  • This is how I installed a traditional breathable Limecrete floor in my cottage. There was very little information on how to do this and the materials are very expensive - so of course I was eager to give it a try!
One of the main considerations when installing a limecrete floor is the amount of earth that has to be removed before adding the insulation (in this case Leca expanded clay aggregate) This can be over double the depth of a standard insulated concrete floor as extra depth is required for proper insulation when using traditional materials. Digging deeper also means more earth to dispose of which will add to the cost over that of a modern concrete floor.
This video follows the process from start to finish, removing the original solid concrete floor, digging out the earth to the correct depth, adding hessian sheeting and Leca insulation, putting the limecrete layer on top followed by the lime screed and also ensuring the lime screed set properly during the month after installation.
This is what happened installing my first Limecrete Floor and what I learned about the process.
