    AIR BRAKE TEST
“Alright, I’d like to begin my Air Brake System Check Test” (MM)
    Gear in N, BA, IO
“ABS Light ON/OFF” (MM), CI, “Safe Start” (MM), T ON, CO
Put on seat belt (optional) CF, seatbelt latches/unlatches
Need to start with at least 100 PSI
“Working strictly with primary gage only: (MM)
“I’ve reached 100 PSI, ready to begin test.”
    First Test (L)
The TILTP First is LOW AIR WARNING
“The POTT is to make sure my low air warning LIGHT and or TONE comes on between 55-75 PSI.” (MM)
    FB to release air
KEO primary gage until light comes ON.
“TWAGT because the light on my primary gage came on at ___ PSI, therefore IAGT because it’s in the range of 55-75.” (MM)
    Second Test (O)
The next TILTP is my COMPRESSOR CUT-OUT
“The POTT is to make sure my compressor cuts out before my primary needle exceeds 140 PSI.” (MM)
    Throttle at 1,200 RPM
KEO PG until needle settles/ stops rising (don’t go by air exhaust sound)
“Alright, my compressor cut out at ___ PSI, therefore IAGT because my primary needle never exceeded 140.” (MM)
    Third Test (C)
The next TILTP is my COMPRESSOR CUT-IN
“The POTT is to make sure my compressor cuts in before my primary needle drops below 100 PSI.” (MM)
Step 1: Press brakes only once
Step 2: Wait for needle to settle
    Step 3: Announce reading
“Alright, needle settled at ___ PSI” (MM), “I’m going to throttle for 10 seconds” (MM)
    Count to 10 out loud.
KEO PG until needle begins to rise
“Alright, TWAGT because I have cut in at ___ PSI, therefore IAGT because it never dropped below 100.” (MM)
    Forth Test (A)
The next TILTP is my APPLIED BRAKE LEAKAGE TEST
“The POTT is to make sure I do not lose no more than 4 PSI in 60 seconds.” (MM)
CI, LG, T OFF, CO, IO, “ABS Light ON/OFF” (MM)
    Release PB, TB
    Let needle settle
Apply SB and hold it firmly
    Let needle settle and AR
“Alright, I’m at ___ PSI, can you please time me for 60 seconds.” (MM)
KEO PM and make sure you’re not losing any pressure.
When time is up, look at PM again and see how many PSI you lost.
“Alright, I’m still at ___ PSI, therefore IAGT because I did not lose no more than 4 PSI in 60 seconds” (MM)
“Would you care to check the gage? Or can I release my foot off the brake?” (MM)
Always ask permission to release your foot off the brake.
    Fifth Test (S)
The next TILTP is my SPRING VALVE POP OUT TEST
“The POTT is to make sure my tractor protection valve and my trailer protection valve pops out between 20-45 PSI.” (MM)
FB and KEO PB/TB valves, not the gage. DO NOT touch the valves because examiner might think you’re assisting.
Make sure both valves pop out.
“Alright, both valves popped out, and it is at about ___ PSI, therefore IAGT because it’s in the range of 20-45 PSI.” (MM)
    Pre 3-Way Break Check
The next TILTP is my 3-Way Brake Check
“Before we do that, we need to be at least 100 PSI to perform this test” (MM)
“With your permission I’d like to do again another safe start.

“WYP I’m going to finish my 3-way brake check.” (MM)
    3-WAY BREAK CHECK
CLUTCH IN, LOW GEAR for PB & TB check
    1. Trailer Brake (PB) Check
“I’m going to check my TRAILER BRAKE by release my PB.” (MM)

CO slowly to feel the Tug Test, Tractor should not move forward.
    CI
“Alright, IAGT because my parking brakes held” (MM)
    Re-apply TB
    3. Service Brake (SB) Check
“The last test is my service brake, would you like me to perform it or just explain it?” (MM)
    EXAMINER ANSWER: “Just explain it.”
Gear in N, CO, BA, T-ON
Explain as if you were going to perform it:
“I would engage my transmission into low gear.
Release my parking brake and my trailer brake.
Place my left hand on 9 o-clock position, right hand at 3 o-clock open palm.
I would then roll up at 5 mph 15-20 feet and apply my service brake firmly.
If my tractor and trailer stops straight, it is a good test.
If my steering wheel tugs either left or right, it’s an indication I either have:
    1. Low air
    2. Flat tire, or my
    3. Brakes are in need of adjustment
“That will conclude my air brake test and my in-cab inspection.”

Depending on the state it depends on what you check. Oregon has the easiest test whereas Washington and California have among the hardest tests. I believe North Carolina is the hardest. By hard I just mean the amount of stuff you have to say. A lot of states allow the school to test you whereas in Washington state, the DMV has testers that you must go through. My schooling was in Idaho but I took the Washington test there in Idaho since I live here in Washington. We were less than a quarter mile from the state line lol.
