From other such games, you ought to stockpile the natural resources near your base, and clear cut for a clear field of view.
Maybe build a wall around your base, maybe a big base like on The Front.

No, I don't think it does, but that may be coming in the future. I am just going off of what I have read and seen on Steam. Hope that helps;)
