    I just binged these videos and could not stop! This is a godsend to me as i was in the process of trying my hand at a costume (a super ambitious one to a virgin self made cosplay) when I found this and this gave me all the inspiration and a perfect teaching of what I need to do! Thank you!

    Hi Dan - just wanted to let you know that my granddaughter (she's 8 years old) and I (I'm 70) used your techniques to build a lizard recently. And what fun we had, She has taken it to school to show her class - she is very proud of it. Thanks for showing us your talent.

      I'm very glad you think like that, you really are a fantastic artist while not being one of those snobby "Just TRY to get as good as me" people...I can see that you really want people to enjoy paper mache as much as you do and with an attitude like yours...I think it's easily possible. I'm a fumbleton, it took me two hours just to tape some newspapers to a polystyrene board for the workbench... but I'll start making things soon because of you :D

      GourmetPaperMache Thank you very much, ever since my first comment I've set up a small workbench and started several projects, I'm having a fantastic time, and I've converted my girlfriend to this craft too, now we both catch ourselves looking around idly for stuff we can use, and if I get a chance, any chance, I'll spread the word about paper mache. It's an amazing artform and the most easily accessed, if not the ONLY easily available form of sculpture. I've started work on an Ood mask but since I don't have wireform or clothes hangers, I've used some thin, but VERY strong paper tubes rolled on bamboo skewers. Do you ever use those?
      I'll do all I can to make paper mache be known around me, you can count on that :)
      Thank you, Dan, for introducing me to it.

      You are very welcome! I'm glad that you have discovered this art form (and converted your girlfriend as well). I haven't used the tubes you mentioned. Sounds like you are a very creative and resourceful person to begin with. Good luck and have fun!

      What a nice note Shari! You made my day. Thank you for taking the time to write. Because you did I will tell you one thing I would change. When you make the initial impression of your face don't make it really tight. Everything shrinks a little as it dries and so it got a little too tight on my face by the time I added some padding. So when you use the wire (or aluminum foil or whatever) leave it a little bit loose.
      Good luck to you! And thanks again for your kind words.
      Dan

      @mama-cant-dance 10 лет назад

      O.K.! Thanks for letting me know that. I actually just made a pretty neat mask for an upcoming show here in Gloucester, Virginia called "Broadway Babes". It's just a small show to raise some money for a local women's shelter. The mask is more like a Muppet head, complete with mouth, nose, ears with earrings, eyes with long lashes and a wig for hair. I used plastic dowel joints (the ones for jointed Teddy bears) to make the jaw able to move because she's going to be singing a song in the show. I lined mine and it did get snug in there once I did that. It also got very hot inside with the padding. I probably need more ventilation up through the mouth area so the poor lady who has to wear it can breath. FYI, I would not have been able to make the mask turn out as well as it did if I had not seen your technique of making the face mold using the wire mesh. Thanks again for all your tips and your amazing, informative videos. They are very much appreciated!

    awesome. just what i was looking for. i'm a woodcarver and after trying a few in wood....too heavy and too hard...anyway, in woodcarving and other wood work people call 'black washing' stuff like patina or vintage treatment...something to suggest it's old because that's what's been cool in wood work..anyway, i was reading a book from the 70's (yeah, an actual book) and then they just used these techniques for the contrast and complexity. they called it 'glazing'....but now days the word doesn't sound right...anyway. you should check out 'shawn cipa' especially his fantasy work. his painting and treatments are just amazing.
    sorry to talk your ear off. but really enjoyed the videos. i know what it takes to make them and i appreciate you sharing it.

      Thanks for the comments. I appreciate everything you mentioned. Yes, I know that the process of applying paint or stain and then wiping it off is called many things. I called it blackwashing for simplicity. I use use black paint with water added almost exclusively after my initial painting. It pulls out the details perfectly. Either way, the idea works.
      Good luck with your work!

    There I was, innocently searching for vintage Halloween paper mache folk art when I stumbled upon the devil himself. This was amazing! I've LOVED Legend since I was a kid and always thought Darkness was such a cool character. Helps that he was played by Tim Curry, but that might be my 80's kid upbringing showing. I'm thinking about making a version of this I can hang on the wall like a trophy as a Halloween decoration. Thank you so much for sharing this! Definitely putting cloth mache in my repertoire of craft skills. 😈

    A great set of tutorials... thank you. Still way above my skill level but I'll start small and end up with a project like this. Unfortunately, I believe the dragons will always be beyond me, but I've still got a load of your videos to watch so maybe one day :)

      Thank you for the nice remarks! I have to say that there are many people who didn't think they could make a dragon, who once they got going, found that they could. It's just doing it small step at a time. There is much evidence of this on my website under "Your Paper Mache." Many of the projects there are first attempts by people who just followed the steps outlined on my blog or on my videos or books. Just sayin.. . Take care

    Hi, I have tried this, and it worked amazing! The only thing I wanted to ask: In some areas I am left with some cuttings and ends of the cloth that I have used. Looking at your masks, they seem quite smooth, so I wanted to ask whether its just pasting technique or whether you also sand paper them or similar? Thanks!

    • @Gourmetpapermache
      @Gourmetpapermache  9 лет назад

      +Marco DS
      Hi Marco. I tear the cloth which helps hold the edges down. I also use the oldest, most worn sheets I can find. Also, I do not dilute the glue. Finally, if all else fails, you can use a sharp knife and cut off the parts of the dried cloth that stick up. Then patch using smaller pieces or cloth. Thanks for the note. Good luck!

    What kind of paint brushes do you use? what sizes of paint brushes work for a project like this? Also for the cloth to wipe away the black-wash- what kind of cloth is it? Do you wash this cloth later or is it ok to leave paint on it if you want to use that same cloth for other projects?

    • @Gourmetpapermache
      @Gourmetpapermache  10 лет назад

      I often buy the really cheap, wood handled 1 inch brushes at Home Depot for the initial painting. For details I use art brushes. You can also find sets of those at Home Depot as well. I use an old rag for the blackwash. After I'm done I just rinse it out real well and let dry. I use the same cloth over and over.
      Good luck!

    Just gave me inspiration for a project I'm working on. My question is in regards to that pumpkin that was on the shelf in the background. If I wanted to make a mask that used this wire mesh method, but was shaped like that pumpkin, what would be the best way to build the surrounding bulk to match that round shape? Would you recommend paper or foil? Which would be lighter weight?

    • @Gourmetpapermache
      @Gourmetpapermache  9 лет назад

      Hello Robert. I would mache the balls and then pull out the wads of paper when it is dry, leaving the shell. Good luck.

    This is *exactly* what I was looking for! This tutorial is so perfect!!! I'm super excited to try making this! One question: Would it be overly complicated to create extra room in the mask for a headset? I will be using this as part of a costume for a scene I'm presenting in my theatre class and would love to use a voice changer to make myself sound particularly devilish! :P How would I secure the mask to my head if there's wiggle room / it's loose? Would I add a strap of some kind? Thank you so much in advance! :D

    • @Gourmetpapermache
      @Gourmetpapermache  10 лет назад

      Hi there. There isn't a lot of wiggle room if you use the wire. In fact, now that it's done, I'd advice to make it a less tight. If you want earphones or anything else built in, then wear those when you make the impression with wire. By the way, aluminum foil works well for that stage as well. You won't need a strap I don't think. But you can always add that at the end.
      Good luck!

    Love it! Two questions. 1. Could the teeth be made from cloth / tape / aluminum, instead of clay, and 2. Would the mask need a protective clear-coating ?

    • @Gourmetpapermache
      @Gourmetpapermache  9 лет назад +1

      Steve Smith
      Yes, you could make the teeth out of anything. I'm not sure why you want the clear coating. It would make the mask high gloss, which I think detracts from the paint job. And the all purpose paint seals as well as the clear plastic.

    Hi Dan! I've been trying to figure out a way to make a pair of deer antlers for me to wear as part of a costume and I think your cloth/paper mache method would work great, but I'm an amateur on the subject and was wondering if you could maybe do a tutorial on it. You would be finished with your project by the time I could get a tutorial out. But this would definitely be the way to go for making the antlers, although I don't know how they should attach to your head. I'd have to think about that. Give it a try. You have nothing to lose.

    Well Dan-the-Monster-Man, I can tell you your videos are absolutely helpful in my opinion! I followed the first video up to the point where I had the basic mask clothed up and made eyes and nose (no mouth because Sauron doesn't eat). Like I said previously in another one of these videos, instead of the Legend Mask, I decided on LOTR Sauron's Helm - and now, after a bunch of dog treats later for my dog Vada and a little ingenuity - I am at the final stage, Painting!! I will send you the photos via email and show you my very first attempt at Mache using cloth, or any material for that matter; and you can decide if I paid attention! You are a great inspiration to many artists! &^D....

    How does the cloth base mache do exposed to the outdoors, or just getting wet in general? Like having a dragon as a garden decoration, or wearing the mask on a rainy day. If it doesn't do well have you used, or know of, a coating that might make it more resistant to elements? I just bought one of your books and have been saving up sheets i've found at thrift shops to get my own projects started!

    About the blackwashing, how come the red paint didn't get 'thinned' and mixed with the black colour,seeing that all the paints used were water-based?

    • @Gourmetpapermache

      I waited until the red paint was dry before I did the blackwashing. There is no problem so long as the initial paint job is dry.

    The "blackwashing" works great on any sculptures, not just paper mache. I use it when I work with polymer clay, and it really gives the art that extra oomph and awesomeness. It's super quick and makes anything look 1000x better.
    If you wanna try something awesome with a black sculpture, try doing this process with white to get a negative effect too. But you can do this with any color that is darker or lighter than the color of your sculpture, really.

    • @Gourmetpapermache
      @Gourmetpapermache  8 лет назад

      Yes, this is also called "antiquing". They use this method with wood furniture. I have used many color washes. It always adds dimension.

      You could brush on some polyurethane, or a water based sealer. That would add a shine. You probably used flat paint. You could dry brush on some semi-gloss or gloss highlights.

I got mine at Home Depot, but I guess they don't always carry the same things store to store. You can get it online here (www.dickblick.com/products/amaco-wireform-mesh/) if you don't find it at Lowes. Btw, thick aluminum foil will work too. Also, just because you are so nice, I'll give you a hint. I found that everything shrinks a bit as it dries. So when you make the impression on your face, dont' make it super tight. Leave a little room.

    Hey! I watched all of the tutorials and I think this is incredible. I want to make something using this process but I plan to make my own beast. I don't know if you have ever heard of Cthulhu by HP Lovecraft but he's half squid, half human and half dragon. I want to make my own mask! I'm so happy I found this :D!

      Thank you Micheal. I'm glad you found them useful. I do know of Cthulhu. That would be a great project. Good luck!

    do you seal your work with some kind of spray to protect and waterproof it?

      If you are going to wear a mask for a night then nothing more than painting is needed. In fact, painting with "exterior" grade paint would offer quite a bit of weatherproofing. However, it's a totally different matter if you want a permanent display outdoors. Over time, the paper will degrade no matter the sealant.
      Thanks for your interest

    GourmetPaperMache Where do you go to get all the wire hangers? I want to make my own dragons for a puppet show.

      I get mine at thrift stores or online. There are many on Ebay. And just ask people. Most still have wire clothes hangers in their closets. Good luck!

      GourmetPaperMache Thanks for getting back to me. Been looking around for them. Found this: 16" Caped Hanger 14.5Ga - Gold/Plain - 500/cs for $39.00 - is that a good price? Good amount to start with? And do you have any idea what "cs" stands for?

      Tying Tubes
      My guess is that cs stands for "case". They are selling 500 per case. I don't know if that is the very cheapest you could find. It sounds very reasonable to me. Then again, I use a lot of hangers. You probably only need 6 or 7 for one dragon.
