  • ~8th Alarm~
    Date: 4/6/2021
    Location: 34th Avenue near 89th Street Queens.
    The thick smoke was billowing down the 6th floor hallway and had started to force itself out the apartment windows. Around 1pm multiple 911 calls were received reporting a fire in an apartment building on 34th Avenue in Jackson Heights. Ladder 154 radioed Queens dispatchers with an urgent message, "10-75, top floor fire k". Engine companies quickly reached the top floor and extinguished the main body of fire. The Chief of the 14th Division however noticed a worsening smoke condition from the street and radioed to the 49 Battalion to check it out. The 49 quickly got back to the 14 confirming that the fire had reached the cockloft. For the next 10 hours and 8 alarms the fire would ravage the building. Difficult to reach pockets of fire along with heavy heat and smoke made this a tough battle. Nearly 11 hours later, with Fire Commissioner Nigro having been on scene for a time, the fire would finally be placed Under Control.

    After watching hundreds of videos never understood why it sometimes takes USA firefighters 5 to 15 mins to get water on a fire, in UK they hit a fire with water in 10 to 20 seconds of arrival on scene

    • @tjhanlonjr
      @tjhanlonjr 2 года назад +2

      In these apartments you have to know where the fire is before you spray, also have to set up engines to a water supply. It takes time. Venting the roof you don't want to spray someone in the face who is up there with a chainsaw or k2

      @@tjhanlonjr Folks don't seem to understand. NYFD has it under control. Like I said earlier, the fire was on the inside of the walls. People think Firefighter have magic wands.

      @@tjhanlonjr . . . how true - it doesn't help to blast water on a roof in queens while the fire is in the bronx . . . and to figure all this out takes some 10 to 20 minutes . . .

    At about the 3 minute Mark someone says the main body of fire is knocked down. Also only smoke in the cockloft

    • @BIGDROC99
      @BIGDROC99 3 года назад +2

      Correct. The main body of fire in the original fire apartment was knocked down. However, the fire had extended to the cockloft. Emphasis on “main body”
      That doesn’t mean that there wasn’t fire anywhere else. The main body is referring to the visible fire upon entering the original fire apartment.

    Not knocking FDNY but why with all of that manpower was the fire able to progress at that rate? Honestly there is probably a lot of information that is not given here. They seem to be going defensive for the most part so there may have been conditions preventing the firefighters from going offensive. Anyway, stay safe and you guys are awesome!

    Don't they have building regulations in USA? Every building seems to be built out of highly flammable materials then most houses are clad in plastic, you would think there would be a public, fire service and government outrage, most Americans houses made of wood clad in highly flammable plastic
