- How to Remove the BSI on a Peugeot 406
BSI stands for Body Systems Interface, and this is essentially the second main ECU that deals with most electrical things inside the car such as the instrument cluster, windows, indicators, wipers, climate control etc.
I have had one play up on me in the past and everything in the car can go mad, the dials move up and down for no reason and the fan speed is uncontrollable.
Other things it does is stores the cars mileage and contains a relay to turn on the air conditioning.
If then for whatever reason you have a fault with your BSI and need to remove it to have it replaced, or repaired then this video will show you how to remove it.
I also show to remove the corner section of the dash, i prefer to do this when removing the BSI as it gives better access, but if you want to make an older 406 look a bit newer get a black corner section to replace this from a scrapyard, personally i prefer the black corner section as it matches the rest of the dash, i don't understand why peugeot initially used grey for this part and the glove box.
Your videos are very helpful and informative! Could you make a video on how to disable the daytime running lights on the D9 406 (Facelift) It's really annoying when the all the lights turn on whenever the engine starts! Keep up the good work!
+Otto R (Eurobandit) The daytime running lights on the D9 in most countries are set to off, but its an option i have seen when plugging the Peugeot Planet tool into the car, its a very easy thing to configure on or off with the tool, but i dont think there is a way to disable it without plugging one in. What country is your car in? Perhaps there was manditory DRL laws for certain countries back in 2002.
I'm in Sweden and having the lights on during daytime is a law since the 1970's that I don't care about. On some cars there's a relay that you pull out, on others (Especially older ones) There's a small box that turnes the lights on as soon as the ignition is on. I don't have automatic headlights on my 2001 406 3.0 V6. Some people say that there's a fuse that I need to pull out. I have no idea yet, but i'll eventually find a way to disable the DRL.
+Otto R (Eurobandit) Ah right thats probably why volvos over here have had DRL's long before audi started. Its possible that the 406 has a fuse for them, but if its a D9 its more likley that the funciton goes through the BSI in which case its a configurable option with pp2000. Very easy to turn on and off.
As for the 3.0 V6, is it the ES9J4S? What is your opinion of the V6? I have only ever been in 406's with the 1.9 XUD or 2.0 HDi, the V6 seems like it would be a nice engine to have, fuel consumption aside.
The V6 is the best choice in my oppinion. I'll make a video about how it is owning in next year in the spring since it's hibernating because it's my summer/hobby car. Probably not the most reliable car, but once everything works fine it's great, fast enough & fun to drive as well! The fuel consumption isn't bad either. It takes about 10L/100KM mixed city/highway driving with light foot on the pedal and speed up to 150KM/H. In city driving it should take 14 - 15L/100KM depending on the fuel quality which isn't known for being good in Scandinavia. Overall so far I'm pretty satisfied with it even though I had to change quite a few parts since I bought it (A few months ago.) Do you want to know what I've done to it so far?
And yeah it's the ES9J4S Engine with 207HP
The best video on internet!!!
thanks

I have a huge hole in the rear right lifting point of the chassis frame which needs to be welded closed again. Do I need to remove or disconnect the ECU or is it enough to just disconnect the battery negative terminal. I do not want to damage any electronics.
- Disconnecting the minus of the battery does not alone protect the electronics. They are still connected to chassis ground, so the only sure way is to completely remove the ECU.
It is at least as important to connect the grounding of the welding machine near the workplace, keeping the circuit short is important. Current that does not circulate around the body is current that cannot cause problems.
The negative terminal is all i have ever removed for welding but for the sake of peace of mind whats an extra 2 mins to disconnect the ECU
nice share thank you
very well filmed and explained
Excellent!
Is the removal of the BSI on a Citroen Xsara Picasso the same as this?
It looks very similar.
Cheers.
nice and good work thx
Well done. But is it now possible to bypass the immobiliser? Also does the power for the fuel pump and the injectors come from the ECU or the immobiliser? Jack
+Jack Bramwell The immobiliser as far as im aware is part of the BSI with the ring around the key just sending information back to the BSI. The BSI and ECU would talk to eachother on weather to immobilize the car probably just not opening the injectors or the like. I am not 100% sure on how the system is programmed or what way its wired up but yes its possible to bypass the immobilizer its been done on some cars to save the cost of reprogramming the key, i am not sure how its done and probably heading over to 406oc with this question.
yes if you cut the right wires in the ecu, is 2
thanks one again for accept
Hello and thanks for these awesome and helpfull videos! I'm currently working on a facelift 406 (year 2000), installing an aftermarket keyless entry kit (don't have the original key and new one costs too much). There isn't too much information about how to install it on the net, so could you help me? Where can I find right wires, do I need to cut any original wires and so on?
Hi, ive never done this myself, i have rewired the key to a bathroom pullcord switch mounted to the headliner and have a video on this channel about that, but it was a bit of an unusual way to go about it.
Try the 406 owners club, a replacement key shouldn't be too expensive, keyless entry systems I don't think they would work with the immobiliser as it would probably need to be disabled
Replacement key was about 200£, so no thanks! With keyless entry I mean remote door locks. I have two spare keys to this car so I can drive it without problems. ruclips.net/video/TLuJtk-EX0s/видео.html in this video someone does the thing I'm about to do, but I don't understand what he says. I know how to wire remote box (done it many times with different vehicles) but what does he say about the orange wire in car wiring mess? There is a blue thingy in that wire, what is it? Green and grey wires are lock/unlock, + to other and - to other to lock and to open just switch polarity?
I'm not too sure whats going on in that video, unfortunately.
I've bought replacement keys from eBay cheaper than that, get a blank immobiliser chip and a PP2000 dongle and reprogram the keys yourself. I'm not too sure about this system unfortunately but would recommend starting a thread on the 406 owners club as you will get more information over there possibly from someone who has done this.
The guy on video replied me, orange wire is cut by mistake when trying to find right wires. Orange wire tells BSI if door is locked or unlocked and does not need to be cut. So those two other wires has to be driver's door actuator wires. With this remote kit you just remote control driver's door actuator and BSI tells rest of the doors to unlock. In this case when you cut those two wires going to driver's door, you are not able to unlock driver's door with key from passanger door.
nice to see your a fan of teng tools too!
Just out of interest I had the variable resistor go on my 406 and I have put a new one in and ever since my clarion stereo stays illuminated even when off and the car is locked at ideas?
Really good tools that teng makes, ive bought a few bits of snap on stuff but teng makes some very good tools.
Is that the variable resistor for the dashboard and instrument cluster lights? Is your car a pre facelift model?
@@peugeotCitroen2CV I believe that's what they called it I may have got it wrong? it plugs into the heater ducting near the fan motor as I had no fan working on the digital control panel and that was at fault. mines a 2002 2.0 hdi funny enough same colour as yours! it's like there's a permanent live going to the stereo? I did buy a new ignition switch but when I fitted that the car wouldn't start?
@@charlieboy259
Ah yes the heater blower motor resistor pack. I was wondering what resistor as the subject was on the bulbs for the radio.
I dont think the two circuits are linked, did you just unplug the old resistor and put a new one back in? Any wires altered in the process?
Its strange that a radio lights would stay on permanently. Was there any other things changed on the wiring?
I would recommend the 406 owners club website or even the facebook page they have. This is not an issue that i have had with a 406 radio myself but someone on there may have and there is a far better chance of getting a solution.
@@peugeotCitroen2CV thanks for the advice I will check them out.
everything was disconnected and reconnected again using the original wiring loom, nothing burnt out on any connectors either?
the only thing I can think of is the cigar socket I had to rewire as the previous owner used that as a feed for the fan, maybe that's caused a problem?
thanks again
Hi! Thanks for the video! Could you tell me where is indicator/flash relay located?
I think its actually part of the BSI unit, it may be a solid state realy or one mounted to the bsi itself.
Yeah you are probably right, thanks for the reply!
I have this problem, removed from the car battery for the winter, put it into place in the spring, insert the ignition key and lights immobilizer (key) will It help me???
Thanks in advance..
Are you getting the immobiliser light coming onto the instrument cluster? Will the car start at all? have you got another key that you can try? failing that it might need a new transponder programmed to your car, its not that bad a new chip is about £3, the 4 digit if you have it (printed on a card) makes things easier, its £16 to get this code off the internet using your vin, and a pp2000 machine is also needed, although someone on peugeot forums might be nearby and able to help with that.
Good video. Heating relay mirrors and rear window, too, in BSI ?
The rear window one definatley is, im not sure about the mirrors, they might just turn on with the ignition.
thank you
One question that i have NEVER got an answer too anywhere in this damn internet:
Are the high beam and low beam realys in the BSI or not? If not, where the hell are they?
My high beams are stuck ON and I just removed their fuses but I cannot find the damn relays!!!
Hi there
It can depend on the year of the car, and its build code what electrical system it is using.
I can look up a wiring diagram for you if you get those bits of information.
@@peugeotCitroen2CV thank you!
I solved it! The relay is HIDDEN, it's found in the engine compartment fuse box, under the plastic containing the fuses. It is not visible, you have to make a hole to reach it or at least that's what i've done. The board has some kind of silicone on the part where there is soldering so it's hard to remove the relay but not impossible.
Man I started to have the need to make a channel to tell people these hidden stuf!!
I have a Peugeot 406 built in 2003 and the AC is not working. However it has the Valeo BSI, not the Siemens one, do you happen to know where I can find the AC relay on the Valeo BSI?
I cant say i would know the internal workings of the BSI, it may be worth asking on the owners club.
However, have you had the AC system checked, if there is low gas pressure it will not turn on the compressor
@@peugeotCitroen2CV he probably meant the heater fan not working
hi I needed help my peugeot 406 2.0 don't wanna start after I repair the top cascade it's jst cranking
Hi
Is it a 2.0 diesel or petrol?
When you say top cascade what part is that, i am just not too sure what the cascade is.
Can these units be changed with one from the scrap yard
If you get everything, ie the BSI, ECU, key and immobilizer ring.
Hi, does the replacement BSI need matching with the ECU or can you just swap them over
I believe that it needs to be programmed in using a pp2000 machine, but i have never programmed one, the best place to ask is on 406oc
Many thanks
Hello.
I have V6 1999 and I wonder do I also have this BSI
In my case I have no working heater blower. I changed all except this BSI.
I have voltage on wires connected to heater blover showing 11.37V but there is no power to light up bulp or electric tester. Key wires swapped 3 times. AC panel swapped for tests. Resistor integrated with heater blower also was swapped. Heater blower itself rn fine on 12V when plugged in straight from battery.
I have no idea what to check next. Except this BSI
The fact you have 11.37v at the blower is confusing, Have you asked about this on the 406 owners club?
@@peugeotCitroen2CV I have older version without BSI. I asked on some 406 forums but no solution.
@@Cosm1c_69 1999 will still have a BSI i think in there somewhere. To be honest i dont know if i had the car in front of me i could probably start going through it but its not something i can really help with in these comments. 406 owners club facebook page has thousands of members and should get a fairly quick response.
hi my 406 model 2002 give me key light in dashboard and it not have immobilizer system on obd scan tool (launch pro 3 ) and no spark from plugs and wont start she give me an (bsi error comunication withe euc) in my
What is your scan tool is it a PP2000?
The key light comes on because the car has not recgonised the immobilizer chip in the key, has it been damaged in any way?
Hi man. I have a 406 from 2001 with automatic gear box... Most of the times when I start the engine the ventilation system inside the car doesn't work. The digital controls do work and I see the fan indicator showing it's on (on the screen)... but the fans don't move!!. Then I turn off the engine and turn it on again and the fans work perfectly. What could be happening??? Thanks for your answer.
I think its something to do with loose connections around the back of the key barrel, if you take the steering shrowding off for access, and wiggle the wires at the back of the key barrel the fan might start working, its a problem I've read about before. It would be worthwhile joining 406oc to find out more about this issue.
Thanks!!
There's a controller or resistor on passenger side, behind glovebox and high up and directly behind the front end of the centre console. One self tapper holds it on Its black with green bits. Get a new one from ebay and make sure it's not a Valeo make! They come cheaper for cars other than the 406 but are exactly the same, go by the numbers on it. If you give it a good clout it will probably work for a while.
Jon Wearing Just thought, my car is RHD. Not sure where you might find this component on a LHD car, but start in the same place. I am almost 100% confident that this will be your problem, it is a common fault thanks to the piss poor French electrical components.
hi mate love your videos wonder if you have ever come across this problem, my beloved Peugeot 406 glx hdi family (110) 02 plate When driving it keeps locking and unlocking on it own also some times when i brake, the brake lights and the hazard lights come on
Brake lights and hazzards on together could be a bad earth in the boot, check them all for corrosion and clean if necessary. Also if it has any twin filament bulbs eg one bulb that does both tail and brake light take them out and carefully check to see that the two filaments are not touching eachother.
The locking/unlocking issue is strange, is there any specific things that make it happen, the wires in the door grommet would be the first place to check for broken insulation and shorting.
Hi man. I have got a Peugeot 206 2000 year. All the pointers of painel is stopped. Don´t work!!!! Just is working the lights, lighthouse high and low, arrows, stop light. What can be? Can you help me. Great vídeo....... If you can help me ,,, Thanks so much...!!!
+Carlos Blassioli Check all the fuses first, are there any water leaks in the car? Best bet would be peugeot forums or similar im not sure exactly what would cause this on a 206 but they should know on one of the owners clubs.
Thanks man, i did check all fuses, is all ok, the points is sttoped..... i did a test on the fires, and relays. BSI , BSM Is all ok... i dont´know more that i do.......!!!!!
Can be the BSM box of fuses?
+Carlos Blassioli Id recommend registering on one of the peugeot forums, (peugeotforums.com perhaps), i have not worked much on the 206's electrics so cant really diagnose this problem
Could be something like a bad earth or damaged wiring, but im not sure.
Ok man thanks so much to help me. In my car, has 2 relay that stay under the steering whell, ( 4 pines, 25 A, 5 Pines 25A ), it will go to ignition. Someone did a damn service, there on Peugeot Santos Brazil. When I turn on the fan , the thread that is in the fuse box heats up too !!!! I tried to fix it, made the connection again but to no avail . I´m trying fix it, cause i´m eletronic technical, but i´m not trying, is so hard...... many wires....... See you
Hi there mate I wonder if you could help my car wouldnt start suspected started motor replaced it today now car wont start it has power saving mode coming up with a little key going into a square on dashboard mechanic says could be glow plugs as he put diagnostic on it and it never came up anything any help appriciated lol
They key going into the square is the immobiliser light, try starting the car with another key, but also make sure the battery is fully charged in the car.
As for disgnostics, ordinary multipurpose scanners such as the snap on one dont talk too well with the 406, its pre obd, the best thing is a PP2000 diagnostic tool they can be bought off ebay for about £80 and work on an xp laptop.
Tried starting it with my other key nothing happning. My uncle calling in a favour at one of the puegeot garages so we will see what happens with that lol but I will probs buy the pp2000 tool u mentioned. thanks mate appreciated
peugeotCitroen2CV Is it turning over but not firing? It does sound like an immobilise problem, ive never had much problems with immobilisers but they do give bother occasionally, try asking on 406oc about this issue before going to the dealer.
Yeah turning over not firing. Radio is working lights are working windows not working lol ill go check out 406cc and see if anyone with same problem
Do i need to u hook battery?
It would be advisable to disconnect the battery.
Hallo bei meinem Peugeot 406 lässt sich der Zündschlüssel nur in Zündstellung drehen aber kann das Auto nicht starten. Kann mir da jemand helfen? Danke im voraus
Has the starter motor failed?

I want ask u about oil lmp when I start car lamp not run
The low oil pressure lamp? Or the oil level indicator that displays in the LCD screen in the instrument cluster.
If you don't see the oil level indicator appear perhaps your car does not have the feature, in which case checking the dipstick is how you would check the oil, even if you do have the level indicator checking the dipstick is still a better way to see how much oil you have in the engine.
i mean low oil pressure lamp
and i have a problem no any one can repir it
bettry lamp turn on all the time
The battery symbol in the instrument cluster normally means the alternator isn't charging the battery
As for the low oil pressure light, is there good oil in the engine, has it been changed regularly in the past, does the engine make any odd noises?
