My Top Ten Modern Tres Albums | Tres Cubano | Cuban Tres | Tresero | Desert Island Discs

People ask me all the time what my favorite Tres records are, so I thought I’d make a quick video of my personal favs.
I think we all know the classic recordings so I wanted to highlight more recent ones with modern players. Every one of these recordings I have been obsessed with for months on end at one time or another.
I should note that on this list I purposefully limited myself to just two Pancho Amat albums, otherwise this list would just be nothing but Pancho’s stuff.
Some might be surprised at my choices.

01. Pancho Amat ‘Herencias’ 2014
Tresero: Pancho Amat
Song used: ‘El Carreton De Quiqui’
Simply the greatest Tres recording of all time. Without question Pancho’s masterpiece.

Before ‘Herencias’ was released this was my favourite of Pancho’s recordings.

03. Septeto Trio Los Dos ‘Así Es La Vida’ 2013
Tresero: Pepito Domingo
Song used: ‘Se Me Fue’
Pepito Domingo is my favourite ‘Traditional’ style Tres player. His lines are always lyrical and this group has the greatest vibe.

04. Soneros Del Valle ‘Fantasías’ 2008
Tresero: Edel Nieves
Song used: ‘Salsa Bonita’
I can’t say enough about this record. It's an absolutely stunning recording with some tasty Tres playing by Nieves and a trumpeter with the sweetest tone I have ever heard.

05. Cuba Ilé Trio ‘La Casa de la Música Cubana’ 2019
Tresero: Pablo Reyes
Song used: ‘Amarrao Compe’
An absolute gem of a record by the Chilean based Cuba Ilé Trio. I love the simplicity of this one, it’s just the way they sound live. Pablo’s Tres playing is clean and lyrical.

06. Klave y Kongo ‘Son así y Guaguancó’ 1999
Tresero: Jay Danley
Song Used: ‘La Vida Empieza a Correr’
The record that made me first take notice of the Tres. The amazing Jay Danley was, and still is my main inspiration.

07. Yuniel Jimenez ‘Un Guajiro en Nueva York’ 2012
Tresero: Yuniel Jimenez
Song used: ‘Lo Que Se Aparenta’
The first record by the New York based Tresero Yuniel Jimenez. An incredible, very diverse recording by one of the best Treseros in the world.

08. Más Que Son ‘Un Poco Más’ 2012
Tresero: Yoriell Carmona
Song Used: ‘Un Poco Más’
Yoriell Carmona is one of my favorite overall players. His lines are ultra clean and his solos may be brief, however they never disappoint.

09. Eduardo Sosa & Pepe Ordás
‘Convergencia’ 2017
Tresero: Eduardo Sosa
Song used: ‘Santa Maria De Las Canciones’
I listened to this one non-stop during my last trip to the Caribbean back in March. I love Eduardo’s open, woody tone. The stripped down format and the interplay between Sosa and Ordás makes this a must have recording for any Tresero.

10. Maykel Elizarde ‘South County: Music of Cuba’ 2017
Tresero: Maykel Elizarde
Song used: ‘Cecilia’
Maykel is one of the most dynamic players in the world. Without question this is the most eclectic album on the list.
