried turning ended up in the firewood pile since hi was totally dissatisfied with its appearance and would not finish well with all the small bits of wood dust that came from it.

That bowl reminds me of an old SgtMaj I had back in the early 80's.......(seemed) old as dirt, worn, weathered and still tough as nails. Merry Christmas to you and all of yours.
