This is transcendent. This Pokemon speedrun basically beats the game without playing Pokemon at all. You don't even do any battles beyond the tutorial. BDSP really is bringing back the absolute brokenness of gen 1 and from a speedrun perspective it's incredible
@@jessamynroguski9649 I'm pretty sure they mostly used the same code just with a fresh coat of paint. So you can rest assured knowing that 90% of glitches were directly taken from the original games.
@@BlueSodaPop_ well id agree with you if this were still a 2D game but because they had to make the change to 3D that seems to make things tricky Even if they did use the same codes they would have to make some big adjustments to convert pixel sprites into 3D models Hell they even strait up *changed* some big parts like the tunnles and the pokémon contests (even if the change was removing a lot of the fun aspects of them...) and not to mention the game corner got repurposed because of the whole "cant put gambling into a kids game" thing that wasnt a big deal back in the original version (despite my agreement, i really have fond memories of dicking around there)

Busses operate on a very very specific schedule such that every 0.35 seconds, a bus departs a station and takes its passengers to the following level, so no matter how quickly you play a level, you have to wait for the next bus to get there. What this means is that when you speedrun the game, you don't have to play each level perfectly to avoid losing time, you just have to play each level well enough to get on the same bus as somebody who did play perfectly.

Not just the tech, the entire history that unfolded in about 2 weeks; it's nuts, other games went years to get the level of progress that Pokemon BDSP had in half a month.

not really, the early glitches are endearing because they're the product of a fairly small team trying to get as much onto the game cartridge. For glitches like these to come out in a modern game is frankly pathetic and shows that it's little more than a rushed cash grab, and barely a new game worth £60 at all
This is far more glitched then the gen 4 Sinnoh games, but the existence of a void glitch is nostalgic. For years it was the only way to catch Darkrai on New Moon Island. Surfing on land is also a bit of a pokemon tradition, but that's usually the result of an incorrectly marked tile and it has no exploit potential.
The fact all of this is possible goes to show how hard they dropped the ball on this remake and it breaks my heart cos gen 4 is where i truly got into the pokémon games

Often this takes advantage of crashes or other malfunctions to access that part of the game's memory, which performs the code you wrote there. SethBling has a very good video showing ACE being used in Super Mario World, and imo it's a really good example since he shows/visualizes and explains everything happening on a technical level.

Back in the original nintendo DS days, it was possible to "ghost cancel" consumables in FF3 remake, so you'd press A and UP at the same time on either the top left or top right storage slot to both load the equipment screen and use an item at the same time (if you did it right, the equipment screen flashes for a moment) and then after that hit B to cancel and it returns that consumable into your inventory, but the original one was not consumed (because the equipment screen was called) so you end up duplicating that item.
He's the mightiest of them all. I'm not actually sure but I don't see why you couldn't, Ib could probably clarify, but my understanding is that Turtwig is selected because its Pokeball is the first one the cursor selects and moving to pick a different starter would lose time.

The sandwich feels like it's the wrong metaphor for how the glitch works. If you have two pieced of bread on top of a piece of ham that's not a sandwich, that's a failure. From what I understand, the "sandwich" seems to work more like a cake. You know, the layered food thing that can have repeated patterns, that stacks and that has a lot more ways to be served while still being called cake. Whoever called this a "sandwich" had no clue how food works. Edit: or, again, since you have to layer and unlayer it to progress, how about calling it a deck? You can use red and black cards for reference. You stack them face up and then take them back in the same order they're stacked. You don't undo sandwiches either...
It's called a sandwich because in the original version of the run that used them, it went bread bread bread bread ham bread bread so it was pretty bread-heavy, but at least the ham being in the middle made sense

The way you describe what a script is is mostly correct, but only if the game does actually use an interpreted scripting language for its events instead of just hardcoded events. Does it? I can't really find anything online...
Hmm. I'm inclined to believe it's just native code that the events are written in that the game jumps to, which would have similar effects anyway (like leaving the game in an unexpected state).
Haven't finished watching the video, but I immediately bought a 3 month gift box for an ex of mine because she's a total weeb. When I checked immediately following the order, it said that I had an active subscription with a future charge date (gifts explicitly say that they are not recurring billing), but after a couple of minutes my account updated to show that the subscription was deactivated. So it looks like the billing system is a little janky, but correct.
Does this still even work? I believe menu storage got patched twice. It wouldnt surprise me if it was still in the game, but it must be a pain for speedrunners to have to stay on a single patch

The way you describe what a script is is mostly correct, but only if the game does actually use an interpreted scripting language for its events instead of just hardcoded events. Does it? I can't really find anything online...
Hmm. I'm inclined to believe it's just native code that the events are written in that the game jumps to, which would have similar effects anyway (like leaving the game in an unexpected state).

Haven't finished watching the video, but I immediately bought a 3 month gift box for an ex of mine because she's a total weeb. When I checked immediately following the order, it said that I had an active subscription with a future charge date (gifts explicitly say that they are not recurring billing), but after a couple of minutes my account updated to show that the subscription was deactivated. So it looks like the billing system is a little janky, but correct.
I understand this as overlapping game states.
Does this still even work? I believe menu storage got patched twice. It wouldnt surprise me if it was still in the game, but it must be a pain for speedrunners to have to stay on a single patch
