The original Buena Vista Social Club album was recorded for World Circuit Records over six days at the vintage EGREM studios in Havana. Released in 1997, the album went on to become a worldwide phenomenon, selling over 8 million copies and contributing to the rise in popularity of Cuban, as well as Latin American, music.
Since forming in London in the mid-1980s, World Circuit Records has made its reputation by producing some of the finest albums of the past three decades. The label’s prestigious roster includes Buena Vista Social Club and associated solo artists (including Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Omara Portuondo and Orlando ‘Cachaíto’ López), Malian blues pioneer Ali Farka Touré, Malian divas and social activists Oumou Sangaré and Fatoumata Diawara, master kora player Toumani Diabaté, the illustrious Orchestra Baobab, musical iconoclast Cheikh Lô, and Fela Kuti’s legendary drummer and co-creator of Afrobeat Tony Allen.

This album soundtracked my recovery from illness 5 years ago ; stood in the kitchen making breakfast on a Saturday morning, beaming from ear to ear, our youngest daughter running around my feet and getting in my way...the pure joy and life in these sounds made them a perfect fit to where I was at the time.
I haven't listened to this for a while, but today, it again soundtracked my Saturday morning whilst I made breakfast, and took me back to 5 years ago, giving me a friendly reminder that I can't ever forget how I should keep smiling, keep the rhythm, keep the joy alive, always.

First time I heard to this song was in in Sweden when I was little and did not understand the song because they sing on Spanish. I moved to Spain for eleven years ago and learned Spanish. I have always loved this album but I even love it more now that I can speak fluent Spanish. Aiiii candela candela🎉💃

This album is the greatest ever. I do not even understand meaning of lyrics, but loving the idea behind the album and the spirit i can feel among the whole orchestra group. It is a big motive for me to learn Spanish to be more involved.

Qué ritmo y candela! Se aprecia la herencia africana tan presente en la música cubana como en los sones veracruzanos de mi país. Todos somos hijos del mismo dios, de la misma tierra.
Porque no existe tal cosa como un género de "son de Veracruz" sino la exportación del son, ritmo cubano, a diferentes lugares del mundo, donde fue acogido y algunas veces hasta expropiado. Igual que el danzón y la guayabera en su caso.
Y no,no es algo tan romántico como que "todos somos lo mismo, o todos somos hermanos, o todos provenimos de lo mismo" claramente no, porque esto es 100% cubano, claro que afeucubano en gran parte pero cubano, no africano, ni español, ni francés, ni chino que fueron todas las etnias importantes para la conformación de Cuba, fue y se dio solamente bajo la circunstancias y el sincretismo cubano, así como el resto de los 60 ritmos y complejos rítmicos cubanos que son la base de todo lo que comercialmente se le pone la etiqueta de latino.

Brasil y Cuba tienen mucho más en común que Cuba con el resto de Hispanoamérica, incluso con respecto al Caribe, es increíble pero cierto, desde el complejo sincretismo religioso, el musical y en general cultural que es muy rico. Por ello somos junto a EEUU las tres grandes potencias musicales de América.

When ever this song reaches @3:28 i close my eyes. I emerge to a tropical evening with cool sea breeze. My girl and I start to tango passionately in a crowd of dancing couples. When those 2 minutes pass, we wish the sing would n't end. But it does.
