The first line gives it away: "He said 'I'll love you till I die."
I think they totally missed the point of the whole story. I don't think they understood that the man died. That's how and why he finally stopped loving her today. I'd say probably 8 out of every 10 people who react to this song don't listen closely enough to the lyrics and when the song is over they have no idea what happened to the guy. They don't get that the man longed for the woman's return but the only time she returned was to be present at his funeral where he was "all dressed up to go away".
@@Code9 Sadly, yes.
@Code 9
Yup, you are more than correct. as it was our fist time to hear the song and we have some many things going on, it's hard to get the full gist of the song right away.
After hearing it a few times, it become more apparent.
Cheers
@@BritPopsReact No worries, mates and much love!
Not for everyone ... 😉
I had not been familiar with this man. Asked my mother about him and she had said he had been on top at one point but had had a severe alcohol problem. At his funeral both Alan Jackson and Vince Gill sang beautiful songs in tribute to him. Alan Jackson sang this very song, with brought a lot of tears to the audience.
He was back in top before he died… I saw him in concert singing I don’t need your rocking chair… he had apt of good years
I'm glad you enjoyed George, he's a legend and this song still brings me to tears. Another favorite of mine from George is "The One I Loved Back Then" also known as the Corvette song. The song focuses on man's fascination with fast cars and beautiful women, and certain "similarities" between the two and features some vocal gymnastics by George with a humorous twist.
George is not only a Legendary Singer and Songwriter…George was a Mentor to so many Artist in the History of Country Music.
County has its roots in British folk music, especially Scottish ballads it’s your own history
My mom dated him back in the 70s, before I was ever thought of lol. I've got a sweet picture of them together....but yes he had a drinking problem during that time and after dating off and on for a year or 2 she finally had enough.....love this man's music tho, definitely a legend!❤
What a voice. He just tears your heart apart when he sings. You definitely know it's George when he opens his mouth. Great reaction guys. Thanks for your time and your thoughts. 😊🤗✌
Hi from Canada 🇨🇦, guys. Looks like you completely missed the meaning of this song. He said at the start “ he said I’ll love you till I die”. Later his friend said..” they placed a wreath upon his door” ,then they “carried him away”. He died and she came to his funeral. He stopped loving her today because he died. You need to have a second listen.
Glad you wrote that- I refuse to watch reactions where they just don’t get it
And why do you need to rate the song ? Its not a competition or any of that nature.....everytime....never mind I pass..thanks anyways....ta
It happens so much because people don’t really listen
That’s COUNTRY...Old Country is the best....PERIOD!
Agreed 😊❤
Love the story of this song, as sad as it is. He did love her until he died, as he said he would.
George didn’t want to record this song because it was so sad, he said no one would want to hear it. It went to number one I believe. ❤ It’s played at a lot of funerals in the USA, sometimes as just an instrumental without the words. I absolutely have loved this song since I was a kid.
It has been said that when George Jones sings, the band cries, the audience cries and the roof starts leaking. Also, Waylon Jennings said that if we could all sing like we wanted we would all sound like George Jones. Not sure if these are exact quotes, but you get the idea. It's been great watching you guys explore country music. I know it isn't for everyone, all the time. So thanks for your due diligence and honest opinions.
For sure
That is for sure
You’re right about listening to Tammy Wynette next on your country journey. Crying Steel Guitar, Take Me To Your World. Tammy with George, Two Story House, Golden Ring.
You missed the plot guys! First line “He said I’ll love you till I die.” Being dressed up is talking about his clothes while in a casket. Being carried away is talking about the pallbearers carrying his casket to his grave. A wreath on the door was an old southern tradition in the southern US when someone died. He stopped loving her when he died. Her visiting references her attending the funeral.
When the writers first presented the song to Jones he said "that thing'll never sell. It's too damn sad." Years later after it became the monster hit of his career he said "boy, was I wrong."
'Where's my bleeping horse!' 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That's all I have, because that comment killed me 😅
@EnderOllie 4
There goes the "family channel" leaving on horseback
@@BritPopsReact I feel the need to clap two coconut halves together a la Monty Python... 🥥 🥥
The entire song is summed up by the first and last lines: "He said 'I'll love you till I die" and "He stopped loving her today".
No show Jones doing that song live always gives me the goose bumps
In the song he's dead.
He sings I went to see him just today.
Oh but I didn't see no tears.
He was all dressed up to go away.
First time I'd seen him smile in years.
The next verse: they placed a wreath upon his door. Usually you place a wreath on the door to symbolize a death.
Country music is absolutely infested with wonderful sad songs . . . . . The saddest, try "Concrete Angel" by Martina McBride but, do the video.
George almost didn’t record this song!! He said it was morbid to sad… but he did! And so the story goes on….
Love this song and George Jones 🤗
If I remember correctly, Alan Jackson sang this at George's funeral.
Yes, this song makes the top of polls all the time, but country has other sad songs that usually make the chart. One of those is 'Your Cheatin' Heart' by Hank Williams Sr, the Godfather of Country Music.
At George Jone’s funeral Vince Gill sang a tribute- Go Rest High on That Mountain which Vince wrote about his brother dying. Highly recommend you watch that one 👍
They laid a wreath at his door . . . And they will carry him away . . . And “she” came to the funeral!!
This particular song " He Stopped Loving Her Today" is ABSOLUTELY AND POSITIVELY THE GREATEST COUNTRY AND WESTERN SONG OF ALL TIME!!! NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT WHATSOEVER!!!
I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND AND SUGGEST that you consider listening to "The Grand Tour" performed by George Jones as well
You should listen to Alan Jackson sing this song at George Jones funeral… it will tear your heart out…
Story of my life , MAUREEN!!!!
You two don't have a clue ,back out of country, listen to the words,that might help
You should give a listen to Elvis Costello sing "A Good Year for the Roses"....a country song sung by a great Brit!
@wpollock1
We both know that song very well and we grew up with it, so it's a bit hard to do a reaction as we know it so well.
Glad you enjoy it.
Cheers
He said he would love her till he died.. in the end he had passed she came to his funeral..
It’s a parlor game to see many reactors flail away trying to make sense of this song. The plot is rather simple. He said he’d love her til he died. He died today. Therefore, he stopped loving her today.
PLEASE react to George Jones "The one I loved back then"( The Corvette song)!
This song always chokes me. It reminds me of my late sister. It was her husbands favorite - for obvious reasons. She was the first family member to move to Nashville. We moved to East Tennessee (from the northeast in the late 70s
You should listen to the version when hes not old and an alcoholic
He has a unique nick name.'Possom',it came from an album cover showing a side view of him,it was said he had beady eyes and nose like a possum.
Been listening to this one since it was new. Now that I'm old(er), I wonder...is this love or is it obsession?
I got your fucking horse! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BP1, I know it is sometime around now, my Taurus brother. George is my husbands favorite, Hank and my sons are quite fond of him too. Tammy Wynette "Stand By Your Man" is a MUST listen!! A nice clean channel? Ok let's change that with Ghost "Year Zero" UNCUT! I have to see your faces at the ending scene of the video 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have a hard time believing that they don't know 'Stand by your Man' surely EVERYONE knows that one. And in my admittedly limited knowledge of country music (as it's really not my cup of tea), that's the best I've ever heard.
I don't know how you have that effin horse. Last time I looked, I had it tethered in my backyard 😉
@@tundiel That damn horse is a louse! I swear he was just tethered in MY yard. We'll have to start B1 a GoFund me for a Fucking Horse of his own!
@@chueysmama2622 hahaa, yes! He needs an effing horse!
(Little dude just read over my shoulder and asked me why everyone one was swearing. When he was 3 (ish) he decided that that we should say 'flowers' instead of the 'f' bomb. Little dude can often be heard saying 'what the flowers??' when he's frustrated 🤣🤣🤣)
Also, a heads up. Keep an eye out for a reaction from the boys to a song called 'Animal Flow'. Probably not your cup of tea BUT the video is crazy, and I'm going to cry laughing at their faces. I predict eye-popping and jaw-dropping galore. It's going to be hilarious 😂
@@tundiel Oh, I'll watch it for sure now!
@@chueysmama2622 I'm going to be laughing my butt off 🤣 😂 😆
Wreath on his door should be the clue. Dressed up, no tears, and being carried away should be the next clue
You have to listen to one of the greatest country songs ever written. Hank Williams "I'm So Lonesome i Could Cry" Very poetic song. I love George but Hank was considered the greatest singer/ song writer.
So many people miss the first line of this song (and Paradise by the Dashboard Light as well) and thus miss the entire point of the song. "He said 'I'll love you till I die'" and the title He Stopped Loving Her Today tell you exactly what happened. And yet people seem to miss it. Oh well, just remember that the first line of Paradise... is "I remember everything as if it happened only yesterday." That's important to understanding the end.
You guys went old school this time.
George Jones is known as one of the greatest artists ever.
When this came out, even if a person wasn't a huge country fan, I'm betting they knew this song.
Although a lot of people do miss the whole message of the song.😢
"Where's my f*cking horse!" 😅😂
If you want powerful songs and vocals, among others, Martina McBride is another artist you'll be amazed by.
Like there are many genres of rock, there are many genres of country.
I remember my grandmother back b4 I was born .. couldn't wait to see George in the 60's she was so excited.. he never showed up.... he was too drunk.
Think they got it?
One of the greatest country songs of all time!
To continue your country journey I would throw in some newer songs as well, such as Luke Combs Beautiful Crazy or Beer never broke my heart just to see the new/old contrast
You guys know that he stopped loving her because he died! Right?
Loved your reaction. My favorite George Jones song. Appreciate you guys
George didn't want to record this because he said it was so sad that no one would want to listen to it but unfortunately a lot of people don't realize how sad it is because they don't understand what he's saying. "I went to see him just today/ Oh, but I didn't see no tears" - There were no tears because the man was dead.
"All dressed up to go away" - He is dressed in a shroud in preparation for being buried.
"First time I'd seen him smile in years" - Many undertakers who are preparing a body to be viewed by the family will put a slight smile on the face of the deceased.
He stopped loving her today - It starts out with "He said, 'I'll love you till I die'" and then it says "He stopped loving her today" so if he stopped loving her he must have died.
They placed a wreath upon his door - In the southern part of the United States, it was the custom to put a wreath on the front door so people would know there had been a death of someone in the household.
And soon they'll carry him away - The pall bearers will carry him to the grave.
You know, she came to see him one last time/and we all wondered if she would - She came to his funeral and people had been speculating as to whether she show up.
And it kept runnin' through my mind/ "This time he's over her for good" - He's over her for good because he's dead.
Practically everything in this song says that he died without actually saying he died and a lot of people just do not get it.
Sorry I missed this reaction two weeks ago . I was a teenager in the 70s I had one country album" George Jones Greatest Hits" and my mother thought that was really odd , my siblings and I were into British Rock and Southern Rock Blues. My father was in the Air Force so I grew up all over the United States, so when I lived in the Deep south ( Alabama, Mississippi ) they would put a wreath upon their door ; to alert you that a family member passed away. CARRY ON 😊
Banjos are in Bluegrass music.
Would love to see your reaction to George's "White Lighting"! A real fun, upbeat song and one of my favorite George Jones songs. Enjoyed your reaction to one of the best heart wrenching country tunes ever.
George Jones hated this song. He fought against recording this song but was pressured by his record company and his manager to do this. A banjo is not normally in traditional country music but what they called bluegrass. But this was an enormous hit for him. George was a alcoholic and didn’t do a lot of his shows. He was called no show Jones
"The Dance" by Garth Brooks is kinda/sorta like this song . . . . . and, is just as good!
i much prefer his performances and the recording from when he was much younger
I love the Possum! Original GOAT❤️🔥 Great reaction, & liked! A 'slide steel guitar' & harmonica are staples in 'real' traditional country music like this. I have to mention as i'm sure folks who know this song are curious (bc it wasn't mentioned) if you understood the reason he stopped loving her was because he passed away? 🤔;-) There are So many great songs of his, it's hard to pick a favorite (well, besides this one lol) to recommend next. Here are a few suggestions from top of my fav's list: "Bartender Blues", "The Grand Tour", "The One I Loved Back Then (the Corvette song)", "Why, Baby, Why" (one of his very early ones), "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes", & "It's Been a Good Year For The Roses (feat Alan Jackson)" ❤ P.s. In todays times, you generally Always want to hear (for ex) Chris Stapleton live versions. However, when listening to older (old time) country music, in my experience, the studio versions generally produce a better sound ;-) PPS, the banjo is more commonly used in the bluegrass music genre ;-) If you're feeling daring & want to check out some Serious pickin & grinnin, Please do check out modern-day GOAT, Billy Strings & band Live versions!!! These guys are Incredible! Masterfully, a guitar, a banjo, a mandolin, & an upright bass. 😁Hope this was helpful 👍Sending love from Tenn !❤
No Show Jones is a funny song he wrote that has a lot of country singer references. He earned the nickname after repeatedly having to refund money because he would be a no show at his own performances. Everyone quit coming and called him No Show Jones. He made this song after he got sober & pokes fun at himself.
It is amazing how many reactors do not get the point of this song at first listen. The instrumentals in this song are heart wrenching. He died , y'all.
A funny or maybe not so funny story about George. He used to drink very heavily, his wife hid his car keys, so he jumped on his lawn mower and drove to the liquor store. I know he made a video poking fun at himself which shows him doing that very thing. I cant recall the name of the song.
For crying out loud straighten out your glasses!!!
But yeah....this is one of the most iconic songs in country music ever!!!!
Hell, I wasnt even born when this song came out and I've sang this song since I was a youngster.
Maybe his eyebrows are just crooked. Lol
@@SeekingHisWill78 🤣
He did eventually straighten em.
@TrulyUnfortunate
I have to wear them that way, my eyes are not level 😉
Cheers
@TrulyUnfortunate
The headphones push them up, it's just one of those things, plus I am flipped on the screen , so I see myself in reverse.
so did you pick up that "he stopped loving her today" because he died? the first line in the song gives this away but the majority of reactors miss this. I think this and of course George Jones' voice and delivery is what makes this the "best country song..." it's a real tear jerker:) Nice reaction!
So much modern music is just mindless gibberish, they are probably not used to songs that have well thought out lyrics.
I think they missed that.
It amazes me how many dont get it.
@@TrulyUnfortunate Yep, makes me crazy! It seems so obvious! I stopped watching reactions to this. Puts me in a spin every time! Almost didn't watch this but their one of my favorite channels.
Get on your horse and drink your milk. 😂😂😂
I don’t personally think it’s the greatest of all time, but it is a great song
He DIED FROM A BROKEN HEART 💔!!!!
I planned to watch your reactions to see when that 'a-ha' moment happened ... but I read the comments first and ruined my surprise. 🙄 ... I watched anyway.
How about something from Frank Ifield ... you know, one of your country (brit)singers. "I Remember You"
@Mason Steele
Ah sorry about that, we are not the sharpest tools in the box 🙄
Thanks for watching
I will take a glass of wine
Wait did bp1 say he has issues with banjo????? There's a small bridge from bluegrass to country, but I watch due to your honesty. Keep it up. (Don williams) is another country artist thats worth a mention maybe not a review subject but good in my opinion? Roy Clark jams on banjo so does Steve Martin (actor) enjoy guys thank you.
Haha! Watch tomorrow night…. You will smile!! 👍🏻👍🏻
I didn't get a real read on whether they understood the song. Do they get that he only stopped loving her because he died?
@Melody Daniel
Hi Melody, yup we got that part, we were in shock that it was this was classed as the best Country song ever.
That was why we were a bit confused.
Maybe just us Brits don't quite get it but we have heard others we have enjoyed more.
Thanks for watching
He finally straightened himself out after many years of alcohol and drug problems, after his 4th marriage to Nancy in 1983. His marriage to Tammy Wynette was, shall we say, not without incident ! Once, she was going out on tour when he was attempting ( again ) to kick the booze, she left him with the housekeeper in their rural & now alcohol free home and took all the keys to their vehicles ... three days later, he was pulled over on the roadside, by Police after driving 5 miles on their sit-on lawnmower trying to get to a local bar !!
My favorite George Jones song: "If My Heart Had Windows." Patty Loveless did a beautiful cover of it, also.
My husband one request was if he passed away before me I play this song at his funeral. We did just that on January 18 2017. I cry every time I hear it since then. Because he stopped loving me that day but my love for him still goes on.
That’s is lovely, sorry for your loss and after watching it back again it’s an amazingly written song, big love ❤️ x
Traditional country music always has a steel guitar in it. This one has a steel guitar in it. George Jones is atruecountrylegend. .
If you liked the real George, try listening to Tony Jackson sing one of George's tunes The GRAND TOUR. he's a young black man who sounds like a reincarnation of the real George Jones. I promise you'll love it!
Just so yzll know, there's a 98.879% chance George was piss drunk on this.
thanks - but did you GET it?? he stopped loving her b/c he DIED... lol George was known as a "character" - alcoholic, F-up ( he even wrote a song about himself "they call me no-show Jones" -- one song I really love is "The King is Gone" - give a listen if you have time & inclination.. .important to pay attention to George's lyrics...) Much appreciated!
Banjos are in Bluegrass, Horses are in Western, 👍
Steel Guitar.
While this is a great rendition the studio version is better.
I personally like his songs *If Drinking Don't Kill Me (Her Memories Will)* AND *I Just Don't Give a Damn* better than this one, but this is really good also. These Lyrics are a hoot see below:
The bars are all closed it's four in the morning
Must have shut 'em all down by the shape that I'm in
I lay my head on the wheel and the horn begins honking
*The whole neighborhood knows that I'm home drunk again*
… And if drinking don't kill me her memory will
I can't hold out much longer the way that I feel
With the blood from my body I could start my own still
And if drinking don't kill me her memory will.
yup, you clearly didn't get it. Other comments have explained the song, so I won't. Thanks for taking a shot. While I wasn't a hard core Country Western fan growing up, many influential people and events in my life led me to be in the presence of it. So, I was familiar with the likes of George Jones, Jim Ed Brown, Hank Williams (Sr. and Jr.), Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, and many others singing in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Thanks for being open to what we here in South Texas refer to as the greatest song ever in country music.
I know…. We get it now 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Tammy Wynette would be an excellent choice.
Banjos are in bluegrass not country music.
This is truly not the best rendition of George singing this.. he's older here.. but y'all get the vibe. it's true country .. listen to some Tammy.. his ex wife.. Queen of country... that George back in the day as a drunk.. abused her....
You missed the whole point of the song, that he died.
A horse? Really? This isn't a "western" song. This is a country song, or "three chords and the truth", or a song about the struggles of living. A "western" song would have horses, cowboys, details of the old west, outlaws, and lawmen. I know that for a time, "Country & Western" was the brand on anything non-pop, rock, classical, etc, but they are distinctly different.
Apparently, you boys just aren't getting the song at all. "He said I'll love you, till I die", and he did. It's a song that tells about how a man loved a woman so much, even though she split and went elsewhere, that he'd love her till his death. It tells about how he lived in the memory of the times she said "I love you" in the only thing he had left of her, the love letters by his bed. The "they placed a wreath upon his door" is from a tradition where a black wreath was put on the front door of a house to let anyone coming to the house know that someone had died and people were in mourning, so they could be respectful. "All dressed up to go away, first time I seen him smile in years" is pretty much him in his coffin, being prepared to be buried. He had gone so many years dealing with the loneliness, the longing, the living in memories of her, the depression, and now that he died and stopped loving her, he was free of all of that. It's truly sad, and it made for a great story, which is a trademark of good country music. You feel it in the lyrics, you feel it in the instruments (particularly the steel guitar), and you feel it in George's voice. That's why George Jones is part of the holy trinity of country music, accompanied by Hank Williams Sr. and Merle Haggard.
I understand you boys are just dipping your toe into country music, so you're uncultured heathens (lol, just kidding), but you got to let go of any preconceived notions you might have of the genre, listen closely, let things sink in, and absorb it before passing judgment. It is interesting to hear opinions from non-Americans, since country is a distinctly American form of music, but the roots are based in Irish, Scottish, and British folk songs from the 19th century and earlier, as well as old hymns from gospel music. Just give it more of a chance to sink in what is being said, and don't get hung up on banjos and steel guitars so much. "Country is what happens during the week, rock is what happens on the weekend" as one of my favorite country singers, Gary Allan, would say.
I know I am gonna get flack for this but even though I know he is a legend---Mr Jones does nothing for me. Great reaction Gents. Have a tremendous weekend!
@Michael Whelan
Cheers Michael, with all the great Country artists and songs out there, we were kind of confused to hear this is the greatest Country song of all time.
Hope your weekend is going great too
So you missed the point he died
Once again you missed it. But your British smugness gets in the way. But that being said i appreciate your honesty. I shouldn't expect that you might get it. Crack on.
You guys should not react to old country music as this song went right over your heads. Old country songs tell stories and this story is so sad.
@patrickterry779
Righhhhhht, so how does anyone learn anything new without checking it out.
Hummmmm.the story was OK, he died, that happens on a daily basis.
@@BritPopsReact yes he died but you are still missing the point of the story. He loved her, she left him, he spent the rest of his life hurting and went crazy. He would love her until he died. It’s deeper than not liking a banjo. Y’all are either just cold or don’t get it, I’m thinking the later.
You were so busy talking about horses, did you even listen to the words, Notice that the guy loved the woman that left him till he died.
This is the second song I've listened to of your reactions. Please listen to the songs and give a reaction. You totally missed a beautiful story by jabbering throughout and not listening.

Not the kind of REACTION I was expecting. BORING.
That was a 10 all day. He fucking died.
@Joe Skinner
Shit happens man and the song was not a 10 for us.
Thanks for checking it out though
I understand that they are a couple of blokes that have never heard Country before, so their reactions are interesting.
What really gets me though is they seem to have no basic comprehension skills.
I mean, they HEAR words but they don’t seem to understand the MEANING of the words when they are combined in a sentence.
I’ll give an an example;
“He slammed his front door behind him.”
The MEANING is, HE WAS UPSET ABOUT SOMETHING WHEN HE LEFT HIS HOUSE
They seem kind of dimwitted.
A lifetime of too much tea?
@Amaberean
Wow, you really laid it on us here, huh.
A "lifetime of too much tea"? really so what does a lifetime of drinking too much coffee do to you?
Dimwitted because we missed out some of the meanings during the first time hearing a song, taking it in, thinking of things to say during the pause and watching the video.
We have a lot going on, how many times have you listened to this song to have time to understand exactly what it's all about?
Just saying...
Cheers
@@BritPopsReact Do you really need to hear this song MORE than once to realize that he died?
And “soon they’ll CARRY him away” doesn’t tell you anything?
SERIOUSLY?
This isn’t Einstein stuff. An eight year old can (and does) understand that. I used to think the “slowness” I always noticed was just due to the culture difference. I guess not, because you really DIDN’T get it.
@Amaberean
I think we just switched off as the song was quite boring and as for being the greatest Country song ever, wow that does such a disservice to all the other great Country songs we have heard.
I thought that line meant he was drunk and needed a little help getting home
Our particular favourite and one that really touched our hearts and we felt the lyrics deeply was a great "Toby Keith" song
"Red Solo Cup", the truly spoke to us and even our slowness was able to keep up with that one.
All the very best to you and don't take it to heart, as we didn't, it's just our humour.
Cheers off for another cup of tea now
