CDL Test, Class A 2024 "Incab and Engine start Including Air Brakes"

  • This is the most important test because you can FAIL the entire inspection if you do not conduct the three required air brake test 100% correctly, 1=Applied, 2=Low air warning, 3=brake valve set, You'll need at least a 73% to pass on all the other items. That is for every item on all 6 inspections. Realizing 73% is very lenient on all other areas. Of course you want to do a good job and strive for 100% for everything. 100% once again is required for the 3 Air Brake tests. They're not hard to do, remember the items in the numbering system so you can go through the numbers one step at a time 4,3,2

      First Aid kit is not on the test. It's also not required by the DOT, You can ad it in there if you want but the 4 safety items I refer to is correct. There is not a particular sequence for Inspection items as far as the examiner is concerned. I teach a sequence because it makes it easier to learn and protects you from forgetting things. You can always go back to anything you forget, as you would in a real world scenario.

    Hi, I have watched all your videos, and feel a lot more comfortable about the test format- especially the pre-trip inspection! It makes a lot more sense watching your video that reading it in the book. The only other brake systems that are discussed in section 11 in the CDL drivers manual would be hydraulic. Test the system the same way. Pump the brakes three times and hold them for five seconds and make sure the pedal doesn’t leak down. Also do the service brake test as it describes. Any safety portion of the brake system will also have to be tested. Thank you!

    Nice tutorial.... do you have any idea what the rule is, about taking a truck and trailer air brake test with a trailer that had electric brakes but the cab is air. For instance, a dump truck with a backhoe trailer? Thanks, btw I live in Pennsylvania

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  5 лет назад +1

      You can refer to the CDL drivers manual from PA and in section 10 it goes over the vehicle inspection. You cannot be tested on anything that is not mentioned in the manual. There's no mention of Electric brakes so no testing required for electric brakes while you're taking the CDL test. You can however test them to ensure they work by rolling the truck slowly and gently activating just the trailer brake. Or you can engage them and do a tug test but the air truck brakes need to be released. Sorry for the delay in answering

      Try to find a school that is not tied in with a trucking company. It may seem like a good way to save money but it will cost a lot of money if you quit driving for them. Try a independent trucking school that can help you get state funding or some sort of scholarship, or tuition assistance. It’s best because you’re not going to be obligated to a company you’re not happy with. Best of luck to you and thank you for the comment.

    Thanks for your video. I’m taking the test next week and have few questions if you can help please.
    1. In Colorado, testing in an automatic do I chalk the wheels before even starting the truck?
    2. When i get in the truck, turn key ON, before starting it, do I mention my abs light?
    3. Does my truck have to be in nuetral as I do a safe start to build up the psi?
    4. When I push the Valves in to do air test, is the truck in nuetral?
    5. Do I have to mention my seat belt, extinguisher, rest of cabin check and gauges before even trying anything?
    6 is there also a test where after you push your valves in, without foot on the brake, you make sure you didn’t lose 3 psi in one minute?
    7 for the light indicator check, do I have to ask the examiner to stand outside?
    Thank you

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  4 года назад

      Very good questions!
      1. Yes, chalk the wheels. In a truck with a standard transmission you’re allowed to put the truck in gear to hold it in place. You can’t do that with an automatic. 2. You mention the ABS light when you turn the key on to start the engine right before you’re about to check the instrument panels in the operation portion of the gauges. The ABS light should come on momentarily and then turn off. That indicates that the ABS bulb works properly. 3. Yes the truck needs to be in neutral. 4. Yes, the truck needs to be in neutral for an automatic transmission unless you are doing the service brake test and tug test. 5. It’s easy to start with the seatbelt and other safety related items as soon as you sit in the seat. 6. Yes, that test and an additional test to check the rate that the Air Compressor builds air explained in the manual but not required to do during the examination. I do recommend that you know how to do those test and do them in the real world scenario. 7. For the lights, the examiner will tell you that he will assist you in checking the lights when he gives you the overview. He will also tell you that you start at the front of the vehicle and will do a complete light inspection, that means every light. You are responsible for naming the lights correctly and telling the examiner where to go to look at the lights that you want to check. If you need more information or clarification you’re allowed to ask the examiner. You can email me and I’ll provide my phone number so we can talk. mikelogan99@gmail.com Thank you!

      All of the course layouts will be the same, The pup will react quicker so you have to be ready to correct the off-track if it occurs. I would say even though I've never backed a pup that the turning points will be the same as the trailer I'm using in the video. It is 48'. Example Position the trailer axle the same way I did in the parallel park and then the drive axles and the steer axle. It should give you the same results. I would suggest a practice session though before you test to confirm this.

    I really appreciate if someone can answer my question. For an automatic transmission, I would need wheel chocks. But let's say I don't have them at my disposal from my employer. For the static air leakage test. I need to have truck in neutral and spring brake knob in with truck off. Ignition on. But won't it roll away. Hence why I need wheel chocks. But, how about if I put truck, push the parking brake in. Then select Drive, then turn truck off. Is that valid, or turning an automatic off on Drive gear can mess up the transmission? I'm trying to see how to run a air brakes test on an automatic Allison transmission for Peterbilt 320. I will very thankful if someone can answer my question.

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  5 лет назад

      You didn't mention if it's an auto shift. That type has a clutch. Its not a good idea to shut the engine off while in drive. The transmission may become torque locked and damage may occur. Look at the indicator and see if it goes to "AN" Automatic Neutral, That means when you shift into Drive set the brake and shut the engine off then turn the key on the transmission will go to neutral automatically. The truck will roll. I suggest getting something to chock the wheels. If the truck is parked somewhat level it won't take much to keep it from rolling. When your checking for leak both valves have to be pushed in.
      So for anyone reading this and you're taking the CDL test you have to do the Brake test exactly the way it's described in the CDL drivers manual. It states that in the manual that it's an automatic fail for the entire vehicle inspection if the brake test is not done correctly. That's means 100% correct. Thanks for the comment!

    • @andrewterra4938
      @andrewterra4938 5 лет назад +1

      @@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest Thank you. What I mean't to say was an Allison push select transmission. I don't have a truck. I'm just trying to ask a question so I can have a reference. I'm 16, but, I'm learning everything vehicles which is something uncommon a 16 year old would be learning. Anyways, back on topic. For an auto transmission that is push gear. I have a friend who is a garbage collector. And their company, believe it or not, doesn't have wheel chocks. So in these type of transmissions, it would damage it if the truck was set to Drive gear after this turning the truck off. Then push the spring brake knob in. Would that damage the vehicle? Because, the main question is what if there isn't chocks. Bcuz the step I'm applying to is the air static leakage test when ofc you know having the truck in Neutral, engine off, and spring brake pressed in. But, then the truck would roll, hence why a company/driver needs chocks. But, my friend's company looks unreliable as they are a private hauler. So, minus all I have typed. My main question is. Without wheels chocks and so vehicle doesn't roll, can putting truck into Drive gear then shutting off, thus after pushing in the parking brake damage transmission? I assume not though because after spring brake pop out test, it would put truck back into neutral as it is auto shift and not drive, which means it would have no occurring damage when turning truck on for service brake test. I hope I am clear and you take your time to respond. I want to learn and ask as I want know, but, thanks for your time! I hope I don't sound a bit of a pity!! Lol

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  5 лет назад

      Andrew Terra , there are two types of automatics that I’m aware of. One has a clutch pedal that is called auto shift, you apply the clutch to start and stop the vehicle but all the shifting up and down is done automatically. The other type is an automatic, a full automatic. What I explained earlier is that the automatics may automatically shift back to neutral and the AN will be displayed on the read out. The truck is back in neutral so it won’t hold. If your friend wants to try it on an incline and it holds then that may be the solution to the problem. I wouldn’t recommend it. You may want to talk to a shop and ask someone there who is more knowledgeable about automatic transmissions. If they say it won’t hurt it, then that may be an indication that it’s OK to do it that way. I personally wouldn’t do it that way. Thanks again!

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest

      You must identify that the truck has a problem and let the examiner know it. Then get out of the truck and try to find the problem. That's what you would do in a real world scenario. More than likely the Glad hand is leaking and go out reattach it properly, the rubber donuts must be aligned before you lock down the glad hand. If the air is bleeding off somewhere try to find it. The vehicle is not safe to drive if the air loss is greater than the 4 psi. You may have to cancel the test if that is the case.

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  4 года назад +1

      I forgot to say that if this occurs you can fix the issue and then start the test over again. You do get another chance just as if this is a real world situation and you're running through your pretrip inspection. You would fix the problem and then get back in the truck and go.
      You won't fail if you follow these steps.

    Forgot to chock your wheels! Isn't that an automatic fail?

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  6 лет назад +4

      No, In my testers manual it says this is a safety concern and if the vehicle is sitting on an incline then you must chock the wheels. No points against you if you don't You're also allowed to put the transmission in gear to hold the vehicle in place. I taught that as one of the 4 things to do to set the vehicle up prior to doing the three required brake tests. The 4 things to set the vehicle up are as follows, 1. check the air guages for 120 psi, 2, release both brakes, 3, place the transmission in gear and 4, Turn key off and after engine shuts off turn key back on. Those three tests are the only tests that are automatic fails for the entire inspection if you don't do them 100% correctly.

      I agree, but for those who have never done this I felt like I had to describe this inspection with all the details not taking anything for granted. I failed a lot of people because they made mistakes when it came to the doing the air brake test. Thanks for the comment.

      I feel ya man, It is difficult to remember the steps. I want to help you, Call me, text or email if you have questions, 479-790-3671 mikelogan99@gmail.com In the Videos I made reference to a number system, Try it but don't go to the next step until you have each step memorized 100%
      Lets start....4-3-2 Four items have to be in place before you start. You have to set the truck up. If you look at the cab of truck and invision a circle and moving to the right...clockwise, 12:00 o'clock are the #1air guages...you need a full charge of air, 120psi, NEXT move to the #2 brake valves, release/push in both valves, now since the brakes are released the truck may roll. #3 push clutch in and also foot on brake...Next put the transmission in gear. this prevents truck from rolling. #4 LAST Key off then key back on after engine shuts off. Now the truck is set up to test the air brakes,
      Three tests required, this is the three of the 4-3-2 that I mentioned, Applied, Low Air, Valve set
      Instructions Applied= hold foot on brake for 1 minute, you should have less than 4 psi air loss. Done
      Instructions Low Air=pump brake until the light and buzzer stay on continuous and warn you at 60 psi and above
      Instructions Valve set= both Valves should set at around 40 psi but may fall to as low as 20 psi, do not assist the valves, they have to set all on there own. These three test have to done 100% correct or the whole vehicle inspection is an "Automatic fail"
      The last of the 4-3-2 is the two, Two test remain that are not part of the auto fail. Parking brake test and Service brake test, Section 11 of the CDL Drivers License Manual explaines how to do these, YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO DO THE THREE REQUIRED TESTS,
      Please take this serious, The Air Brakes are the most important Inspection out of all of them, that's why you have to get a 100% correct score
      Good Lucl!

    Lol must pass all brake tests or you fail now

      No not all of them, Just the #1applied, #2 Low air warning and the #3 Brake valve set. It's been this way for quite some time. Yes you fail the entire vehicle Inspection portion if you don't get 100% and you cannot proceed beyond the Inspection.

      Um try to stay current I literally just took the test and they just changed it a couple months ago

      I am current, I'm not sure where you took the test at but in Colorado this is the rule. The three tests I mentioned earlier have to be done 100% accurately. I agree with the rule because if anyone who want's to operate a vehicle with Air Brakes doesn't know how to test the system and has not properly prepared, then they're not ready for a CDL. You don't have to believe me, you can call CDL compliance In Lakewood Co. and ask them. This is the office that coordinates all third party CDL testing for Colorado 303-205-5600
      Thanks for the comment!

      Also read the CDL Drivers manual section 11 page two under Air Brake test. The first sentence states this that "Failure to perform an Air Brake Test will result in an automatic failure of the vehicle inspection test".
