I am so glad I got to drive a truck back in the good old days(70's and 80's) when you could just Drive a Truck. Paper Logs were all we had, no computers, nobody watching you, no cellphones, etc... I was single back then and ran all 48 States and Canada.
We actually had fun in those days talking on the CB Radio's, stopping whenever we wanted to and where we wanted to. Only had to check in once a day in the morning to let dispatch know "roughly" where we were and if we were going to be on time at destination. My truck was not governed at all and had everything I needed for comfort. That Old 359 Pete longnose was a great ride.

    Congrats on the new house.
Leaving my girls, wife, daughters, and fur baby, was the toughest part of the job when I was in a truck. Honestly, if I didn’t have a family I would still be doing it. I loved the alone time. (32 years as a LEO I needed to clear my head)
But you do what’s best for all involved when you have a family that you cherish. They had put up with we missing a lot of things for over 30 years. Time for me to give back to them. 😊

      @TheJoyofTrucking  Год назад +1

Thanks for sharing your personal experience! So how long did you drive? I’m sure there was a lot to process after a long career as a LEO. Sounds like you had a lot of loving and supportive family members. Glad you’re now spending time with them. And you can keep traveling with us. 🤗

@@TheJoyofTrucking I only did it for just over a year full time. I had experience because my father was a trucker.
I got my Class “A” in 1982 when I was a firefighter. So over the years, on my days off, I would run the truck at times. (Yes I was a FF and Paramedic prior to becoming a police officer 🤪.)
After I retired I decided to give a full time shot. Like I said I enjoyed it. But the time away from family, weeks at a time just caused another type of stress.
I came off the road just as COVID hit full effect.

I hope you have a good trainer. I had 50/50. But listen to them, if they have true OTR experience they will be able to help you tremendously.
Now a piece of advice from a total stranger. After you get your time in, about a year, look elsewhere.
There are other companies out here with better pay and fleet managers. Fleet managers who will make sure you not only get work, and miles. But also make sure you get home time.
You will understand when you are on your own.
      Good luck and be safe.

I always scale a Tcalled load unless it's a light load. The scale ticket was with the other drivers truck. They may not have a Kenworth and your truck is heavier than a Cascadia plus the other driver might have been low on fuel when they scaled and their 5th wheel might not be adjusted to the same position your fixed 5th wheel is set and you might have more fuel than the other driver when they scaled plus you have a passenger so thats extra weight too.

I forgot what my house looks like. I will be quitting the industry soon and I can not wait. I am done with everyone getting worse on the road and never being "home". I am done with driving altogether. I am going to work on living in nature away from people. People are so annoying. I am tired of all the trucks going their max speed through construction. I am tired of trucks making all of us look bad by cutting off vehicles in the left lane just to pass another truck that is governed one mile an hour less. I am tired of trucks going forty miles an hour through the truck stop. I am tired of four wheelers getting away with driving fifty miles over the speed limit and cutting me off right before the exit ramp just to wait at a traffic light. I am dick of living around these nasty people throwing their own feces and pee on the concrete. Ten years and I had enough. I am ready to live like a normal person. People do not realize that I threw away a normal life just to haul their crap. I am ready to be with my family.

Glad you are back and congrats on the house! I am on the fence about Crete and wondered if you could help. I am a former Werner driver that did SE dedicated home weekly. The same type of run for Crete only pays about .54/mile. The OTRs start at .60/mile. I have two years experience but, that doesn't count for much at Crete. Can you negotiate with them or, is it a take it or leave it deal? Having only done home weekly, I don't know how I would do going 21 days out from the beginning?

Hi there! That’s a good question. Kevin started at 62cpm for the 21 days. He did not negotiate as we thought it was set. He only had one year experience. I would say why not try. Maybe that second year experience could get you more. And yes, from 1 to 3 weeks is a big jump. And since you get 1 day for every six out Kevin likes to do minimum 24 days out to then get 4 days home. That is a tough call in your part. Sorry we don’t have a better answer for you. Let us know if you have other questions.

I deliver for the largest grocery retail in Canada (Loblaw) and I was just in the Sudbury area a couple weeks ago. It's absolutely beautiful up there. Sudbury is also home to Canada's version of the IRS, so you should have burned it down before you left. Lol. I'm glad you had fun. Hope to meet you some day.

You can take your home time. You can take extra unpaid days. You get one week paid vacation after your first year. And the paid vacation time increases over time (don’t recall when or how much). Communication is key. So far never a problem except last Christmas. We didn’t know that for Christmas you have to ask in advance because they only allow a certain percentage of drivers to take time off at that time.
