What tip would be better for welding a T weld? I'm planning on welding two HDPE barrels together perpendicular to each other notching an end of one to be welded to the side of the other. I was thinking the triangle one since most of the joint would be 90 degrees but not sure. Thanks for your help!
Like older motorhome/ camper parts too! Thx for the tips
I have just started a job using this equipment going to try some of your steps to improve my welding thankyou
Great information thanks for sharing! New supporter here and I’m new to plastic welding!
Great video for learning how to weld plastics.
We use PVC type 2 how well would this hold? We are having separation issues with gluing now.
A video on welding inside small containers would be useful. Product videos from companies always show using their product in easy situations.
Hi Bob, thanks for your comment. This video is to assist in teaching the process. Its not an application video. If you have a specific requirement, please email me full details and I will address it for you . you may email us at info@techspanonline.com . I hope this helps. Seasons greetings to you buddy ..
This video is a trip. I feel like I should be watching it on a hit of bomb. Seriously though, I just replaced a plastic gas tank on a chevy truck, because a tweaker cut a slice in it with a utility knife to steal the gas, and I was thinking about what it would take to weld the slice. Welding plastic gas tanks in the future may be more common then you could imagine. Inflation, an high gas prices are coming. If I saw it once, it will happen again, and again. Just like converter thefts. I would like to see if it can be done. If it can, I would probably buy this product.
Dude you’re so right this video is a fucking trip
Thanks. Our equipment complies with worldwide welding standards as set by the DVS joining association in Switzerland. You will find that two this requires two important factors - Heat & Pressure. It is very important to provide pressure on the welding rod if you wish to achieve structural welding.
I just bought an American version of this welder that is obviously cheaper looking. This is a great video and previous research has told me to keep the heating element from burning out, you should keep the welder on After welding with the heat turned to Zero to cool the element before unplugging. My welder did not come with the automatic feed nozzle and was wondering where I can purchase this. Thanks for the great video, RH DSD

Nice product and instructional. I would have liked to see these joints cross cut to show the root and penetration achieved.
Hi wildcard, thanks... we hope to produce more helpful videos in the near future. I will see if we can include such a cross section cut as it is quite interesting to see the penetration.
Hi there, If the plastic you are trying to weld is a 'thermoplastic' then it should be possible to weld it. You can do a small test to establish whether it is a thermoplastic or a thermoset - using a sharp blade, cut a slither of the material off the parent. If it curls up, then its a thermoplastic. If it remains very rigid and straight, then it is a thermoset. A thermoset materail is not weldable. Hope this helps.
Super Video.Danke!
I want to buy one, do these create strong reliable welds though ? For example is the weld as strong as the material its bonding ? In this case I will be welding HDPE
Thanks
Is this equipment/technique suitable for repairing a motorcycle fairing? I purchased a bike with some fairing damage with the view to repairing it.
Quick question,
When welding an internal corner on two upvc sheets, vertically, do you need to have a gap between that materials to give the weld rod somewhere to melt into?
It depends on the application. If you are after structural strength, perhaps this is best. A "v" groove usually does the trick.. If you are welding into a 90 deg, then no. But you would need to '"tack" the materials.. Have a look here for more detailed info - www.plasticweldingtools.com.au/how-to-weld-plastics/
Actually thus technic is great for motorcycle plastic. when you consider the cost of a single fairing or dude panel can cost $900.00 it's very cost affective. I tried this once and the weld bonding is 3 times higher then normal factory bonds. great stuff if you need to restore panels that no longer can be bought or found.
An excellent presentation. Thx for sharing.
That and a laser cutter and you could make so much cool stuff!!
How strong is the weld could you show some testing....unless you already did i forwarded a bit.
We only provide plastic welding equipment approved to DVS standards. What this means is that the welding procedures, techniques and associated equipment will provide very high strength structural welds. Hence why we are very big on ensuring the techniques for welding plastics are followed. For further information about "How to Weld Plastics" go here >

Hello, greetings from South Carolina USA. I have a question specifically pertaining a splicing operation of Nylon 6 extruded monofilament (0.055-0.170 diameter). How would a hot-air process like this compare in tensile strength to an ultrasonic process?
Thanks for your time,
Bob
Hi Bob, weld strength can be very strong by hot air welding. Ultrasonic welding is an extremely fast process and usually used in the packaging industry. Hope that answers your query. Regards, TECHSPAN
@chesterjc These can weld almost all thermoplastics, so if your welding tank is thermoplastic, its very likely you can weld it.
Absolutely loved this video!

were can you buy the sheets of material you used would like to make a small planter this way?
Thank you
Hi kev b , Depends on where you are located. We source this kind of thing in Australia & or New Zealand through a supply known as Mulford Plastics. There are others, google 'plastic sheet suppliers' and you should turn a few up. All the best.
Thank you for the info, and fast reply
if you are welding 90 degree angles, the contact edge of the sheets don't weld together do they? just on the exterior?
Hi bunkkasponge, you are correct. As with all forms of welding, any oils, greases, atmospheric soils, paints etc, can effect the welding... so it is important to ensure good clean surfaces for successful, strong structural welding.
can you use a hair dryer?
How do I supply the device, the machine?
Thanks stonedeagle99, you are correct.. Use of a soldering iron will NOT effect a molecular weld as achievable with the correct equipment for the task..
No. You need accurate temperatures to be used when welding specific plastics. Their welding temperatures all vary slightly... So you need a machine with electronic temperature control. In some cases plastics will require 300 - 400 deg Celcius ... So a hair dryer simply wont work
Kindly confirm if this tool can be used for HDPE lining material about 1.5mm thick or please recommend the right model for HDPE. Is there a dealer in Philippines? Thanks.
I wonder if this would be suitable for computer repair? It would need to be able to do butt joints with little to no structural integrity loss.
The parts for fixing something as simple as a top panel can be very expensive to fix sometimes making it uneconomical for customers.

What if I don’t need it for strength and just need it to mend holes for water proofing, is this type of welding too much, and should I just instead use a soldering iron to patch the holes that I’ve made?

There have been a few comments along the lines of 'i can do this with a soldering iron' -- our response to this is - No you can not. These techniques show plastic welding to the highest possible strength, and to worldwide plastic welding standards as set by the DVS joining association of Switzerland/Germany. A soldering iron runs at very high temperatures and will burn and degrade plastics. We would call that 'fusing', not Welding. Weld testing will show this.
Unless your iron is adjustable..
Sorry it is not. Welding is a molecular process where the parent and welding rod and welded with almost no loss of strength. Thermoplastics require specific welding temperatures in order not to damage or degrade the material. A soldering iron will do this as soon as you contact the plastic. You will NOT ACHIEVE STRUCTURAL WELDING WITH A SOLDERING IRON.
A soldering iron still will not correctly and evenly pre heat the parent material. If you know of a very accurately controlled soldering iron.. please send me a link. The best way to solder with any such control is to use a hot air tool with electronic temperature control.. just like our plastic welding tools. Hope this helps.
My Duratech ts-1564 has served me well on all of the welding i have done (HDPE) though I did make up a tip for it on the lathe/mill so I didn't ruin my good electronics tip, which wasn't really suitable for welding anyway.
Hi 74KU, if you are only 'fusing' and do not require structural strength great, but if you want a structural molecular 'weld' the use a Techspan plastic welding tool every time. www.plasticweldingtools.com.au/product-category/plastic-welding-kits/
I have 2 question 1 how strong is the tack weld? 2 can the welded area be sanded smooth for re-priming and painting? I plan to use this to repair a broken piece on my hard plastic R.C. Truck and to kit bash another 2 R.C. Vehicles together to make 1 which is also hard plastic
Hi DaveStaff4,
Answers to your questions -
1. "Tacking" as shown in our video has no real structural strength. A Tack is to close up the joint gaps, and to help align the two parts.
2. Yes, the completed weld can be sanded with abrasives - use a range of abrasive grits in order to achieve the required finish.. and yes, it is common to sand the parts to allow a high gloss paint finish.
3. Ensure you identify the plastic material first to ensure it is a weldable thermoplastic.

What size rotary burr (head diameter) would be good to create a V to weld 2 sheets of 3/16" thick HDPE together? I am looking at burrs and wondering if you used HSS or carbide? I tried using a rotary sander bit but the sandpaper got clogged with the plastic very quickly. I was looking into grinding bits as well. Thanks

Can this process be used with extruded plastic fuel tanks with out first backfilling them with an insert gas???
These tools use electrically heated hot air, however we recommend all and any safety moves to limit problems to acceptable levels.
can this work on a grille for a 68 charger, that era of plastic?
No now sod off
Nice video and song! Whose is this song?
From briefly reading through the comments, I understand that this welding process makes one of the strongest bonds you can make between the mating surfaces. Are these welds watertight and do you have more info on the strength (PSI max) and can it handle being in a vacuum?
Yes, Welds can be hermitic. There is also a tester we supply for checking this called a 'spark tester'. Feel free to email me direct for more details. info@plasticweldingtools.com.au
I've never plastic welded before, can someone explain why you need a grounding clamp? Does the plastic need to be set on a metal surface? I figured it would be a process more akin to TIG, but it looks very different.
Hi Master Betty, thanks for your comment. No, you do not need a grounding clamp. Plastic is not conductive. This clamp is used simply to hold and support the work.
TECHSPANONLINE ok, thanks. It didn't make sense to me, since, as you said, plastic isn't conductive. I mistook the clamp.

I have an ABS eddyline kayak that has some major cracks in it. I was told methyl methacrylate and fiberglass tape is the way to fix it. Would plastic welding be better?
I’m pretty sure acrylic will burn and turn colors
@@MudMotorsMax I fixed it with methyl methacrylate and carbon fiber cloth
@@ArcolaBridge nice
@@MudMotorsMax eddyline recommended methyl methacrylate and fiberglass cloth. But I use the carbon fiber because I think it lasts longer and it's stronger. I used my Dremel to open up the cracks extra wide so that I could Gap fill the cracks with the methyl methacrylate. Then I use 50 grit sandpaper to create a 1-inch rough on either side of the crack on the inside and outside of the kayak. Then I used a wire wheel on my power drill to put some deep grooves on both sides of the crack inside and out again one in into the roughed-up 50 grit section. I applied the methyl methacrylate to a 4in wide carbon fiber cloth and also applied the methyl methacrylate to the inside of a kayak and then applied the carbon fiber cloth coated with the methyl methacrylate onto the inside of the crack. Then I used more methyl methacrylate over the top of that sandwiched with another layer of carbon fiber cloth and methyl methacrylate and then overlaid it with more methyl methacrylate. On the exterior I filled the Gap with methyl methacrylate and smooth it out with a spatula and built it up taller than the crack and use the detail sander to bring it down smooth. I thought about covering it up with a decal or painting it but actually having a crack in the kayak sort of seems cool to look at. I might paint it with an acrylic paint at some point. I even toyed with the idea of sanding the whole bottom of the kayak and applying something like magic any foul which is a new silicone-based antifoul. Not that it needs that or anything but maybe that would be kind of cool. But anyway it took a bit of time to do this but it was well worth saving this awesome eddyline 14 sit-on-top.
@@ArcolaBridge i’m starting off with a hot air welder using a speed welding set up and I’ll be welding quarter inch HDPE into small 10 foot boats and in July I’m buying an extrusion welder right now I’m in the bed research stage because the biggest concern and the biggest challenge is stopping the sheets from warping and I do know how to stop it but I’ll keep it to myself for now

Hello I want to have a 40l cylinder tank and I have to pressurised it. Can this cylinder resist 2 bar pressure or explode? How can ı learn about this ?
If you use a spark tester after the welding to ensure it is water tight, it is likely.. but may depend on the material and its wall section thickness ..
I did this for a few years in a fab shop. I was required to get full fusion while keeping the rod round and prett so I looked more like the first weld. Thats poly propylene. Corzan is much more difficult and interesting process.
Interesting; never knew they did that. I guess it replaces acetone. On the one example, the bead didn't look too good. I was a good welder in high school; both gas and arc. What does an average plastic welder get paid and are there a lot of jobs out there? I saw one available but they wanted experience. Just curious.
Hi Steve, thanks for your comment. Remember this is simply a demonstration ... In respect of the welders job and usual remuneration, It really depends what country you are in , and also on what particular welding you are doing. For example, a guy welding repairs to bumpers is perhaps more likely to earn more if he is fabricating, or welding a waterproof membrane... like a roof.
Sounds complicated! As a teacher, I'm sure a welder makes more cash. I was a decent arc welder in high school, many moons ago and an average gas welder. I retired at 50 and I'm looking for something to do. I don't know if I could weld anymore but it would be interesting to try.
John, I had good kids that were conservative and well behaved. I was lucky. I was tired of all the common core crap and I wanted to try something else. I'm only 50.
I'm over it. :-)
Is it possible to weld PVDF to CPVC ?
+John Noone Hi John Noone, In most cases compatibility is very important. With requirements like this we suggest you try taking a slither from one part and attempt a weld on the other part. This will be the most compatibility you can achieve, so you would have to make a decision on the resulting weld strength and whether or not it was sufficient for the application requirements. www.plasticweldingtools.com.au/how-to-weld-plastics/
When you ask your wedding DJ friend to edit your instructional welding video
Hi John, these are different materials, so you should not expect a good result. While you may see 'some' kind of bond, you will not be able to effect 'good' welding. We can supply both PVDF and PVC welding rods, although PVDF is not listed on our e-commerce welding rod website. For ordering suggest you email me direct at tim@plasticweldingtools.com.au

Dear. friend. Please. Explain. Hot. air. Plastic. welding. Systems.
Hot air plastic welding is the process of joining two or more plastic surfaces together using hot air, usually applied by a heat gun. Plastic products can't always be made in one piece. It is often better and more economical to fabricate products as separate pieces.
Does this tool use nitrogen?
I have the same welder and I can pendulum heavy duty stainless steel with this system
These are welder for Plastics.. not metal..
Can this be used to weld acrylics?
Yes, you can weld acrylic. However, this material tends to absorb moisture from the environment, so the moisture in the material will tend to 'bubble' as it is heated during welding. So if a high visual finish is required, it is not always possible to achieve. Hope this helps.
how well does this work on hdpe?

Guys, could anybody help me out? When you weld, do you melt the surface as well as the rod? Or do you just melt the rod? I cannot seem to get a strong weld if I don't melt the surface so I might be doing it wrong. However, some plastics are quite thin, so I always distort the parent material when applying pressure with the rod... :(
Hi Farseer1995, you need to heat both the parent and welding rod evenly. This is how the pendulum welding process works.. the pendulum motion heats both the parent material and welding rod.
Here is some more how to info >>

If only like materials can be welded, why are the rods different than the plastic?
Would HDPE provide sufficient protection if used to make a motorcycle mask, or are there other weldable plastics that would be better suited for that purpose?
Hi Matthew Traver, I would check what regulations in your country state. There is likely to have been approved materials for such applications. Proceed with caution is my advice. HDPE is commonly used for an array of plastic around the home. Recycling Bins, Water tanks, Wheel barrows, Milk Bottles .. even Petrol & Fuel containers.. and many more. It is easy to fabricate and weld.
Do you have a UK agent, or any companies that use your equipment/techniques?

The rods may look different, but they are the same material. We used a different colour simply to allow the viewer to see the process easily. In this case the parent material and welding rods are polypropylene.
