  • The Lost Cape May Race Track
In the 1800s there was one sport that captured the minds of Americans. It wasn’t baseball, though it was starting to gain popularity, it was horse racing.
Up and down the coastline, our state was booming with different race tracks but did you know Cape May used to have their own?
Today we are going to find the lost Cape May Race Track.

I had a question, I'm looking at historical aerials of the cape may area. There looks like there used to be a track back in the 1930s off of north main street (rt 9) in cape may courthouse. The addition of the garden state parkway in the 1950s unfortunately cut right through it. Do we have any information on this? I can't seem to find anything. Now it's the location of atlantic city electric (courthouse) and Briarwood trailer park.

Joey thanks for another great vid. Horse racing is almost dead and baseball bad enough with too many boring 3.5 hour 9 inni g games that if they do not settle soon will loose more fans. Have several badeball fields in NE Philly that do not get used halve as much as 20 years ago. Back in the early 60's would get our dad to give us $2 each to go to the old Connie Mack stadium. Was 50 cent round trip for 2 busses we took, 50 cents to get and even after purchading a hot dog and a soda always came home with some money. Think for a family of 4 it now averages around $140 to go to a basrball game. Can remember as a kid the newsstands sold various racing tables. Only went to the race track once. Hit twice on the 7 or 8 races that I bet on. Second win did not even double my money so at that rate if you won 50% of the races you ended up loosing money. My cousin that took me their told me to never bet on the favorites due to low pay outs.

Great job as usual just wanted to point out that a 'driving track" would have been horse with sulky and driver behind him. Not the jockey riding the horse as your film shows. Harness racing was huge at the time and a horse named Dan Patch was the talk of the country. If the train had gotten rolling, the betting folks from Philly would have flocked here.

Very well done vid, Joey! So much hidden history down there. Thanks! I always wondered if anybody could do a story on the old, abandoned railroad tracks and track beds in and around Cape May? I heard about the "Ghost Tracks" on Higbee Beach and the "Sometimes Tracks" on Sunset Beach. Maybe New Jersey Transit will someday run train service to CM once again? Would be really cool!

Back in 1993 there was an older lady who had a house on the bay in del haven she had an old news paper which told a story of how the town was going to build along the bay there a boat dock sort of like a boardwalk. In the 1950 's where you can dock your boat and there would be places to eat and stores. In the article was a picture of how it would look but as we know nothing has become of it and I don't remember why.. So my question is does anyone know of this? The lady I'm talking about had to raise her 3 granddaughters cause their mother had die I believe from cancer they had lived on Lafayette st in del haven at the time ..my girls were friends of her grandkids and I use to take them to play. I think the place was to become another vacation spot..

Someone had told me years ago that here was a horse track in the lower part of Cape May County, but did not know where. Here's a video idea for you, not sure if you have covered it before but some years ago, about 10?, Morey's were considering building a roller coaster that went from the 26th st Pier over to the old Hunt's Pier and then back. Think they even had a rough layout and cost estimate. Then it just died. Would be interested to know more about that idea.
