NES Longplay [266] Faxanadu

    Played by JagOfTroy
A difficult platform action/RPG game that involves some heavy grinding at certain points in order to acquire items.
Xanadu is the original game in the series.
Famicon (Japanese Nintendo) + Xanadu = Faxanadu
Just about every single item and magic was acquired in this game though I skipped getting one particular magic power since it doesn't really add anything special and it would of taken a lot of boring grinding in order to buy it. However, since it isn't the most powerful one I felt it wasn't needed in order to make this a satisfactory longplay.
In the port from Famicon to NES, they changed a bit of the game to remove all Religious references. There was a man on a Crucifix whenever you visited the Guru, there was a cross on the front of the 'church' so you knew where to find the Guru.
The Guru would be dangling a religious symbol from his hand (The Cross). Items also had their names changed.
The opening theme is saved for the end game sequence since it plays as an extended version during the finale. -

This game just had so much mystery and interest to it. I found this game at a pawn shop around the mid to late 90s. The cream colored cover and shield instantly caught my attention, I felt like if I found a treasure. And no doubt I realized I did as soon as I started playing it. Till this day it is the best NES game I have ever played.

I had a running deal with my cousins that I could buy used NES games from them for 20$, and I think this was one of them. For a 6 or 7 year old kid this game was so large and complex, I never had a strategy guide or Nintendo Power issue to go along with it.

I had also hoped it wouldn't be a real world situation for it's not laid out like a video game where it's possible for a preprogrammed hero to save the world from the evil one seeking to enslav all of us. so many hidden secrets you miss. simplest one: instead of paying doctor 2500 golds, the me as t/bread guy charges 200. you b uy from him 3X and magic and life are redtored. Instead of buying full plate armor, if you go into the coffee shop/lounge, one of the patrons GIVES you full plate. and the biggest. most extremely helpful hint is right in the beginning of the game, the king gives you 1500 golds. if you leave and go right back in, over n over n over he keeps giving you 1500 golds. so all the repetitive grinding you do for your magic shield can be avoided AND you can buy death spell. Worth it, if you are going to kill same enemies over and over. try it next time. we'll worth it if you are going to build gold. lastly the black onyx actually makes your hits much much WEAKER!! lessons of years of playing this addicting/irritating master piece. TY - Russ

    • @Ouroboros112

black onyx decrease damage only with the first 3 armor. black onyx + battle armor = Decreases damage recieved by way over 50%. The king only give you 1500 gold if you're out of gold, the trick is to go see the king get the gold buy your stuff then die while keeping your stuff. Repeat the process as needed.

Fun Fact: if you spend every single gold piece in the starting town, you can go back to the King of Elves and not only will he talk to you as if it's your first time doing so, but he'll also give you another 1500 Gold Pieces (I have no idea if this was intentionally left in the game, it was a bug that no one found out about or what, but it always amuses me every time I play this game.) While newcomers might find it a bit difficult to fully understand how the feel of the gameplay is, once you do understand and master it, it's easily one of the best NES games you'll ever play!

The only problem with this game is that it's over too quickly. :P
I wish they would have made it so that you have to return to the King by yourself, seeing how each area of the Tree has returned to normal and the Mist is gone and all that.

In the first area, you could spend all 1500 gold and get replenished with 1500 more several times by seeing the king allowing you to start with more supplies. Yes, once you pass several areas, you're blocked from returning. I too thought it would be cool to be able to walk all the way back to the start or perhaps get a set of wing boots that don't run out.

i loved this game as a kid. granted, it is old and the graphics are weak. However, I write novels as a hobby and this game was one that inspired one of my favorite books. the idea of a world tree; that it is polluted by some supernatural force. the ideas of towns and communities existing in such a world tree and the journey to the top of that tree; these are fantastical and awesome concepts. faxanadu is a game that does not get enough credit

Christmas 1989. 7th grade. One of my favorites. Classic gameplay, great music, good graphics that aren't cartoonish, a huge world, your sprite changes with your gear... so many things to like.
I also got the Power Glove and U-Force that Christmas. lol

This is what you do to fix the Pendant bug in all versions of the game: it appears the error lies in the fact that the instruction given was a BNE (Branch on Not Equal) rather than the intended BEQ (Branch on Equal).
Change the value at address $8879 in the program ROM from D0 to F0. If you are using a Game Genie, the code to use which addresses this issue is EYNEOAEI.

In the room 13:40 you can get the mattoc for free, if you kill all the enemys, but it has to be in the right fourth screen. Meaning that if you kill all enemys and it dont shows up, go back a screen and back and kill all again. Within 4 times it will show up. There are lots of "free item screens" in the game. It is especially good when you find wingboots wich is expensive. There are also Oiniment and to be found.

Back in 1989, in the US, kids were allowed to buy cigarettes and smoke. I was 17 and even took smoke breaks with my high school teachers at the time I was playing this game as a new release on nes. I quit smoking years ago so I'm still here and without the heart trouble I probably would have had if I would had kept smoking.

At the start, if he had spent that last 100 on a key, he would of been exactly zero money, and you could go to the king and he'd give you the speech again, but also give you 1500 golds again. A head start on farming anyhow, being a glitch though, I'm not sure if he wanted to show it off or didn't know about it back when this was posted.

Maybe +JagOfTroy could re-do this to show us that? Nintendo Power actually did make mention of this trick.
From NP magazine (Nov/Dec 1989) Classified Information section:
Agent #710 says that with the first 1500 Golds the King gives you, buy a Hand Dagger, three Red Potions, an Elixir and three J Keys. You'll have spent all your coins and if you meet the King again, he will give you 1500 more Gold Coins to spend. Next, buy the Deluge and spend the rest of your Gold on a combination of Dried Meat, Martial Arts Lessons and Magic. By defeating the small, spiny creatures with an endless supply of Magic and the Deluge, you'll be able to build your experience to incredible levels.

The 3 most disheartening flaws of this game are; the point of the game is unclear, the pendant makes you weaker instead of stronger, and the infamous flying boots problem, which is that the higher your level is, the lower the amount of seconds the flying boots make you fly, resulting in a scenario in which, for a short time at the start of the game, you can't level up, due to having to have a certain number of seconds of flight to be able to accomplish the game's plot.

Literally googling nes flying boots pops up with its name lol the simplest search, and it took me like 3 years of casual on and off searching to find it.
