  • Powder Keg opened in 2005. S&S converted the former Buzzsaw Falls (Premier Rides prototype liquid coaster) into an all-new coaster for $10 million. Powder Keg kept the old coaster section and lift hill of Buzzsaw Falls, but everything else is new. This coaster includes a compressed air launch, several airtime hills, and some odd design quirks. But is it good? Find out in this review!

I grew up going to Silver Dollar city, so I remember well the anticipation of Buzzsaw Falls opening in 1999. It was a very fun ride, and I personally don’t remember it being closed all that often.
I definitely remember that if you sat in the backseat, water would pour in over the back of the boat and you would get drenched. I also remember watching the water rush to the back of the boat as you were climbing the lift hill and hearing it go out the back through some drains.
But I was also extremely excited when they opened Powder Keg, and I am always glad to get a ride on it when the line’s not too long. I do love that they kept an old Buzzsaw Falls boat As part of the theming for Powder Keg. When it first opened, there were actually two water troughs on either side after that lift hill, and I think there were even jets that sprayed as you went through that area. I think I remember even during the first year or two of operation for Powder Keg that the water would still run through the old troughs.

This was my 50th credit and certainly an amazing ride. One of the things I love about it is how you can tell the difference between old BuzzSaw Falls parts of the ride, and the new Powder Keg parts. Some good examples are the different track designs, the remaining trots and concrete structures from BuzzSaw Falls, the old track and train props, and the station.

You know what’s really fun about this coaster at night? When you launch the camera takes tons of pictures. In the front, it blinds you and you can’t see for about 10 seconds. It’s insane!

Great review! This coaster definitely doesn't get the love it deserves. So far, that launch is the most forceful launch that i've been on (which will hopefully change when I go to Cedar Point for the first time this June) Silver Dollar City has a terrific lineup with wonderful theming and a *Marvel*ous setting. I'm going this Friday and I can't wait to ride this and the other rides again!

I agree that the launch feels more powerful than the stats would suggest. I appreciate the variety in this ride. It's a solid # 3 in the park for me. It was my mom's favorite, but my love for Outlaw Run has influenced her. That backwards spike is also mangled at the top, as if it had exploded.
In regards to rain, that's tricky, because in my experience, it rains every day here. I finally got some rare night rides on all of the top 4 coasters during the ACE event last November, before the 2nd storm of the day arrived. I could see the approaching lightning while going over the 1st camelback. I could not see the tornado. Other guests knew it was coming, which is why even Powder Keg was a walk-on.

    • @CanobieCoaster

To the park's credit, they'll reopen Powder Keg even if it's just for a short time when the rain lets up.

I was able to ride Buzz Saw Falls, it was a pretty cool concept but I remember even as a 10 year old I wanted it to be more thrilling. At the time the only other roller coasters were Thunderation and Fire in the Hole. Got my wish 2 years later with Wild Fire, and that to me was when SDC really took a step into the direction that would lead it to its amazing status that it holds today.

I wouldn't be surprised if Premier was initially consulted for the renovation. They already had experience with spikes and transfer tables with the Chiller and Mr. Freeze clones so I could see SDC engineers working with Premier for the initial layout but maybe SDC backed out due to the inefficiency of the LIM launch. S&S was just breaking in to the coaster business with the buyout of Arrow's remaining assets and the hiring of Denise Dinn to run a wood coaster division, they were probably hungry for such a project and eager to apply their pneumatic launch to a more traditional coaster design. Either way, Premier was definitely taking notes because that transfer table and spike look very much like what we're seeing with Ice Breaker.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  3 года назад

Good point Premier already had the transfer track and spikes. It's possible the LIM launch issues Chiller and Mr. Freeze had scared them away.

Even though early May 1999 was my last season to go to SDC till 2013ish and I grew up nearby to SDC. I do not remember Buzzsaw Falls at all besides the talks of it from this coaster.
The padding between the legs could be an issue for people with longer/thicker legs, but to that this is much better than Outlaw Runs lap/shin bars. Will also say that padding is most likely there so the 42-inch requirement can exist.
This is either my number 1 or 2 at the park, with Time Traveler.
PS: I have never figured out why amusement parks/riders find the front seat so important. I get it looks better visually sometimes, but give me the back for air time any day of any year.

I rode this ride as a kid before I got into coasters. I remember loving it, especially that powerful launch, but I am worried that having ridden 285 coasters and being a hardcore enthusiast it'll loose it's luster when I eventually get back on it (I mean holy crap, Outlaw Run and Time Traveler, I wasn't tall enough for Wildfire, there's a lot of coasters I need to pick up at SDC) from what I thought about it as one of my first 20 credits (ex as much as I love Phantom's Revenge it has lost a lot of luster from when it was my 6th ever coaster ridden. Still a very elite coaster but I don't think the perception of that ride from the point of view of a 7 year old only tall enough with shoes is physically possible to create from an adult perspective). This review tells me I may have actually underrated Powder Keg as a kid, the only thing I remember in great detail reguarding the forces on the ride is that the launch felt very extreme and I loved it. Now that I appreciate things like airtime I may even enjoy it more as an adult.
