That’s what gardening is all about❤️⭐️👍 To share the excitement of growing things and to relish our neighbors, family and friends delight in experiencing the same.
this grows wild in my country. i have gathered the fruit and boiled it down by 75% it keeps well and tastes like a combination of cherries and tomatoes. i have made a beef stew with the paste. fantastic!
A delicious fruit. I found a lot of this tree in the brazil forests. A tip to grow from seeds is gather a lot of beans and put in a bowl with water and await the beans start grow, after that, you can beat the beans in the blender and drop the beans juice where you planted the seeds. the beans will be with a lot of growing hormon.
***** Thank you as always! It's fun when you get to eat the food that you grow, no matter what it is, right? Looking forward to watching more of your videos! :D
I bought two small trees from the local nursery quite a while ago. They both turn into quite large trees. One of them produces lots of fruits while the other one just sat there looking pretty and not much fruits ! From the one with lots of fruits, I now have a garden full of such trees beside the usual suspects such as Guava and citruses. They are very hardy and not particularly precious about the soil. But water is essential. Adequate to plenty of it meant a good crop. I do find it really easy to grow. Seeds will grow true-to-type. My friends are constantly curious about the bright red fruits. All but a couple of them thought the fruits are disgusting. Those who appreciate the taste, asked for a tree for two, and I always obliged. So now there are many of such trees spread around my town. Taste wise, it is a cross between mango and orange, and rather sweet.
That’s what gardening is all about❤️⭐️👍 To share the excitement of growing things and to relish our neighbors and friends delight in experiencing the same
It tasted like Miami to me. Only place Ive seen it. People think it’s just for birds and don’t harvest in anyway. An extremely popular hedge is what they are used for. I pick and eat as I walk down a sidewalk for example. The ones not taken by birds are just all over the ground/sidewalk
Really nice fruit, nick named the Brazilian Cherry in Australia. It's so yummy and full of vitamin C, The birds love it and spread the seeds around in near my home. Thanks for the video Wendi! Happy Gardening Marty Ware
+martysgarden Oh yes, they are packed with vitamin C and soo fruitilicious! How cool you have some wild growing! How many times does it fruit thorough the year?
Hi Wendi, they fruit twice a year, which is wonderful. The tree I planted is currently growing at the last place I rented. I will have to go and check it out again, maybe even take a cutting!
I will just buy another Wendi, I like to leave gardens better after I leave. That way I leave it better than when I left. I also left a 6ft Avocado tree, hopefully it will fruit and one day I will return to reap the rewards,,hahaha. I am friends with the property owner. Watching your green smoothie video at the moment, very cool!
I miss my Surinam Cherry tree -- i use to stuff myself when i was out cutting grass ---- and put the rest of the ripe ones in the fridge till the next night ... :) BUT -- Hurricane Katrina got it now ... :(
Glad you enjoyed the Suriname cherry I watched the video. My newest home in Clearwater has a 7 foot hedge the length of my yard. It's well established. How are you able to provide such vast amounts of knowledge in your video content? I'm the durian guy. I started growing durian on big island Hawaii, then moved back to Florida. Have you been to our Vietnamese community in st Petersburg FL or Pinellas park? Weekends have farmers market of mostly Vietnamese, Lao, Phillipines fruits and plants. Mike
Our house in Clearwater, which is zone 9, considered sub-tropical, we had two well established bushes (small trees, actually) they didn't drop their leaves in winter. Ours was the red variety, I don't believe they ever turned black, at least not prior to falling off the branch. Some years it would be loaded with fruit. But, I would caution you, they are very tart if not fully ripe. And, the fallen cherries will sprout all around on the ground, so if you don't rake them up, you will get little plant sprouts everywhere.
Yes. I have pitangas here in Southern spain (zone 9 or 9b?) and they taste kind of like grapefruit. Definitely not sweet. Most people don't really like them the first time they try them. They grow on you.
Great video, congrats! I have two Pitanga trees and they haven’t given any fruit. They must be six years old. I live in Los Angeles. How often should I water them and how often should I feed them, and do you use anything special? Please advise. Thanks.
So how do you grow them from the seed? The tile says “growing” I have a couple of the fruits, do I need to germinate them in water or just put them into the soil?
I am in SoCal so where can I get either the seeds or a little tree...? Great video! Do you grow dragon fruit too? I have figs and papayas this year...and hopefully sweet potatoes...also grew a few potatoes and artichokes this past past spring...grapes got infected 👎
Tom Jones Since most exotic fruits require fresh seeds for germination, I planted all of mine. You can get them here: wendiland.com/products/surinam-cherry I'm growing dragon fruit also, but weather's been strange this year so no fruits yet. If you want a cutting of it, I can ship it with your plant. I love homegrown artichokes, they are so sweet! You just reminded me that I have to make room to grow them again. Wish I had a fig tree...what variety of papaya to you grow? Are you able to save your grapevine? They are pretty hardy...Good luck on your sweet potatoes and other garden goodies!
Unfortunately my grapevine got some kind of fungus or something...it did have little grapes but I had to cut it back...the papayas....I just bought a nice one at the store and saved the seeds, dried them and planted...I have several little trees producing fruit...one has several dozen ..like you say...weathers going to be the main factor...too much rain or frost could be a problem...but so far going good. Figs...I had to keep my tree real small because of available growing space...and I have to cover it with netting lest the birds get the fruit first. I did see Dragon Fruit in a store here...as I recall they were $4 a pound...I may buy one anyway just for fun...I need to check out if they can grow from the seeds inside like papayas. I have such a tiny yard and limited year-round sun, so have to be careful what I plant...the Mission Figs have terrific taste, but must be fully tree ripened to get the full flavor...if someone has room they can get to be big trees and give a lot of figs...I would like to try getting some cuttings from mine and have several small trees, or bushes..(due to space limitations)....thanks for the link..I'll check it out... Happy growing...and great videos!
hey wendi really enjoyed your video I'm here in zone 10b in culver city CA, and my surinam cherry is fruiting, so I'm excited to try them but i have the red kind hopefully its good as the purple one. by the way do you by any chance grow any mangos? Ps i also got a papaya tree because of your video haven't planted it in the ground yet, waiting for winter to pass :) but its getting big.
+Sammy Tahir I was told the red variety is not as sweet as the black, but any exotic fruits grown is pretty cool to me! Enjoy it. I don't have a mango tree, but neighbors that have it, do get some fruits. So it's doable :) Happy Gardening!
All right, it's name is Pitanga. I have one of those black pitanga tree. It grows very fast, it took me only four months since I planted it from a seed and it's four feet high now. Now I'm wondering what am I suppose to do to stop it from growing higher. Do you have any idea? May I cut off the top of the tree in order to make it shorter?
saintdiego89 Hi! I have the seedling available here: wendiland.com/products/surinam-cherry You can keep it inside during winter, but I'm not sure if it's warm enough to get them to fruit in Seattle. If you do try, good luck and do keep us updated! :)
Obvious, there are a lot of varieties...some red, some darker red and closer to black; a few that are black. I have 2 varieties and love them. Thx for the video...
From Google I will freely admit these little red pumpkins are an acquired taste. Most folks are expecting some kind of cherry taste and they don’t have that. No matter how ripe, there is a resinous quality. To be blunt, you either like them or you definitely do not. More so, they must be picked when absolutely ripe or they are a very unpleasant edible experience. What is absolutely ripe? There is orange red, the color of cars, and here is blue red, the color of old-time fire trucks and blood. Surinam cherries are edible when they are a deep blood-red. Let me repeat that: A deep blood-red. An orange red one won’t harm you but you’ll wish you hadn’t eaten it. And I know you will push the envelope and try one that is not deep, blue-blood red. Don’t blame me. I warned you. You won’t die or throw up or the like but your mouth will disown you and the next time you will pick a very ripe one. T
Unfortunately a divorce separated my sons and me from our red variety that we grew in our front yard in the Oakland, CA. hills. But the strange look on their faces when they tasted their first one still lingers.
Im american.i want to plant a 1000 of these plants. Im located in suriname now. Can you give me some advice on how to grow? I can send you so much free seeds.
You're so cute, but please give more information. Instead of saying you bought the tree from "this man" let us know the name and location of the grower. Thanks!

In Brazil we call it "pitanga" :) My mom has a tree in her garden.
in Miami these trees grow wild and yes they are tasty but you got to be careful sometimes they're loaded with worms
Nice that you have compassion for the worms.
Muito legal o vídeo, aqui no Brasil essa fruta é conhecida como pitanga, um grande abraço de Brasil.
I'm from Surinam .. and try something called djamoeng .. its a purple grape .. grows only in tropical erea ..

Brilliant. Im gonna try and grow in the UK. :-) probably too cold but im as far south as you can get.
The fragrance and taste are resinous and aromatic. There is nothing to compare with the taste. It is exotic.
im growing it here in southern california zone 10 in the ground. I've had it for 3 years, it hasn't fruited yet but hope it does soon.
omar guerrero When you get your first fruit, it will be all worth it. :) Hope it fruits next spring!
update: its fruiting already, yessss! 👍
@@woopthereitis8954 how is it going now?
I make jam and pies with the red Surinam cherries. The plant is easy to grow from seed.
so timely this was reccomended to me.. mine just started to flower ❤😍😍😍
I have a Barbados Cherry, also called an Acerola. I wonder how different these two tropical cherries are?
you make me grow one of this. I am in Houston, tx. Try to find way to grow this type of plants in the ground.

im growing some from seed in zone 10 california, any fertilizer you recommend?
by 75% i mean 3 quarters by weight. 16ozs boiled down to 4 ozs. worth it.
I have planted this cherry plant in west coast of India. It is growing well

I feel like I’m watching something unreal. It tastes like turpentine. Not bothered by birds , insects. Are they telling you something?
It tastes toxic.
Ha. Ha. It's an acquired taste. It's not sweet (no matter how ripe you pick it). I think it tastes kind of like grapefruit. Other people have said it tastes like pineapple, roasted peppers or grapefruit mixed with paprika!
Is this girl from Japan ? Her english is rather well for a foreigner.
That's about the most ignorant and racist comment I've read in a bit... hard to tell if you're being a troll or not.
How is this racist ?
+jabbard gilstrap you're assuming that because her skin isn't white that she must have been born a "foreigner" thus making an ignorant and racist statement. I do believe she mentions living in San Diego, and that's part of the United States last I checked. The speaking English part doesn't help your case either. Check your assumptions before you make a bigger ass of yourself.
+jabbard gilstrap also, Japan?!?! Can you not read the poster's surname? Phan doesn't sound very Japanese at; not that surnames matter.

theyre not good ..well the red ones for sure
