I tell you what...I played with many OLD Lincoln logs back in the day, and you are SPOT ON with their shape, length, and even the color of the green roof pieces. I am shocked at how closely they resemble the real thing (back in the day anyways). When I saw you going over each type of block created, I was laughing because they look sooooo good, and like the originals! Great build, and GREAT entry...get it in there!
Great birdhouse. Nice garage. There is even space next to the Thunderbird for a woodshop.
Like they said. Eves are along the edge, gables are on the ends. But then, it's your story, not ours. I do woodwork for the enjoyment, not in an attempt to make others happy. I appreciate your efforts. Thank you.
My grandson and I watched this video to figure out how to build a log cabin! LOL! Thanks for the video!
Glad to see I'm not the only one who dips in the can and wipes off the excess. Works like a charm on smaller pieces!
You learn something every day. I'm English and thought that a Lincoln Log was a type of candy bar.
Also known as "American Logs". What do you call them there?
Drunken Woodworker I don't think I've ever seen anything similar on sale here, certainly not a mass-market product whose name would be well known.
The main construction toys over here were Mecanno and, in more recent years, Lego.
This is great David. Gonna make some of these for my kids and show 'em how we built stuff when we were kids.
Paul Desmond Yes!
If you're itching for a project, what about a 2 way mirror that hides a TV? It's a sick project that hides a TV behind a mirror. As of now, I can only find businesses and partial tutorials.
Whether you want to or not, I really dig the channel and passion!
Very cool. The birds never had it so good...
great toys for the grandkids, plus send free plans. keep up the good projects
I have a two year old girl and we have one more on the way. This is for sure a project I'll be building in the future! I want them to grow up seeing how things physically are built/played with instead of everything on the iPad. Thanks for the inspiration!
I actually worked in the factory that makes Lincoln logs and operated the machine. The blanks fed into the machine were about 18"-22" long sticks with the edges machined. The sticks were fed into a chain side by side and went through a dado and a rip saw. the whole machine was about the size of a large desk.
+Jeff Thomas crazy!!
You are the best builder ever
If it's a small bird they would be driving a "hummer" lol, great project by the way my son will love it.
Too Cool. Not sure how I have missed this video. Love it.
Can't wait to make some Lincoln logs for my future children some day-great idea!
Pretty sweet project. Really awesome idea.
Very cool David, that's a great looking bird house.
Is this where you wood workers come to hang out? Lol.
Fun project. Really creative. Keep doing these fun episodes. Thanks.
Very nice project. I often thought of making similar toys for my granddaughter.
looks great! I'm sure someone else has already said it but if you at going to use these as a toy, you will need a tab on the lower section of the eves to hold the roof pieces on when you stack them.
Cool video. I really liked your stopmotion-esk editing of the time lapse for the garage.
Great video David. Takes me back to building things with my Lincoln Logs as a kid.
That came out really nice! Cool idea David!
I think I would've cut the dados into the boards, and then cut the logs from the board. Love the project. One of my earliest memories is of Lincoln Logs.
Simple and beautiful. Good job man!
They look great!
Wow. That brought back memories. Lincoln logs were one of my favorite toys when I was a little kid. Then I got an Erector Set (back when they were good!) and never looked back. I still remember building a "robot" with my erector set that had an electric motor and wheels. The motor was corded, so its range wasn't very far.
Very nice!! Your decision to wait until after winter is the same as mine... I just hung it up so people could see how it looked on a tree ( mine was a little odd )....plus all my birds, bats and critters are are moving south... Unfortunately I don't have that option... But it can be here for them in the spring... New York can be brutal... But I have other " emergency" birdhouses, just in case... Thanks for sharing... Now I want Lincoln logs:)
Bird bird. Bird is the word....
Great build! Best of luck with the contest!
Thanks!
Very nice David! I've had this video save for awhile after it first came out. What am am planning on doing soon is making the same thing but as a tissue box cover. Just leaving a small gap at the peak for the tissues to come out and not gluing the eves to the walls
Enjoy your videos. Great job. I want to see that bird park his Thunderbird in the garage.
Thunderbird's Are Go!! Nice Work.
I particularly liked the Foley effects for the nail gun! ;) Sweet build!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane . . . I had Lincoln Logs when I was a kid. Abe and I had great fun with his logs. I like your birdhouse and may even try to build one myself.
LOVE it Dave Drunken Woodworker ! Will make a great Christmas present for my kids. Thanks!
Your projects are just so creative and cool
A birdhouse in the shop, then a bat house in a parking lot. What's next, a wombat sanctuary in the International Space Station?
awesome build loving all the stuff your doing and the podcast cast with Bob and Jimmy thank you for the great work
that is so cool. maybe i need to make some of those for my grandson.
The bird would be much cooler if it drove a Roadrunner.
This project is great. I've recently been inspired to start making some toys for my kid after seeing a bunch of wood toys in a local boutique shop. This one will be on my to do list. Thanks.
Great video! I grew up playing with Lincoln logs. They were my favorite toy and I never had enough lol.
This is awesome! I know how i'm going to break in my new dado stack...
Cool video and idea! I have two tubes of them from when I was a kid in the 80s that my daughter plays with now... And my parents didn't pay no $35 for them either!
If it was a cool bird it would drive a firebird lol, good job man, looks great 👍🏆.
Great video and project, I am building a set from your plans, I am almost done with them. Thank you for the great videos and the great projects, pleas keep them coming.
Please share some photos when you're done!
I will share pics when I finish them.
Pretty clever. Good luck in the contest.
Awesome Project David!!!
great work ! Love it..
Nice build. I used to love building stuff with those. Thanks for the video
For cost vs time and materials spent on the build the $50,00 bucket is by far the better deal. That being said, buying a child a gift means nothing more than you remembered to do so.
Taking the time to build something for him or her shows that you actually care.
I like! I'll be saving this for the day my little boy is old enough to play with them :)
Awesome.
Thanks Matt!
David, after our email exchange I found it amazing that you said you had thought about it for about a year and then see a "Make Something" logo shirt from a year ago.
Great video Dave. And the birdhouse looks cool. My next projects, after finishing my adventure with my stairs, are for my grandson so I am building a Lego box, a birdhouse, a pirate chest, and of course a whole bunch of Lincoln logs. Loved those logs when I was small. Had 4 brothers so we had a ton of those things. Unfortunately I think quite a few were lost to a fire in the back yard that we "accidentally" started that also melted a few Army men standing guard. It involved a chemistry set I got for Christmas and a plan to make flares for the Army soldiers. Didn't work out well.
Wow! Crazy story! Thanks Jim!
I plead innocence. I was only 10 at the time.
Have you seen Pocket83's guide?
He starts with 1x6, cut to 10-1/2", then routs all the dadoes at once, before slicing into individual logs.
I just used this method to make a very large set for my niece, and i tell you, when you're making lots, routing all of the dadoes first then slicing into logs really goes quickly.
That's what I was thinking, make the dadoes first, then cut out the logs. Makes more sense.
Creative way of making a birdhouse. I figured using wet construction grade lumber would be a poor long term choice.. but glued up it doesn't seem likely to warp.
This is a great build David. When you set the birdhouse out next spring a short update would be great.
Great idea David, I spent the most of the early 80's with Lincoln logs as one of my primary building materials. Of course Legos were the other building material of choice.
Nicely done sir.
Whoooo, throwback video! This will come in handy for Christmas
Just what I was looking for, thanks :)
That's one of the best project ideas I've seen in a long time! Oh, and the birds in my neighborhood drive Pontiac Firebirds. And I love the dip stain technique. It's way better than messing with brushes or towels.
Thanks Zac!
really nice! I'm going to add this to my list.
Nice make! Wasps seem to like birdhouses more than the birds around my town. XD
Bravo! David Two Shoes!
Love how you shot at produced this...well written, well executed in Layout and Design...shades of Diresta... But that's Minor...
CHEERS TO YOU....
I'm Buying you a Brew...
I love this got my first grandson coming in June he is getting some of these
Kind of amazed at all you just did in this instructional video! Like how you speed it up! and add in some humor!
Thanks Todd!
Very cool. We haven't bought Lincoln logs until we saw them at rummage sale for $10 my husband and I thought it was a great deal so we bought them for our daughter. She's two.
just what I need for my1 garden ailway
Nice video. Thank you. I will be making some for my son. When you were making you dados in the logs you mentioned that some had blow out. Perhaps a table saw pass on each side of the dado then the router to remove the middle waste.
CLASSIC! good idea!
Excellent... Cheers...
Maybe make the front wall solid and paint the door with black paint zoo it looks like the full size door you have. Then drill a round hole, 1" to. 1 1/4". This will let the smaller birds in and keep the bigger black birds and j's out.
What a great idea
Love it Dave! Curious to see what it looks like in a few years after its weathered.. I put deck stain on one I built the other day and water beads off it like crazy... But I like the idea of regular stain and paint. Great Job Man!
Fantastic!
Yours look better than the real ones. I would have done everything brown.
Great video have to let our mutual friend Mr.Potts know you inspired me to make this for my kids.
Even though my wife can't stand stepping on them.
Mr Sam Potts?
Yes I work with him.
Sam and I go way back. He's a good man.
GOOD job bruh!
i was just looking at poorly made naff birdhouses at a garden centre today and thought, i can make nicer versions of this... and WAH LAH i come home and see your vid. nicely done. im gonna make a few of these. :)
What a fun idea,
I wish my kids still played with Lincoln Logs. There getting to old for them.
regards,
Bob
Bob, why do they have to be for your kids? Adults can play with Lincoln Logs too.
Excellent Point,
I like the way you think.
Regards,
Bob
Bird Houses need to be cleaned out occasionally so a base that can be removed is better.
Great Video! I was hoping to get the details in your free plans but seems that they are no longer available?
Ooga cha cha!!! I'm doing this!!! Thanks.
VARY COOL ! THANKS
Great project!
btw (Gables not Eves)
Meh, this project's for the birds... I love it though! Very cool, David.
Well done video and project David. I wonder if my Ford Falcon could be parked there?
Thanks OP. I about to try this myself. To prevent the logs from splitting when running the 3/4 router, why not router a very long dado, then cut the logs to width?
Cool Dude
Ok - couple more things - those are gables, not eves. Two quick cuts with a saw and and a couple quick knocks with a sharp chisel and the gables would be rocking - perhaps even more quickly. Suggestions only. Thanks again.
awesome!! :)
Great video, Dave. It's so much fun building those model houses. Are you hanging that thing up in a tree, or what? That would look cool.
Darbin Orvar Thanks! We might but will probably wait until after winter. I would imagine all the stain and spray paint is slightly toxic until it all off-gasses.
Lol... I think we should call that staining technique " do-do stains" ... I do it like that @ times, and it works well:)
What great fun
Would it have been easier to cut the dado's first, then rip the logs to length?
Off to get a 3/4" dado bit. Awesome work.
John Becker YES!
How do you get two 3/4" pieces from a 2x6. A 2x6 is only 1-1/2" thick and the saw takes away about 3/32" which give you one piece of 3/4" stock but not enough for the 2nd piece. 3/4"+ 3/4" + 3/32" = 1-19/32" which is more than 1-1/2". What magic do you use?
i like your persona so much better now lol
