IPS-101, the Clone AGS-101 LCD Kit

  • 2x integer scaling ("4 in 1" as they call it), IPS panel, original dimensions of the AGS-101 LCD. Sounds like it has everything.
    Actually, it is pretty nice. It's kinda hard to spot since the only seller that I've found and confirmed seems to downplay what the kit actually is.
    Speaking of, here is that seller (you want the "copy" or "clone" or "new version" or whatever they change the label to -- it should be the cheaper variant): www.aliexpress...
    Here are some more pictures and close up images: imgur.com/a/er...
    And finally, my measurements on power usage and brightness: drive.google.c...
    Looks like retrogamerepairshop has started stocking these things: retrogamerepai...
    Any thoughts on what I should do with this thing? It should work on any AGB with the standard AGS-101 adapters, any AGS-101, or even an AGS-001 with a voltage regulator. I'm leaning towards building out another AGS-001. Thoughts?
    Oh and btw, it does not work with an AGS-001 any more than an AGS-101 LCD does: • Fake AGS-101 LCD in a ...

    So cool, thanks for making a video on it. Might have to order one of these when I can afford it. Shame it doesn't work on GBC, but at least we have the other IPS kit. You need a metal spudger! I've probably opened close to 200 AGS-101 screens by now and the spudger I use makes it really fast and easy.

    Hey, I'm the lad that first posted about wanting to make a replacement ribbon for one of these. Great video! I suspected the technology was different (though that was obvious with a big honkin chip in the back) but it really surprised me that it has the same 4x scaling as the FP kits. If only they were cheaper!
    These could be a really good alternative for those who don't want to worry about cutting their shells when upgrading to an ips

  • @AtoManPL
    @AtoManPL 4 года назад +6

    It makes sense for it to use the original 101 screen form factor, because you can use it with 101 boards (and possibly 001?), and I assume chinese warehouses have loads of three ribbon converters anyway, lol.
    What you could test is how the screen behaves with PocketNES/NES Classic emulated titles, whether it's leasing artifacts behind like IPS V2 or not.
    That said, I also saw those on AliExpress and they seemed cheaper than "regular" 101 ones, but still more expensive than IPS mod or the "one dead pixel" ones you can get on eBay. I thought of getting one along with 101 board to make a semi-original 101, but since it is not original... Well, I Hope the prices will go down after that virus outbreak passes

  • @CristianG13
    @CristianG13 4 года назад +4

    They probably dont ship with the “correct” ribbon cable so that not only can it be used with the AGS101, but so it can be used with either model of the original GBA via the right adapter

  • @chamoo232

    That's a very interesting screen. I still prefer the actual IPS mod but this look like a good alternative for someone looking to repair/upgrade an AGS-101 and can't solder. As long as the person is not worried about that crazy power drain of course. That was nearly double the 101 at full brightness. Add an old battery and a flash cart to that and you have a GBA that goes into red light after 30 minutes.

    clearly these fakes/aftermarket IPS lcd look better than AGS 101 IMO. Me and my brother have put our AGS 101's against these funnyplaying/IPS lcds and we just cant believe how much more vibrant, better picture image, clarity, the image is just so crisp and the brightness/contrast is so much better. I get that there will be many that will still prefer the AGS 101, but i am never looking back. However this clone "Ags 101 " lcd really is an IPS fitted into AGS 101 shell, its beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

    Here is a video showing the problem I described in the previous comment: ruclips.net/video/MVS-FnAvyco/видео.html
    Pay attention to the 0:29 at F-Zero main menu, 1:08 when loading Zelda: ALTTP and 1:23 when loading the Zelda:ALTTP game. You can see part of the F-Zero map circuit on screen still.
    This ghosting disappears after a few minutes... and is caused by flashing/flickering objects on screen.

    This new "AGS-101" screen actually have a serious problem regarding flashing objects on screen. Try playing any circuit of F-Zero Maximum Velocity and you'll see and understand what happens after you load another circuit. The previous circuit map keeps flashing on screen (i.e. ghosting effect).
    I wonder if you could maybe figure a solution for this problem.

    • @makho
      @makho  4 года назад +2

      it's not a problem, it's working as intended. Blame the game devs or even Nintendo.
      This was a trick used by devs to make objects transparent on-screen. Since the pixel response time on OEM hardware is complete garbage, devs found it took fewer resources to just flash something on and off instead of making a transparent version.

    • @yannv95
      @yannv95 4 года назад +3

      @@makho Actually I'm talking about a weird ghosting that happens when something flashes too quickly, it persists flashing on screen for a few minutes even if you leave the game. It only happens with this specific model of the screen. Here are some pictures: imgur.com/a/uyYKKFO.
      I tested both on an original GBA and a AGS-101 motherboard and both give the same results.

    I don't like the cable adapter thing, your are right, they could of just built in the adapter thing to begin with. I think they opted not to because they wanted to just make 1 lcd model, otherwise they would have to made 3 models : 1 for AGB 32 pin 1 for 40 pin and 1 for AGS. What is really nice is that little to no soldering is require. Now it makes me wonder how brightness control would work on a AGB though...

  • @madesmad9935
    @madesmad9935 3 года назад +1

    NIce! this clone screen is less battery consuming comparing to the "normal" IPS screen (funnypaying and one chip v2). I'm not sure if I can use it with the AGB (no SP) though. What do you think? I'm not really aware about all the milliamps / voltage ratio. but seems that 100 milliamps (clone consumig) is less than what you measured on the Funnyplaying screen (between 185-430 depend on brightness), but maybe is just because voltage on the GBA SP is not the same as on the GBA. Any advise?
