Location: Bruckner Blvd, Bronx.
Firefighters in the Bronx battled a stubborn fire in a commercial building Monday afternoon with operations lasting until Tuesday morning. Shortly after arrival FDNY Chiefs determined the fire had already advanced and filled the structure with floor to ceiling smoke. They determined conditions inside the structure were too dangerous and ordered all firefighters out of the building. The fire would be fought using exterior operation that included multiple Tower Ladders, hand lines from neighboring roofs, and multiversals.
The logistics on these long duration heavy fire load incidents is just overwhelming.. Was on several in my 32 years.... Great job as always FDNY and great video
Nothing beats watching several FDNY Tower Ladders working. Miss the days you’d see the Satellites working a fire like this.
That would be awesome to see ! Ive never seen a Satellite going to work unfortunately.
Chief Burgess did an outstanding job. Teaching & keeping his men safe! Leadership.
It was incredible to watch.
Thanks pal, all credit goes to the crew working that day
Never a shortage of manpower.
Just a shortage of water.
union strong always has the manpower!
18 hours, what they carry and do, that's a lot of shift rotations
Excellent video CityStreets, thank you
Thanks BlueBins !!
Hat off to all. Shout out to Chief Burgess.
Outstanding coverage!
Glad you enjoyed it!
NYC has so many buildings like this. I’m surprised there aren’t more like this everyday. Old electrical wiring and old highly flammable wood - winning combination for multi alarm fires.
I have a question....when FDNY sets up an aerial device, how come I never see a ground plate used in conjuction with the outriggers?
They have them on the rig but we never use them. At least I never did. It might take another body to place them and we just don’t have the time or manpower to waste.
@@DC-ih8bv OK I was just wondering. Where I retired from the driver was required to put the plates on the ground. But that is what my dept. did. Thank you for answering. Can I ask you some other questions about FDNY pumpers and squads?
Lee Hart We would use them sometimes when drilling or maybe on certain uneven pavement but rare. Yes you can ask me..
@@DC-ih8bv "don't have manpower to waste"?? Are you kidding me?? 100+ firefighters standing around....
Ron D everyone has a position and a job. Though it seems standing around everyone is just position ready. I don’t ever remember them being used maybe in drill as directed by officer.
How many firemen does it take to fight a fire? 8
And 30 to stand about.
bronx firemen always so polite!!
Love these videos but cant help to show flaws. First ladder up had no hose attached with power nozzle, and not one hose prerigged on it to use on a roof.
thanks for sharing vid, nice catch of BC teaching Prob, thankfully an ample water supply or whole entire square blocks would have been afire, stay safe be safe....Scott
It was awesome to watch. Thanks Scott.
For the uninitiated: what is a multiversal?
A multiversal is basically a powerful hose nozzle set up on a metal base that can spray water for prolonged periods of time without someone having to hold a hose. You can see them in operation at 28:00
@@citystreets7871 Thanks!
Here in Los Angeles they call them "portable monitors."
Just after the 17 minute mark, a ff was carrying 2 green items. Can anyone tell me what they are?
I think it’s rope so they can secure the monitor in place.
Other comment is correct. At the 28 minute mark you can see the rope around each ground monitor. They have spikes on the legs to "dig in" but they aren't more than an inch long. All that pressure and they can start to "walk" on you and then flip if not careful.
I'm just curious what was burning to take 18hrs to fight the fire?
Sooo, would multi-versal be like a bltz- fre?
Why does it seem like they always have dozens of guys standing around not doing anything?
They have them all inhale at once to deprive the fire of oxygen. BOOM!! Fire out. With as many connected buildings in the city and how close they are, if you let the fire get away from you, you can lose the block rather quickly. Get hands on scene sooner rather than later. Better to have them and turn them away then be constantly calling in resources. With travel time, each alarm has further to respond and you'll never get ahead. I don't know their SOG, but after at least 1 bottle through the fire (about 15-20min) or 2, guys should be in rehab for rest and hydration.
That is not the problem, but their position! Down wind, in the smoke, not wearing their masks.....
If you have back up teams, at least take a healthy station area. These guys will have a high CO level before they even have done anything
A coach doesn't send his whole team on the field at once. You have to have back ups for those who get injured or exhausted.Same with firefighting.
FDNY always has relief Firefighters on scene so once one company runs out of air the next group immediately goes in. Once the second group goes in a 3rd will be called and will wait outside to relieve the 2nd group and this continues.
@@garyhess7439 and here the coach leaves his reserve team wait in front of the building inhaling toxic fumes. Watch the video, after several minutes you see members backing out, and later even yellow tape was placed. Why was that you think?
Why did the bucket stop spraying water?...Is that a tactic or did they lose pressure?
at what point in the video did you see that?

....Around 20:11
With all the special departments in the fire department. You would think they would have antonyms tracked equipment to go inside buildings like this
Interesting idea.

Tokyo fire has half ton little remote controlled tanks with monitors for guns and can drag 600 meter of 100 mm hose behind it. A fair number of them saw action at the Fukushima chemical fires and nuclear power plant disasters after the massive earthquake
@@ph11p3540 thanks for information
What is a multiversal, please?
Hi James, a multiversal is like a powerful hose nozzle set up on a tripod. It can be placed down somewhere and shoot water for hours without someone having to hold it.
Some departments call them ground monitors.
28.06 on the video, good shot of it.
You would think somebody would be able to start moving trucks out of the so fed can get a better attack and would also mean less for the fire to burn
thx! we need more Lincolns
Lincolns?
Great Capture.....
Thanks very much !
The ignorance of some of the quote armchair Chiefs of Department in this place is downright appalling.
Multi Versatile? Old school FDNY lingo.
They are called STANG UNITS
not a fire fighter but glad higher ups did not send them in to that 100 year or more tinder box
Why three people on top of the ladder ??
They are in a “bucket” with a strong water cannon that puts out the fire.
Why not ? Four or Five Firefighters would be too tight, no room for a rescue !
Very nice video plus other camera person was down there video of the fire!!
Thank you very much ! Yes there were many photographers at this fire.
Who is the old guy at 4:09?
Not sure lol
Great coverage!
Thanks John.
What a sham! No water on the fire until it is our of control! I don't want any firefighters to get hurt, but why did the first ladder truck take its ladder down? Why were so many firefighters just standing around? Why did it take so long to get water to the trucks? Why weren't hand lines taken into the building? Is the NYFD taking too strong of a position to protecting their personnel instead of protecting the public? I am just a lay person in this. Enlighten me.
First, it's obvious this video starts well after the fire had started and first units were on scene so we don't see what was going on prior to the start of the video. If you watch again, you will see a line connected to the FDC (fire department connection) which is adding extra to the sprinkler system. If ladders are up spraying then the fire has gone through the roof and you don't spray water down on guys and steam them or knock them on their asses. If the fire went thought the roof and the sprinklers didn't hold it, it may have been above the sprinkers, meaning the fire was higher than the heads and they couldn't do their job of controling the fire. A ladder company has multiple jobs which takes 4-5 crew members, generally search and ventilation. When in defensive mode some of those tasks are not done or done differently but the crew size is the same, so you may get a few guys (per truck) not doing something the whole time. Plus you always need reserves for when each crew gets tired. SOGs usually send crews to rehab after one bottle change (15 mins of work per SCBA bottle, so 15-25 min), thus if there is active firefighting for an hour, that's 3 crews on one task.
The building construction didn't allow for firefighters to cut holes into the roof from my understanding. This led to the building immediately filling with deadly smoke. Very early on Chief's called all firefighters to leave the building and commence outside operations. I explain this in the description.
City Streets is correct. Bow String Truss construction. Lots of interesting reading material on the subject.
The roof was flagged as a no go.
So where's the battle? Everyone stands and watching
They went from interior ops to defensive so the manpower was needed and with defensive ops not as much is needed but the rigs and equipment still is. But hey it’s ok if you don’t understand
No way isn’t that smoke non cancerous
All second hand smoke is potentially cancerous. The more solvents, burned polymers and heavy metal molecules in the smoke the more cancerous it is. From cigarette smoke to massive building fires, all can cause cancer when enough is breathed in cumulatively.
Great coverage they need to be wear there masks out side that smoke 💨 looks dodgy hate to think what there breathing in does seem to be loads firemen 🚒👩🚒🧑🚒🔥stay safe
Glad you enjoyed the footage !
5:28 turn off the sprinkler alarm. There's a ball valve right behind the wall. wtf is wrong with these people?
There was probably no one on the scene that has done as much fire duty as you have.
@@azul8811 Well that's pretty scary because I'm not even a fire fighter but I know how to silence an alarm schmuck
@@jebj1 You're not even a firefighter? Golly, I had no idea!!! Could have fooled me. I thought you had won the James Gordon Bennett.
@@azul8811 So what do you do for a living other than make sarcastic comments on youtube? I'll bet you're a fireman and that's why you can't take the smallest bit of criticism even if it's only about silencing a sprinkler alarm.
@@jebj1 Actually, I'm a yak herder by trade but I've been out of work due to Covid19. I've been passing my time by commenting on critical posts here on YT. I've discovered that critics usually don't receive criticism well.
Where are the HERO'S THESE DAYS.Amaxing how they leave it to the tower ladder to cover for THEIR LAZINESS.IF I WAS THE CHIEF I'D BE GOING IN MYSELF TO DEMONSTRATE HOW ITS DONE. 🤔 😳
The description clearly states the building was filled with smoke ceiling to floor and pulled everybody out. Lives over property...good idea.
@@mothermarylspeaking8989 I must have missed it.
I have always wondered why they could not use an RPG to open a roof like this. Doesn't need an explosive head, but maybe an inert steel projectile with a pointed head.
I really like that idea. RPG shot from the Tower Ladder.
@Tim Burm1 Well, no you did not read my comment. This RPG would have no explosive, it would just be an inert projectile. It could punch holes in the ceiling or the walls and people would not put at risk to open the roof.
@Tim Burm1 Care must always be taken with firefighting. The use of towers is very dangerous. They will not use them if anybody is in the building. Same thing with these. They must be used with care. Fire Departments know how to take care with their equipment and its use.
Rosenbauer have their AT Stinger appliance, it has a 'Piercing Tool ' on a telescopic boom - HRET (High Reach Extendable Turret),you can feed water spray through the tool.
BAck in the eighties, there was an explosive charge available for roof opening. You just laid out this long sock full of ???, stuck a blasting cap into it and stood back while it went boom. Of course, giving explosives to firefighters is never a good idea because we like to experiment and sometimes even play pranks on one another...
Uesing deck gun and tower ladders up it out 👨🚒🚒🚨🇺🇸
Great footage, what a big fire. I see 44 tower ladder in many videos, must be a very busy firehouse. The men and women that make up the NYFD as well as the paramedic teams are truly amazing people, if I could go back in time I would definitely tried to join this amazing organization.
Thank you very much, and until we have time machines you can enjoy the footage =).
138 Bucket doesn't have any water. What's the deal?
They stopped water flow once or twice to re position.
Impressive smoke conditions...38:44 what a nice still shot (photograph) that would be, two tower ladders in operation popping through the smoke...
firelensman You’re right - I just took a couple of screen prints around 38.44. Great shots.
How many firefighters responded to the fire
great footage !
Thanks Patrick, glad you enjoyed !
Might seem silly, but would they stat calling in units from other burroughs to assist?
They definitely would and they did during this fire. Ladder 138 is from Queens and worked a lot at this fire.
Why don't they ever get the cars moved

Must be a empty ware house
If itvwas empty wouldn't be nothing to burn that long
Full furniture warehouse. They had it controlled in 5 hours
@@be5575 oh ok thanks for telling me
10% working , 90% looking important.
Kicked out of the academy eh?
Brad E -The badge shows Captain, thanks 🙏.
@@Polarbear5353 Then you should know how fire operations work?
Brad E - Exactly ..... You call this a good operation? Too many personnel , everyone is stepping over each other. Improper gear, lack of SCBA protection etc. A complete operational mess. Sorry brother too many people show up to wear the T-shirt on this battle. Not going to argue with a dude on RUclips over it. Trust me - operationally we all looked at this yesterday and shook our heads at the chaos. If you don’t see that, then you’re part of the problem . Sorry if that offends you but it’s the truth.
@@Polarbear5353 Alright. Just remember. This building is 50,000sq ft. 2 story furniture warehouse fully involved. 140 fireman fought this fire and 33 units they had it controlled and out in 5 hours including overhaul. NFPA standards witch FDNY follows say no less than 15 guys on initial attack for a 2,000 sqft building, do the math. Also idk how your dept works we run 2 scba tanks and your out for rehab. Rotate your men, And rehab. You also need to consider RIT teams, they figure it takes 12 men to save 1 down man. I'm not sure if you have ever fought a warehouse fire but the last one we had was a 50,000 sqft storage building. took 26 hours 220 men and 47 fire depts from 2 states and pumped 2 million gallons of water. So you're wrong and sorry if that hurt your feelings. But that's probably why you wear a red helmet and not a white helmet.
Lots of people all standing about , not doing much.
Get out of here dude you’re talking about the best fire department is the United States. If you knew anything about firefighting or the FDNY you would realize how stupid this comment is.
The bosses transitioned to an outside operation. After the Tower Ladders were set up they began to release companies so they could go back to their houses.
B.j Mcwhattabloke It only looks that way to you, they are waiting for an assignment or re-assignmrnt, then off to work...If 100 Firefighters were running around at one time for 18 hours straight to make you happy, they'd be bumping into each other, all tired and out of breath, not getting thier turn putting the fire out. Back to the armchair you warrior you !
I knoe that area well im from bx
Nice ! Smoke was so bad they had to shut down the Bruckner.
3:00 do they have busses to bring the spectators in ? 😂 If everyone who is doing nothing would grab a bucket of water they can have this fire out before morning tea. 😜
