  • The doctrine of justification by faith alone was at the center of the Reformation debates. The Reformers declared that justification is by faith alone, not by faith and works. The biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone is essential to the Gospel. In this message, Dr. R.C. Sproul will explain why this doctrine is essential, and warn against any perversions of it.

Really? You’re so deceived. You sound like a “name it and claim it” evangelical. Listen to the Words of Christ:
      Matthew 22:
8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.
9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
You should humbly seek the LORD. PRAY that you are chosen. You may be invited, but will you be wearing the correct clothes? I sincerely want to be…so should you.
Christ, and His followers, walk in the path of humility. God help me!

Keep in mind that the sacrifices of Christ is sufficient. The declaration of justification is by Faith alone as our Father Abraham experienced it and can never be by any good works.
The justifying faith is accompanied by good works as explained in James 2:14.
Rom 5:1 says having been justified by Faith in Christ, we have peace with God.
We cannot compromise on this great truth. God justifies the wicked through Faith because of Christ perfect work. Amen

The whole world received the chance at salvation because of Abrahams obedience. Faith without obedience is dead. We enter the kingdom only if we obey his commandments, Rev 22. Genesis 22:18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
Abraham believed in God and that belief was to love him and obey him, that was his faith. That is what God demands of us. Never of works but out of love. You can't even be saved without obedience. God commands us to believe in his Son. Acts 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
      Hebrews 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
Obedience of faith which is love is a requirement of salvation because disobedience is sin, is evil, is wickedness. We can't continue in sin and be saved.

Indeed. When we describe faith, there are many nuances: trust, trustworthiness, belief, obedience, etc. Because we have a multi-pregnant definition, it would be helpful that the OBJECT of faith be pronounced. If that object be Christ, then we have faith as the only act to lay hold. James isn't talking about belief or Trust in Christ, he's talking about the trustworthiness or obedience aspect of faith. Thus not by faith alone. I WISH the Catholic would study philogy. He would understand Scriptures better.

What Christian thinks their good works are something that adds to the finished work of Christ? It is the GRACE of God working in us that produces good works in the first place, for apart from Him we can't do anything good anyway. How else is a Christian supposed to live, by doing bad works or no works at all? Of course we make mistakes along the way, but He knows his sheep, and perpetually provides the grace to repent. So why worry? Why doubt His faithfulness? His mercies ARE new everyday

All these, therefore, were highly honoured, and made great, not for their own sake, or for their own works, or for the righteousness which they wrought, but through the operation of His will. And we, too, being called by His will in Christ Jesus, are not justified by ourselves, nor by our own wisdom, or understanding, or godliness, or works which we have wrought in holiness of heart; but by that faith through which, from the beginning, Almighty God has justified all men; to whom beglory for ever and ever. "even early church father Clement of Rome believed in Soal Fide"
Well no Ggeg. You need to read his writings and not copy and paste. An example or two ... still in Corinthians
Chapter 12, not faith alone or works alone but BOTH.
_On account of her faith _*_and hospitality,_*_ Rahab the harlot was saved_
Chapter 30, justified by .... our works (growing in our justification):
_Seeing, therefore, that we are the portion of the Holy One, let us do all those things which pertain to holiness, avoiding all evil-speaking, all abominable and impure embraces, together with all drunkenness, seeking after change, all abominable lusts, detestable adultery, and execrable pride. For God, [says the Scripture], resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Let us cleave, then, to those to whom grace has been given by God. Let us clothe ourselves with concord and humility, ever exercising self-control, standing far off from all whispering and evil-speaking, _*_being justified by our works_*_ and not our words_
Chapter 35, HOW shall we obtain the reward ? IF ... IF ... IF ... just like St Paul ... IF ... PROVIDED ... OTHERWISE .. YOU TOO SHALL BE CUTOFF.
_But how, beloved, shall this be done? If our understanding be fixed by faith towards God; if we earnestly seek the things which are pleasing and acceptable to Him; if we do the things which are in harmony with His blameless will; and if we follow the way of truth, casting away from us all unrighteousness and iniquity, along with all covetousness, strife, evil practices, deceit, whispering, and evil-speaking, all hatred of God, pride and haughtiness, vain glory and ambition_

I'm always AMAZED, I am ASTONISHED and as R.C. Sproul says at the beginning of this message, how men like him, can say just about every time, that Paul writes this or John says that, referring to what he's at the moment, reading from the Bible.
Then, when he starts his prayer, he is moved to recognize that what he read, is the TRUTH of God to which men rebels against as he's rebelling against each time that he adjudicates it, to a mere man.
Mr. Sproul clearly knew that God and not Paul or any other man is the one that used His secretaries like Paul, to write the Words in the Original Writings of the Bible.
God CLEARLY says and highlights this when He (and not Paul) declares:
"And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with Him in the holy mount.
We have also A MORE SURE WORD OF PROPHECY [The Word of God and not of men]; WHEREUNTO YE DO WELL THAT YE TAKE HEED, AS UNTO A LIGHT [The Word of God and not of men] THAT SHINETH IN A DARK PLACE [in the life of the unsaved], UNTIL THE DAY DAWN, AND THE DAY STAR [or Jesus The Christ] ARISE IN YOUR HEARTS [or minds]:
KNOWING THIS FIRST, THAT NO PROPHECY OF THE SCRIPTURE IS OF ANY PRIVATE INTERPRETATION.
FOR THE PROPHECY CAME NOT IN OLD TIME BY THE WILL OF MAN: BUT HOLY MEN OF GOD SPAKE AS THEY WERE MOVED [or inspired] BY THE HOLY GHOST [or God, so they would proclaim His Word and not the words of men]."
When anyone says that Paul says this, or Luke, Isaiah, Peter, Jeremiah say that, that person is making the Word of the Almighty God, into a word of a simple man.
It does not matter that this man, may be a redeemed sinner, still a man.
    Let's not forget that:
"BUT THOUGH WE, OR AN ANGEL FROM HEAVEN, PREACH ANY OTHER GOSPEL UNTO YOU THAN THAT WHICH WE [through the Words that God and not men] HAVE PREACHED UNTO YOU, LET HIM BE ACCURSED."

Because if you try to please men it will not please the Lord. No act or deed will gain you entry to heaven. So when we come across a denomination that we don't agree with who are we arguing with you who are we trying to please? It's not God it's ourselves because we feel inadequate so we try to blame others for not doing the right thing because we're afraid we aren't doing the right thing. Stop pointing fingers at followers of Christ is tearing us apart

Protestants are soooooo in love with the Bible-----until a Catholic shows them incontrovertible evidence that one of their pet doctrines is wrong, and then they start twisting the Bible into pretzels.
Jesus and His apostle and cousin James were not Old Testament prophets. Jesus came to announce the New Covenant, not just to the Jews but to the whole world, and His apostles were appointed to continue that work. The Gospel is a Gospel of love and without good works there is no love. Intellectual belief (faith) alone is not enough----faith must flower into good works (love).

In Hebrews 10:19-12:29 faith is well described and perseverance as well as discipline in faith.
Endure hardship as discipline … later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it … it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

Justification is achieved only by means of faith in Jesus Christ. And yet, true faith also makes us walk in sanctification and good works. So, the only way to have a just relationship with God is faith in His son. Nevertheless, the true justifying faith; the authentic faith in Jesus Christ leads us to trust only in Him as Saviour, and leads us to live submitting ourselves only to Him as King.
Both Genesis 3.1-4 and John 6.28-29 show this indivisible bond between faith and obedience; if you don't trust God as Saviour, you will not obey Him as King, if you trust Christ as Saviour, you will obey Him as King.
Those who claim to trust Jesus as Saviour, but reject His authority as King are false christians.
That being said, you need to remember Paul teaching on Romans 7; christians will continue to sin until our Redeemer and King comes back. So there is a wrestle that defines christianity between the holiness of our new identity, and the sinfulness of our old identity. So, paraphrasing Spurgeon: "a sheep may fall in the mud, but it is the pig who lives in it". A true christian may fall into sin, but are the non-christians who live in it. The struggle with sin is evidence of true christianity, the absence of struggle (and rather, the submission to sin) is the evidence of ungodliness.

What has always been taught by the Christian faith is that our salvation is a relationship of synergy with God. Faith and repentance are merely the gateway. It is through faith in Jesus Christ that we can be redeemed by the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Re-born) The Holy Spirit of God does not pierce the hardened heart of a sinful man. We cannot 'earn' our salvation. Our works could never be enough to regenerate our soul (re-birth). Yet, to accept God's gift of salvation we must show trust in Him. Obedience is a form of trust. Faith is an action and through our actions we accept God's saving Grace. "It is the inner workings that create the outer works" - John Wesley Not the other way around. Another way to make the point is the words of a man named John Maximovich; "We cannot earn God's grace which is freely offered to everyone. Our works merely manifest God's grace into reality." Peace to you and yours!

"When someone believes in him who justifies the impious, that faith is reckoned as justice to the believer, as David too declares that person blessed whom God has accepted and endowed with righteousness, independently of any righteous actions (Rom 4:5-6). What righteousness is this? The righteousness of faith, preceded by no good works, but with good works as its consequence.”

Actually, sola fide is not false if one understands that faith in Christ means faith in everything Christ taught, including that good works are necessary for salvation (Matthew 25:31-46), including that we must eat His Body and drink His Blood (John 6:48-69), including that priests have the supernatural power to forgive sins (John 20:22-23), including that Purgatory exists (Matthew 5:25-36 and Luke 12:58-59), including that Jesus appointed Peter to be the first pope (Matthew 16:18-19), including that the state of grace can be lost (Matthew 13:3-23), including that Jesus wants babies to be baptized (Matthew 19:14).

“God commands all men everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30) "Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen." (Matthew 22:14) "Not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:" (1 Corinthians 1:26) "For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. Not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence." But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.
    Galatians 1:8-9
It amazes me that as Christians we would be so scared of one man declaring us anathema just because we would depart from HIS gospel. Paul himself declares that he did not immediately confer with flesh and blood (ie. the apostles who walked with Jesus 🙄) who else would be proclaiming a different gospel ?🤔
Shouldn't we have infinitely more reverence and fear for the actual word of God through Moses ?
2 You SHALL NOT ADD TO THE WORD which I command you, NOR TAKE FROM IT, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. 3 Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal Peor; for the LORD your God has destroyed from among you all the men who followed Baal of Peor. 4 But you who held fast to the LORD your God are alive today, every one of you.
    Deuteronomy 4:2-4
How about reverence to the actual words of our Messiah ?
Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I DID NOT COME TO DESTROY BUT THE FULFILL. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 WHOEVER THEREFORE BREAKS ONE OF THE LEAST OF THESE COMMANDMENTS, AND TEACHES men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
    Matthew 5:17-19
And yet we allow one man to take us from under the law ?
And we also allow one man to keep us from following the instructions of our Messiah ?

Sola fide is shown to be false doctrine at Matthew 25:31-46 and James 2:26. Contrary to what Protestantism says Christianity is in part a works based religion.
It is true that works without faith avail us nothing for salvation but once we have faith we are required to do good works. Good works and love are the sane thing and Jesus made it very clear that we must love God and neighbor.

WORKS & PENANCE in the protestant version of the bible: WORKS REV 20:12...The dead are judged BY THEIR WORKS. James 2:18 Faith without works is dead Matt 19:17 Jesus tells us if we want to enter into Life, we must keep the commandments. James 2:24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Philippians 2:12-13 Philippians 1 Philippians 3 Philippians 2:12-13...12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, WORK OUT YOUR OWN SALVATION WITH FEAR AND TREMBLING; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. In Matt 25, JESUS tells us to feed the poor, clothe the naked and do good for others. All this falls under the catagory of doing good works. Luke 16:19-30 The story of Lazarus and the rich man shows us that the rich man went to hell for refusing to help Lazarus who was poor and hungry. (He refused to do good works)
PENANCE: Luke 19:8. Zacchaeus told Jesus if he has cheated anyone, he will repay them 4 times over. Mark 2:20 Jesus said (regarding his disciples): The days are coming when the Bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. Matthew 6:16 When you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrits do

Context, dear friend. James is identifying true faith from false faith; a true believer is justified by a living faith that leads him into good works (James 2.14,18). Those who claim to have been saved and justified by Jesus but don't live under Him as King, they are false believers. That is the point of James, and all historical protestants agree with Him.
Paul, on the other hand is identifying the means by which the men are declared just; that is Faith Alone (Romans 3.28, 4.6, Galatians 2.16, etc.), of course; his justification by faith alone will lead him into a process of sanctification, that is: the just will walk in good works. But that is another issue for Paul and he is not dealing with "what" is true faith, but with "how" is someone declared just in the eyes of God.
So, the simplest logic explanation for this paradox is not that Paul and James are contradicting one another, but that they are talking about two different things, and all christians can agree with both of them. Our justification has been achieved not by means of our works, but only by faith. Nonetheless, the true faith (the only one that can truly justify) is never alone, for it comes with a power to walk us through sanctification and good works to show it's authenticity.
Martin Luther says: "faith is God’s work in us, that changes us and gives new birth from God. (John 1:13). It kills the Old Adam and makes us completely different people. It changes our hearts, our spirits, our thoughts and all our powers. It brings the Holy Spirit with it. Yes, it is a living, creative, active and powerful thing, this faith. Faith cannot help doing good works constantly. It doesn’t stop to ask if good works ought to be done, but before anyone asks, it already has done them and continues to do them without ceasing. Anyone who does not do good works in this manner is an unbeliever. He stumbles around and looks for faith and good works, even though he does not know what faith or good works are."
John Calvin summarizes it like this: "Faith Alone justifies, and nonetheless, this justifying faith is not alone".

Hey John, Diego is correct when he says "Context, context, context". James 2:24 is preceded by James 2:14, "What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can THAT (emphasis mine) faith (i.e. faith that simply claims that it is true, but everything else in its life contradicts the claim that is made) save him?" James reiterates this in verse 17, "So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." Those who genuinely have faith have fruit that accompanies it (Matthew 7:16; John 15:2; etc.). Genuine faith comes to grace empty handed, realizing that it has nothing to offer, but immediately bears the fruit of abiding in Christ Jesus.

Jesus said, at Matthew 25:31-46, that good works are mandatory, so faith in Jesus means faith that good works are necessary for salvation.

*"Faith alone" is NOT sufficient for salvation.* Jesus said "except ye repent, ye shall all
likewise perish" (Luke 13:5). Jesus did NOT tell the disciples to preach "faith alone"; He
told them to preach repentance and remission of sins:
"Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from
    the dead the third day:
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all
nations, beginning at Jerusalem." (Luke 24:45-47)
The apostle Peter made the same point: God wants us to come to repentance, confessing
    and forsaking sin:
"The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is
longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to
    repentance." (2 Peter 3:9)
"He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall
    have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13)
Our sins have separated us from God (Isaiah 59:1,2) and earned death, "For the wages of
    sin is death" (Romans 6:23).
By giving His life, Jesus has made a ransom available (Matt 20:28). With that ransom we
each can now be redeemed from the death penalty already earned for sin. We can have that
mercy, that grace IF we'll turn from sin that earns the death penalty. Otherwise we'll each
surely perish, unsaved from the death penalty we've already earned. That's why Jesus
warned, "except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (Luke 13:5).
IF we'll repent, then we'll have our past sins and the death penalty earned for them blotted
out. Our sins were *NOT* blotted out on the cross:
"Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of
refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19, NKJV).
With the sins that separated us from God blotted out we can begin a new life - a "time of
refreshing" - in "presence of the Lord" through the holy spirit. God gives his spirit "to them
that obey Him" and repent (Acts 5:32, Acts 2:38, Acts 17:30). With Jesus' guidance through
the holy spirit we're made ready, fit, to receive the gift of eternal life and to inherit the
kingdom of God (Heb 12:11; 1 Cor 6:9,10). But it is up to us to choose to continue in
    repentance and abide in Jesus,
    following the spirit:
"For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds
of the body, ye shall live" (Romans 8:13).
"If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather
them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned" (John 15:6).
God wants family - sons and daughters - to live with Him forever. Those sons and daughters
are being created, right now, through Jesus Christ. "As many as I love, I rebuke and
chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent" (Jesus, in Revelation 3:19). He is the potter and
we are the clay. Clay that is not formable or moldable is useless.
Faith alone? "For by grace are ye saved through faith . . . " (Ephesians 2:8). We receive
saving grace *_through_* faith. Not just because we *_have_* faith. *_Through_* faith
you may choose to "come to God" (Hebrews 11:6) on His terms: confessing and forsaking
sin. Without faith you could not make that choice: "But without faith it is impossible to
please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of
them that diligently seek him" (Hebrews 11:6). It's that
choice - to come to God on His
terms - that matters. For *_that_* we receive mercy and saving grace, NOT for "faith
    alone."

    • @TheBibleSays
      @TheBibleSays 5 лет назад +1

Asaph Vapor I agree that we're not saved by works of the law or by good works done for others. But this does not address James 2:24: "Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only."
James was citing Abraham's example. Abraham, through faith, chose to obey God. He left for the promised land and later offered Isaac.
""By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went." (Hebrews 11:8)
Without faith he could not have made that choice, to obey. But even _with_ faith he could have chosen to stay home, preferring the comforts of home. His choice to _act_ on his faith is what made him a _believer._ True believing goes beyond faith alone: believers _act_ on their faith:
"Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only." (James 2:22-24)
Through faith (Eph 2:8) we may choose to obey and "come to God" on His terms, confessing and forsaking sin:
"But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." (Hebrews 11:6)
""He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13)
"And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent" (Acts 17:30)
It is the choice - to come to God on His terms - that matters. Not faith alone. If we'll obey, we are promised mercy. Thanks to Jesus, that includes this grace: redemption from the death penalty already earned for past sins. Without repentance and redemption we will surely perish, paying our own death penalty. That's why Jesus warned, "except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (Luke 13:5).
Does ANYBODY out there think we'll have mercy and grace while choosing to remain in _disobedience_ to God? Jesus is "the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him" (Hebrews 5:9).

    • @TheBibleSays
      @TheBibleSays 5 лет назад

@Asaph Vapor You missed my point, apparently. Nowhere did I "jumble up Jame's teachings to say salvation is by grace plus good works" as you seem to think I said.
Again, Abraham chose to obey. His obedience - leaving for the promised land, and offering Isaac - was *_not_* "good works" done for others. By or through faith Abraham made a choice: to simply obey God. That was his works. That's what made him a believer. That's what justified him to God. Not "faith only":
"But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only." (James 2:20-24)
"Works" means different things in different contexts. Sometimes it's in regards to "works of the law." Sometimes it's "good works" done for others. Sometimes it's simple obedience to God, like Abraham's obedience. Paul and James were not in conflict.
The good works for others of Ephesians 2:10 come about as a result of being Jesus' workmanship.
Those who obey and come to God on His terms (Acts 17:30; Acts 5:32; Acts 2:38) are justified and enter a relationship with Him through the holy spirit. Through that relationship (sanctification) we become His workmanship:
"As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent." (Jesus, in Revelation 3:19)
"If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned." (John 15:6)
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2:8-10)

    • @TheBibleSays
      @TheBibleSays 5 лет назад

@Asaph Vapor Again, you are ignoring the context of "works" and lumping all different kinds of works together, then making a false conclusion that no kind of works matter. In spite of James' statement that we are justified by works and not by "faith only" (James 2:24).
You want God's grace and mercy? You obey: you repent and come to Him on His terms, confessing and forsaking sin:
"He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13; Acts 17:30)
Otherwise you perish, unredeemed from the death penalty already earned for past sins:
*"Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?*
*I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."* (Luke 13:4,5)
Non-Trivia question: What did Jesus tell His disciples to preach. "Faith alone"? No. Here's the answer:
"Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
And that *repentance* and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." (Luke 24:45-47)

@Asaph Vapor You asked if I have been saved. The answer is no, I have not yet been saved from ever perishing in death by receiving the gift of eternal life. I will receive that salvation at Jesus' return, as promised (1 John 2:25; 1 Cor 15:42-54; 1 Thess 4:13-17). You have not been saved, either. *Read it in your Bible:* we have the *hope of salvation,* and *shall be saved* - in the future:
"But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ" (Paul, in 1 Thessalonians 5:8,9).
"But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we _shall be_ saved, even as they." (Acts 15: 11; Peter, speaking to apostles and elders about future salvation for both themselves and Gentiles. Did Peter say they _had been_ saved? No!) Also see Romans 5:9.
Meanwhile I am *being* saved, in another sense: saved from slavery to sin. As I abide in Him and walk in the spirit I become the new man Paul wrote about. I become Jesus' workmanship (Eph 2:10). This is sanctification. See Romans 8:13,14, Hebrews 12:11.
And I *have been* saved, in yet another sense. I have been saved from the hopelessness of having to perish as the penalty for past sins. I have been forgiven and redeemed from the death penalty already earned for past sins. I have been "purged" from my old sins (2 Peter 1:9). I have "remission of sins that are past" (Romans 3:25). This is justification: my past sins and their death penalty have been blotted out. With those sins (that separated me from God, Isaiah 59:1,2) gone, I am now reconciled or justified to God. How did this happen? Why did I receive this mercy, this grace?
"He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13)
"Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19, NKJV).

I have meditated long and hard on this, and before God with his inspiration I believe that 'sola fide' is the big misconception of the Reformation. We preach it, but cannot live it. It is 'Fides caritate formata' faith through charity or love. The Catholic doctrine is correct, although I am no Catholic. In reality 'faith alone' is meaningless. We do not live by faith we live by love. Faith is the means by which we connect with God, but without His grace and doing works in faith then faith by itself has no meaning. If you do not believe me, then go and bless someone and then see if you have faith. YOU WILL.

Romans 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
1 John 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
Are we not condemned because God looks at us and sees the righteousness of Christ or is it because our past sins are washed away and now in the Spirit we walk in love, in obedience, in the righteousness of the law? Calvinists claim the former but Paul and God claim the latter.
You can't confuse Catholic works salvation with biblical obedience of faith salvation, of love, like RC Sproul is trying to do.

Really sad to see this. Faith without love, without obedience, without love is dead, it is nothing.
Acts 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
    Hebrews 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
Romans 2:13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
Deuteronomy 7, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations. Covenant is blessings which includes salvation.
Genesis 22:18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
Faith must include love which must include obedience of faith. This is not works or deeds, like the Galatians, it is love.
Abraham's love for God gave him the faith to obey God and through that obedience the whole world was blessed, received the plan of salvation.
Those who do not obey God, who do not love him, will not be saved. It does not say sanctified. Read Romans 6 and 7 and see why we are not condemned in Christ. It is not just forgiveness it is obedience to the law of God, in the power of the Spirit, it is our righteousness with the power of God. It is not sinning which removes our condemnation not just the washing.
1 John 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. Do not let the Calvinists fool you. We must be righteous. We must walk in love, in obedience of faith, empowered by Christ in us and we in him. We must abided until the end and it is all about salvation. Please read Ezekiel 18. The soul that sins, any soul, will die. The wages of sin, for all men, is death. Forced perseverance is also false.
Jesus said we must exceed the righteousness of the Pharisees and be perfect. Sins washed away and sins in the Spirit cleansed again through confession. All forgiven by the blood. That is a perfect righteousness in God's eyes. John MacArthur claims this was impossible since the Pharisees had perfect righteousness. What? They were unrighteous. Complete lack of understanding of works in faith vs works outside of faith.

Justification, being declared righteous thru faith, comes first, then good works follows as we seek to please God. We have salvation when we believe the true Gospel of Christ. it is the gift of God, (Eph. 2:8-10) then we work out our lives in reverence to God. Jesus said, "you must be born again or you cannot see the Kingdom of God." John 3:3 When God puts His Spirit in us, our world view changes, so our lives change. Answering an “ altar call” is an ACT. Saying the “sinner’s Prayer” is an ACT. Confessing your sins is an ACT. Believing by grace through faith is an ACT. So Abraham's righteousness was faith alone?
Genesis 22:18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
So the whole world was offered salvation by Abraham's obedience of faith and we don't have to love or obey God for our salvation? It is nonsense.
Now read this carefully. RC Sproul deliberately twists what the bible actually teaches to try and convince you of this false teaching.
James is saying that faith alone, faith without love, faith without obedience is a false dead faith and he gives Abraham as an example of someone who was righteous because of his love and obedience of faith. He was in Christ, in the Spirit. This is not works of the law but love.
James 2:22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
And whose righteousness was this? 1 John 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
We walk in the righteousness of the law, in the Spirit. This is our righteousness, never of ourselves as we can do nothing without Christ.
Calvinism is really messed up. Claiming that love/obedience is not required for salvation is claiming those that hate God can be justified or saved.

Salvation is not for faith alone.
When the Apostle Paul says that salvation comes from faith, and not from works, he's talking about the works of the jewish law.
He's saying that salvation doesn't come from the good works of the jewish law, which is completed by the two commandment of Jesus (love God with all yourself and love the neighbour as yourself). And he's pointing out that every good thing doesn't come from us but comes from God, so salvation is by faith in the sense that any good thing done to obtain salvation comes from our faith in God, so its God's merit.
    Read this:
John 28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
Here when Jesus is asked what good work we have to do to obtain salvation, he answers that they have to believe in him. So we can understand from this verses that faith is a work.
    1) FAITH IS A WORK
Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Here Paul is saying that a man has to believe with the heart, faith is not brainy. Faith comes from the heart, and what is the feeling of believing in God? Love. Faith is love. Love God and love the neighbor, that's the faith.
    2) FAITH IS LOVE
What are the two commandments, the two good works that we have to do to go to paradise? Love God with all your heart and love the neighbor as yourself
    3) GOOD WORKS MEAN LOVING
Everything matches, faith is a work (1), faith is love (2) and good works mean loving (3).
There's no contradiction in the Bible. All you have to do is love, and you will be judged for your works (which are love). In a lot of parts in the Bible says that you will be judged for your works, but if good works mean loving, there's no contradiction. You will be judged for your works, and faith is a work, and faith is love, and works are love. See? No contradiction.

    • @Nick_Greenfield
      @Nick_Greenfield 3 года назад +2

Faith is not a work of man, it is a work of God. You cannot create within yourself faith. Ephesians 2:8-10 - "8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
True faith results in repentance and good works, but the repentance and good works never precede the gift of Faith.
If what you say is true "All you have to do is love, and you will be judged for your works (which are love)." then why did Jesus die on the cross? He is the one who was judged in our place. He took on our sin and by faith we receive His righteousness.

Protestant beliefs are contradictory and self refuting which means it cannot be of God.
Belief 1) Good works is only a fruit or sign of salvation
Belief 2) Man will always produce bad fruit (sin)
Conclusion: No Protestant is saved because they will always produce bad fruit
